      Chúc mừng năm mới

      January 24, 2020 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      Temples of Da Lat

      August 14, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

After the ride, we returned to Da Lat and stopped off at the Linh Phuoc Pagoda. This mosaic looking complex was built from glass debris, old pottery and porcelain pieces back in 1952. The buildings were impressive featuring Vietnam's largest bell weighing 8.5 tonnes, a dragon made from 12,000 beer bottles and a 17m high lady Buddha made from 650,000 immortal flowers. Below the complex was a random area selling marble and wooden dining furniture for upwards of £15k, strange.

Finally getting back, we left for dinner and enjoyed Mexican burritos and quesadillas beside a pair of live blue parrots on a branch. 10 minutes in the parrots decided to attack the couple next to us flapping on their heads and over their dinner. The girl ran out screaming ‘f**k this s**t’ as the staff walked over to put the parrots back. The solution: give the parrots some food and move the couple one table back. Needless to say our state of relaxation suddenly lessened, even more so when our food arrived.

Lastly we left for a nice cocktail bar with games and live music. On the way home we walked past a vendor selling the famous Da Lat speciality - a hot, sweet soy milk drink and it wasn’t bad!

So far, we're really liking Da Lat. Not really knowing what to expect we'd say the infrastructure is more developed than you might imagine it to be. The area definitely has a French/Swiss alps vibe with the town itself looking European - the slim houses are positioned close together with many of them painted either white or a bright bold colour.

      Day 13 Da Lat

      October 14, 2018 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

For this day the plan was to do a downhill bike tour in the hills around Da Lat. Originally we wanted to do Canyoning but this and Rafting is closed at the moment (because a Korean man died lately - had a heart attack) and so cycling was the best option. Christi told Lion (our guide) we are experienced and want to have the hardest tour they offer. In fact I never did a downhill tour in my life and I even didn't sit on a Mountainbike since years ;-) What a good tour to start with. It did make fun and the landscape was amazing but I was also scared going down the hills too fast. The parts going up the hills nearly killed me, it was also quite hot and if you are not used to it - that is not the best combination. On the steepest downhill part I also fell off the bike but fortunately only at a small pace. At the end of the tour we visited an impressive pagoda and its cellar where the hell of Buddhism is visualized. Back in the city we went to a night market after having a shower. For dinner the owner of the hostel prepared fresh spring rolls and fried rice. There were also other hostel guests joining and so it was quite nice. We went to bed early because of the exhausting day.Read more

      Da Lat- Linh Phouc Pagoda

      May 17, 2019 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

      Temple of the Broken Glass

      September 10, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Rach and I had seen a picture of someone we'd met in Thailand at this temple which looked beautiful so we went to visit it.

Linh Phouc was a marvel to behold, consisting of two temples, one pagoda and one torture chamber. There seemed to be one regular folk temple and one special ceremonies temple which was a feast for the senses. 3 or 4 storeys of coloured tiles everywhere I could look. It was a sight to behold and I think Rach and I spent half an hour in there just staring and wandering around in awe. After leaving we entered what seemed to be a mini theme park dedicated to torture of all kinds. Not gonna like, it was pretty creepy and confusing but later on at the hostel Daniel, our Vietnamese host, explained that they were representative of the crimes people had committed during their life which was odd as I didn't think Bhuddism had a hell...more research needed.Read more
