      Saigon - Bienvenue au Vietnam🇻🇳

      March 20, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

      Another Day in Nha Trang

      September 18, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌩️ 33 °C

      June 8, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Ho Chi Minh is just a big developed city with not much essence or difference from any other city in the world. Wide streets, large buildings, busy people (but on their vietnamese calm vibe). You can clearly see how the economical status is higher in this city compared to the rest of the country, everything is more modern, people speak some english, there are homeless people everywhere on the streets (somehow you can always see that the richer the city is, bigger is the amount of poverty you see on the streets). Didn't stay for too long in this big city, it was more of a practical stop for some "first world tasks" such as my expensive whole day english test (by some examiners with an awful english, given the irony), finding my way out of the country (cheapest possible way) or doing some shopping. On my exam break escaped to the sad remnants war museum to remind myself how awful humans can be. Got impressed by the intensity of the party street (strippers dancing on the front door, incredibly loud music that no one is dancing to, 7 year old's breathing out fire in the middle of the night...), had some beers with a greek guy I met a few towns ago and got greeted by a really sweet bartender who gave me the chance to say goodbye to the country surrounded by vietnamese generosity and warm heart. Last but not least, as proud as I am of myself, managed to leave the country with only 3 dongs, which is about less than 10 cents (best country I have done so far). Had my last pho (noodle soup) for breakfast and got ready to leave this country of friendly and relaxed people, large interesting food diversity and very cheap beer. Let's see what Cambodia has to share!

📍Essentials: War remnants museum, check out the party street
💡 Travelling tips: Giant Ibis was the cheapest reliable company I could find. After Covid prices increased enormously from ~10 to ~40$. This was 35$ The bus is pretty comfy, the lady who attended me incredibly sweet (at least I think so, but we couldn't exchange a single word on the same language), the guy on the bus spoke a bit of english and managed all the details (easiest immigration borders I've ever done). The only thing was that I decided to do visa on arrival because I wasn't sure where, when and how I was crossing the border, and instead of paying 36$ t-visa I payed 45$ to the bus guy. So if you can plan at least three days in advance (more than I do as you can clearly see) you can save a few bucks on it.
💡Travelling tips: food is slightly more expensive in here compared with the rest of the country, at least for what district 1 stands for. So make sure to ask for the price of food in advance if you don't want to find yourself paying four times more what you were hoping for.

      Kriegsreste-Museum

      March 22, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 35 °C

Read more

      Kriegs-Geschichte 1

      March 1, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

      Cass’s Birthday!

      January 13 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Today was a big day! The big 3-0 !

Last night we had an acrobatics show booked and we were lucky enough to get seats in the 4th row. It was a cute show which was very well choreographed about the history and growth of Vietnam into what it is today.

On top of the show last night and to further celebrate the big occasion, Cass wanted to make the most of being in Vietnam and eat all day, and eat we did. After a wake up call of Mike poorly singing happy birthday we started our food tour with a roadside phố and bún (8/10). A lady with a bike cart happened to ride by with some fried banana so we stopped her for some breakfast dessert and after a quick laugh with the lady about her ripping us off (we paid her anyway as it was a few cents only) we ate our coconut sauce - topped fried banana (7/10) on our way to our target for the morning - an egg coffee. These are absolutely delicious (11/10) and will become a regular fixture in our days in Vietnam. After wandering around for a few hours looking for a tour to the Cu Chị tunnels we found ourselves ready for lunch - where we discovered crispy phố and pork bún chả! The phố was not soupy as we expected, but more saucy with fried noodles (9/10). The bún chả was deconstructed, but each mouthful was delicious and so full of flavour (10/10). We couldn’t eat much more before a quick mid day nap so that’s exactly what we did.

Dinner was a degustation of street food. First up was pork sticky rice and a custard bảo (both 10/10) from a place we visited on our walking tour 2 days prior), then spring rolls (7/10), xíu mại (8/10) and then bột chiên (fried tapioca cake) (6/10). Lastly, we had dessert which were in essence profiteroles, but were beautifully decorated and filled with a variety of flavours - we got a passion fruit, almond and chocolate, and 2x chocolate topped and chocolate filled (10/10). I count 8x food and drink stops - we couldn’t possibly have eaten more today!

Ho Chi Minh City Tag 2

      January 26 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

      The Vietnam War Remnant Museum

      February 27 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

This is a tough blog post to write. I felt that given the history of Vietnam and the war that Australia participated in, that it was important that Michael and I see the Vietnam War from the perspective of the Vietnamese people.

I didn't take many photos as much of it was very difficult to observe and learn. Photography is such an important element of life and history to capture these moments and people in order to remember and learn from the atrocities, hope, resistance, and truths of the past.

They have documented in graphic detail the tortures, prisons, weapons and assaults by the US (and Australians) on the Vietnamese people. The Agent Orange room was the hardest for me to swallow.

There were children born at the same time I was born, completely deformed and impacted by this chemical, and the consequences of the Agent Orange operation will impact 5 generations of people (3 more generations to come) for 150 years minimum.

I'm so disgusted by this war crime. I'm even more disgusted that the US (and in Australia) continued for decades to use weakened versions of this chemical or our soils and crops in the form of pesticide and herbicide as Roundup, still spraying this poisonous garbage on everyone's crops, learning nothing from the intense suffering of the Vietnamese. Anyone who knows me well knows of my hatred of Monsanto, and seeing direct consequences in the most brutal of ways from their products just boils my blood.

We came out of this experience with a deeper understanding of this period of time, the resilience of the Vietnamese people and all the war and suffering they have gone through attempted occupations and civil wars, and are very grateful for the lives we have led so far in Australia.

      Saigon

      February 27 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Ho Chi Minh City is a very odd mix of very modern and very traditional. The traffic is crazy, with over six million mopeds somehow all seeming to be on the road at the same time. Visited the war remnants museum to learn about the Vietnam War which was far more full of Americas war crimes than I anticipated. To try and forget some of the sadness we went to a nice food market. Good food and strong coffee galore.Read more

      Im Park unterwegs

      March 3 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Read more
