      Day 80: Sunset - Leaving Viet Nam

      We had four days in Viet Nam, each day had its own special set of events. Later I will be posting a bunch of different posts from our Viet Nam experiences.

      Right now the Viking Neptune is sailing south towards our next stop in Thailand. As a group of us played cards “Five Crowns” - Happy to announce I finally won! It’s my first time winning.

      More importantly, we watched the sunset in the west. I made a short time-lapse video (18 seconds) it’s kinda cool to watch. It did give a peaceful moment of reflection to think about our time in Viet Nam as the sunset over Viet Nam.

      I am sure for many of us who visited our feelings are all mixed emotions. Some of you served here many years ago. Others like me were fortunate to have the draft eliminated when it came our time to get called.

      During today’s excursion we did stop at the Palace where the two tanks crashed through the gates as a gesture of power - an “In your face” statement. The tanks are still there off to the right hand side of the palace.

      We also saw the CIA building which is famous for the photos of the helicopter taking the last Americans out of Viet Nam. Remember not everyone got to come home - I wore a MIA bracelet for some time. It’s sad I forget the name on the bracelet. Seeing these places made it more real for me.

      I have friends back home in Connecticut which served. One of my college roommates, Rex, served.

      Most of us can agree - war just doesn’t make sense. It seems like every country we have visited has their own war stories.

      Le président Diêm & le bonze Thích Quáng

      Hòa thượng Thích Quảng Đức, né Lâm Văn Tức en 1897 et mort le 11 juin 1963, est un bonze vietnamien, bouddhiste mahāyāna, célèbre pour s'être immolé par le feu le 11 juin 1963 à Saïgon, en signe de protestation contre la répression anti-bouddhiste ordonnée par le président catholique Ngô Đình Diệm.

      Le cliché de la scène de l'auto-immolation, largement diffusé dans la presse internationale, fait dire au président John Fitzgerald Kennedy : « Aucune photo de presse n'a suscité autant d'émotion dans le monde que celle-ci ».

      Elle vaut à son auteur, Malcolm Browne, le prix World Press Photo of the Year en 1963, et le prix Pulitzer en 1964, catégorie International Reporting, qui lui est conjointement décerné avec David Halberstam, autre journaliste américain à avoir couvert l'évènement.

      Cette photo provoque un impact psychologique considérable sur l'opinion internationale, et met la pression sur le pouvoir vietnamien. Dans un premier temps, Diệm, promet des réformes, espérant calmer les bouddhistes. Mais les promesses ne sont pas tenues et la situation se détériore davantage. Et alors que les manifestations se poursuivent, les Forces spéciales de l'armée de la République du Viêt Nam, fidèles à Ngô Đình Nhu, le frère de Diem, mènent une répression féroce à l'échelle nationale. Elles détruisent de nombreuses pagodes et s'emparent du cœur de Thich Quảng Đức. D'autres moines, nonnes et laïcs vietnamiens s'immoleront ensuite. Les pertes humaines et matérielles sont considérables.

      Finalement, ces excès conduisent les États-Unis à soutenir activement le coup d'État pour renverser Diệm, qui est assassiné le 2 novembre 1963.      Read more

      Reunification Palace by Matt

      When the Americans evacuated in 1975, the South Vietnamese president hastily departed the palace and the VC soldiers smashed through the gates in their tanks, still present in the garden, and symbolically unfurled their flag on the balcony.

      Nowadays, the grand reception rooms are used to greet foreign dignitaries and host banquets. Upstairs are the living quarters, which retain their 60s vibe, and the animal skulls on the walls include their tails to symbolise long life, something the owners presumably didn't have.

      A bomb shelter lies in the basement, with gray walls and gray rooms containing old gray transmitters and typewriters, which were all very military and, well, gray.      Read more

      Erkundung von Saigon

      Heute wollten wir uns die Sehenswürdigkeiten von Saigon anschauen und wir begannen mit dem Wiedervereinigungspalast von außen. In der Nähe befinden sich sogleich die Kathedrale Notre Dame (gerade Sanierungsmaßnahmen) und das Postamt. Danach spazierten wir Richtung Norden und wir schauten uns die Tan Thin Church of Sacred Heart an. Die Kirche ist komplett in rosa-leider kamen wir genau in dem Zeitfenster, wo die Kirche geschlossen hatte. Vorbei an bunten schmalen Häusern (in ganz Saigon) und einem lokalen Markt ging es zur kleinen Jade Emperor Pagode. Danach liefen wir wieder Richtung "Zentrum" und wir sahen die Oper, das Rathaus mit der Ho-Chi-Minh-Statue im Vordergrund, den Ben Thanh Markt (sehr touristisch und überteuert) und einen Hindentempel.
      Nach einem kleinen Abstecher ins "Backbacker-Viertel" mit vielen Bars und Restaurants, gingen wir in ein vegetarisches Restaurant und anschließend in die Glow Rooftop Bar und die Drinking & Healing Bar. Ab dem Abendessen waren wir dann zu viert, da Freunde von Suki aus Hanoi auch in der Stadt sind.      Read more

      Dov’è il bunker?

      Iniziata la giornata con un’altra super colazione ci dirigiamo verso l’ultima tappa in ho chi min city, il palazzo in cui soggiornava il presidente del Vietnam meridionale, oggi chiamato palazzo della riunificazione.
      Il palazzo in stile sovietico, internamente risulta ancora arredato come all’epoca ed è piacevole da visitare. Nell’ interrato, dopo vari tentativi, riusciamo a trovare il bunker usato a difesa del presidente nel bombardamento del 1975.
      La visita è arricchita anche dal bel giardino alberato, con gli ormai soliti carri armati in esposizione, dove passiamo qualche minuto ad osservare i bimbi vietnamiti al parco in una loro classico domenica mattina.      Read more

      Stadtbesichtigung Saigon

      Am letzten Tag in Saigon besuchten wir zuerst den gut erhaltenen Wiedervereinigungspalast. Früher südvietnamesischer Präsidentenpalast, nach der Vereinigung wurde er umbenannt, da hier die Kapitulations- und Vereinigungspapiere unterzeichnet wurden. Im Bunker finden sich noch viele gut erhaltene Gerätschaften und Dokumente.
      Anschliessend fuhren wir zur Notre Dame (welche renoviert und deshalb nicht besichtigt werden kann) gleich neben dem schönen Hauptpostamt.
      Vorbei an der Oper und zum sehr schönen Rathaus im Kolonialstil.
      Nach dem stündigen Besuch in einem Markt, in dem es wirklich alles zu kaufen gibt, fuhren wir zurück in unser Hotel und packten unsere Sachen für die Weiterfahrt zum 5 Stunden entfernten Badestrand. Von den 4 Gruppenteilnehmenden und dem super Reiseleiter Pedro Lipp verabschiedeten wir uns. Es war eine wirklich schöne Rundreise. Freuen uns jetzt aber für die 5 Tage am Strand…      Read more

      Prvni zastavkou bylo War Remnants Museum, muzeum zachycujici udalosti - predevsim vietnamsko-americke (ale taky vietnamsko-francouzske) valky. Je hlavne o fotkach, vetsina z nich moc hezka neni. Hlavne pak ne snimky postizenych lidi - deti klidne i v treti generaci se rodi mentalne i fyzicky degenerovane vinou agenta orange, chemikalie s vysokym obsahem dioxinu, kterou tu Americani zabijeli dzungli, aby v ni lepe videli ukryvajici se nepratele.
      V Palaci nezavislosti se dnes uz nic nedeje. Jsou tu 3 ruzne velke reprezentacni mistnosti, ve kterych se psaly dejiny. Abdikovalo tu nekolik vlad a v roce 1975 tu mistni branu prorazil tank armady Vietkongu ze severu a sesadil loutkovy jihovietnamsky rezim. To byl konec vietnamske valky.
      Katedrala Notre Dame byla stejne jako vcera zavrena. Chudaci krestani. To buddhisti jsou na tom lip. V jedne z pagod, kam jsem se podivala, jich k obeti prisly snad desitky.
      Posledni zastavkou me saigonske exkurze bylo muzeum Ho Chi Minhova mesta. Nadherna budova z druhe poloviny 19. stoleti byla stavena uz za ucelem muzejnim, ovsem prvni expozice se do ni nastehovala az po roce 1975. Do te doby se tu stridali politicti papalasi. Sbirky jsou vsehochut - od historie (opet spousta valecnych fotek), pres remesla, po vycisleni uspechu Saigonu ve vsemoznych disciplinach. Zaprasene a docela nuda :-(.      Read more
