Mekong Delta 🛶

Today we did a tour trip to the Mekong Delta. We were picked up and then shuttled around, depositing tourists and picking them up until we ended up with 12 tourists and a guide. Our guide Tommy was very quirky, he would often say something that we couldn’t tell if it was a joke, or pause dramatically at odd points. We drove to a harbor and got on an old wooden motor boat. It took us across to an island, where we observed some coconut candy making. We then took tuk tuks to this area that seemed part farm, part random tourist interest points. We took a canoe ride with someone rowing, kinda like punting, which was very peaceful. Henry got to try making local pancakes. Our lunch centerpiece was an upright fish (kinda hard to eat) with other dishes as sides.
We boated to a different island where they showed us bee products that are made. We ate some fresh fruit and listened to traditional music and singing. At one point they sang “if you’re happy and you know it”. That kinda epitomized the tour— it was fun but random, as if people who weren’t super in touch with tourists had strung together random activities in their best attempt. Which is probably what happened. I’m attempting to be friendly on group tours and we chatted to a British couple throughout the day which was enjoyable.
Finally we stopped at another temple with a very large Buddha statue. I didn’t know that there’s two types of Buddhism, depending on influence from India vs influence from China. Then it was back to the city. We tried a dinner place that was closed so we went into a random pho shop. We were the only foreigners which was a valuable experience because our time in SEA has had tourists at every turn so far (also not a bad thing).
Bonus: watch the last video for a taste of the karaoke we experience every night. People hang out on the streets with giant speaker systems and microphones and sing. It’s comical how loud and usually off key it is, but I admire their gusto.Read more

Traveler I’d get violent if our neighbors kept singing at the levels they do here…
