Day 15 Saigon to Phnom Penn

      November 14, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Early start through amazing traffic ( there are 8m scooters in Saigon and most were on the road this morning) and we headed north to the Cu Chi tunnels . These were the tunnels used in the guerrilla warfare . As I did not manage to go to the living tunnels near Hue I went into these . So many of the group were barred by age or various issues with backs or size etc , a couple of us thought we should take one for the team and go in . It was incredibly narrow and I had to walk in a squat position / luckily it was only about 10metres . The whole visit was very informative- we saw the traps they set for the American soldiers which were barbaric and designed to badly injure rather than kill . Had lunch overlooking the Saigon river . Then on to border where we sat in no man’s land for an hour in the heat
after handing in our passports. There seemed to be a lot of “ transactions” taking place between our guide and various officials and then we were back on a new coach with our passports duly stamped .
First impressions of Cambodia is it is so noticeably poorer and full of litter but Phnom Penn seems ok .

Ho Chi Minh City day 2

      November 11, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Today we got up nice and early thanks to the jet lag and got our free hotel breakfast (picture 1) before setting out to the cu chi tunnels. We got a guided tour around what a village would’ve looked like during/before the Vietnam war, and then through some of the tunnels. There’s like 250km of underground tunnel systems in this area several meters underground fully equipped for living in with underground water wells, kitchens, living spaces, command centre as well as booby traps. People lived underground for years during the war and it’s how they kept the Americans out of this area!

There was also a beautiful temple there to honour the fallen soldiers

After we got back we set out to go to a restaurant that Jane had chosen but turns out that place is gone so we went to the street food market and had: hu tieu bo kho (amazing beef noodle soup with carrot), salad rolls, bbq squid and this crispy pancake thing. Food was amazing and for dessert we tried a coconut avocado ice cream + a regular coconut ice cream. They put the ice cream in coconut shells and gave us the coconut water in a bottle on the side!

Another early night as we are still jet lagged and have an early flight in the morning.

      Cu Chi Tunnels

      August 9, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Today we decided to visit the famous tunnels of Vietnam in Cu Chi area. As we found out there are two locations: the location most tourist busses and booked tours go to and a second place not that crowded and reachable via public bus.
We chose the second one by taking the bus Nr 13 from District 1 Bus Terminal to Cu Chi. Unfortunately the traffic was quite bad so it took us about 1:45 to Cu Chi. There you switch to Bus 79 to Ben Duoc. Better tell the driver to kick you out in Ben Duoc, near the tunnel!

From there it is only a few meters to the area including the tunnels, the Tempel, a paintball are and a shooting Range. I did not quite get the last two.

We payed 90.000 entry per person and the guide was included. The tour starts with a movie, a showboard and an explanation of what and how and ends with the highlight: the tunnels. You will have the opportunity to walk trough some including entering through one original hole which is insanely small.

The way back was the same in reverse order. There is a nice lady selling fruits and water directly at the street in front of the tunnel area. She told us how long we will approximately wait until the bus arrives and also offered some benches to wait on.
