      רחוב הסכינים

      היום הלכנו לרחוב Kapabashi, הידוע בשם רחוב הסכינים על שם המספר הרב של חנויות סכינים הפזורות לאורכו.
      למען האמת זה רחוב של חנויות של כלי מטבח, מכל הסוגים ולכל הצרכים. מסט כלי אוכל מלא ועד מכשיר לקילוף אספרגוס.
      היום הוא חג כינון החוקה ביפן, וחנויות רבות היו סגורות. אני חושב שזה לטובתנו כי גם ככה המבחר נראה אינסופי.
      המשכנו לצהריים של סושי בKura Sushi, שם אכלנו סושי ממסוע בפעם הראשונה. היה מוצלח.
      הסתובבנו בשוק של אסקוסה בחנויות הרבות וחזרנו בערב לחדר.
      התוכנית היתה להגיע היום לגן החיות בפארק באונו, אבל בטוקיו לדברים יש דרך משלהם. היום מתגלגל בלי ששמים לב. לא הספקנו להגיע לגן החיות אבל עשינו וראינו דברים אחרים.      Read more

      Letzter Abend und ein Fazit

      Fast drei Wochen Japan - was für ein Erlebnis! Das es uns gefallen würde, das war uns eigentlich schon vorher klar aber das wir in jedem Ort so tolle, gastfreundliche Menschen treffen werden, das hat uns einfach umgehauen. Humor, Musik, Filme und natürlich Fussball sind einfach international, man versteht sich mit oder ohne Sprachkenntnissen. Google ist eine enorme Hilfe, bei Sprache und Orientierung. Aber man findet sich doch schnell zurecht. ( der eine ( Eric) etwas besser als manch andere) Japan ist abwechslungsreich, trubelig aber auch ruhig. Besonders aufgefallen ist uns, wie rücksichtsvoll man miteinander umgeht. Die Busse und Bahnen sind so leise, da kann ein Deutsche Bahn-Ruheabteil nur von Träumen. Die Jobs egal, welcher, werden sehr ernst genommen und mit äusserster Sorgfalt ausgeführt, ob es die Salzendkontrolle oder das Säubern von Umkleiden nach jedem Besucher ist. Das Essen ist fantastisch und immer hübsch angerichtet deshalb komme ich gefühlt mit leichter Sumotaille wieder zurück. Aber jedes Gramm war es wert. Ich bin mir sicher, das wird nicht die letzte Reise ins Land der aufgehenden Sonne sein🇯🇵.Read more

      Day 13

      Today was a good one. Nice weather all day. We got up at 9am and headed into Shin-Osaka via metro, took around 20 mins but was tough wheeling big suitcases! Bet glad I spent a little bit of money for a 4 wheeler now as it’s saved me so much hastle!

      We picked up some store bought sushi for the train which is well renowned here, probably better than UK restaurant sushi!
      As it was a clear sunny day bullet train gave us an amazing view of Mount Fuji which I tried to capture below in a video!

      We got to Tokyo around 3pm and had another metro and a walk up a hill in the heat up our hotel! We decided to treat ourselves for the last night and stay in the 5 star Okura hotel in Tokyo! We arrived sweaty but thankfully had bellboys get all our luggage for us. Sinead got us a free room upgrade thanks to her booking.com account and we got treated to a room with amazing views over the city and a great bath! We can actually see Mount Fuji from bed (noticed as I’m writing this in the morning)

      After we checked in we explored the room (it’s a mix of traditional sliding doors and modern) then headed down to use the pool and spa as want to get our moneys worth. We both did 20 lengths and then tried out the facilities (separate for both male and female in Japan). You have to go in completely naked here which is a bit weird but I wasn’t bothered by it. I did some hot cold therapy where I went straight from the cold plunge into the sauna and did that a few times! I then chilled in the relaxation room with views across Tokyo 😎.

      Sinead was more apprehensive about going in to her section so just showered and I met her outside the spa. We got some amazing views of the sunset over Tokyo from back in the room! We then got ready for dinner and headed out to a TEPPANYAKI place I had booked earlier that day. TEPPANYAKI is where the chef for you cooks on a massive grill. We wanted to Ben on the chefs table so had to wait a bit when we got there but got sat eventually! Food was excellent and we had 7 courses and lots of food I’d never tried! Japanese chef in front of us was young but very skilled with the knife! We had crab, scallops, sea urchin, abalone (which never had tried), sirloin and a nice desert with coffee! The chef flambéed our steaks which was cool too see! Only weird bit was the chef putting on live lobsters straight into the grill! They kept trying to run off and squirm away which was a bit squeamish to watch.

      After dinner we headed back to the hotel to explore a bit more and have a drink at the bar. We both got the speciality and was delicious! Sinead called her mum and I went up to run myself a bath! Dont usually have baths but felt I had to try this one. Was weird lying in the dark but turned off all the lights and got a great view of Tokyo at night. There was tv built in and I watched a bit of BBC news! Can’t believe the one time we’re away the northern lights are out, but can’t complain!      Read more

      Katzen Tempel Gotoku-ji/ Akasaka

      Der Gotoku-ji Tempel in Tokyo bietet eine entspannte Atmosphäre abseits der überfüllten Touristenpfade. Besucher können in Ruhe die weitläufige Anlage erkunden und dabei historische Relikte aus der Edo-Zeit wie den Glockenturm und das Familiengrab der Familie Li entdecken. Die zahlreichen Katzenfiguren, darunter die berühmten Maneki nekos, machen den Tempel zu einem besonderen Ort für Katzenliebhaber. Der Tempel ist leicht mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln erreichbar und für alle Besucher barrierefrei zugänglich.

      Natürlich müssten wir auch zur Akasaka Station. Sie wurde in Harry Potter Style umgebaut. Die Hintergrundmusik war von Harry Potter! Das war echt abgefahren und ich als Harry Potter Fan, war einfach nur happy ❤️      Read more

      Konnichiwa, Tokyo!

      Arrived at Narita Airport to throngs of travelers. The train options and connections are dizzying, but with the aid of helpful station staff, we had no hitches getting to our hotel in the Asakusa section of Tokyo, though we had to stand for the entire one-hour ride. Tiny but comfy room. Stopped at 7-11 and Family Mart for after dinner snacks.Read more

      Ein paar eindrücke von Tokyo

      Tokyo hat sehr viele Seiten und Japan wird nicht zu unrecht als Land der Gegensätze beschrieben. Was mir besonders aufgefallen ist sind zum einen die Kultur und Technologie. Alles in Japan ist eine Attraktion. Von mit neunschildern beleuchteten Straßen, Spielhallen, riesige Einkaufszentren über die verschiedenen Gerichte bis hin zu den Tempeln und Schreinen. Zum zweiten gibt es hier Millionen Menschen, aber die Stadt und die Kultur ist so gut daran angepasst dass einem alles so gut wie möglich erleichtert wird. „wenn du Probleme hast beim öffnen von einer Plasikverpackung, dann machst du was falsch“ es gibt überall eine Hilfe zum öffnen. Beim Bahnfahren zum Beispiel muss man nur sein Ticket oder Handy scannen und man ist drin. Am Bahnsteig gibt es Hilfen in welchen Wagon man einsteigen sollte um an der Rolltreppe rauszukommen. Alle warten in einer Reihe an den angezeigten Türen und lassen zuerst aussteigen um dann den Zug zu besteigen. Und was mich fast am Meißen erstaunt hat, dass es so viele ruhige Orte in Tokyo gibt. Zum einen ist die Stadt an sich sehr leise. Durch die gute Bahnanbindung gibt es verhältnismäßig wenig Autos und die unterirdischen Bahnen machen auch kein Lärm. Außerdem findet man trotz der Menschen immer wieder einen ruhigen Ort im Park oder 2 Straßen weiter. Zum Schluss in den Wohnvierteln, ist vergleichbar viel los wie bei uns zu Hause. Ich wohne jetzt auch nicht in der Innenstadt aber das hatte ich trotzdem nicht gedacht.Read more

      Tokyo - Day 2

      May 25 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      So many weddings and gatherings at our hotel! Obis were galore.

      The day was a sunny warm spectacular one. Our guide for the day, Isao, lead us to: a cemetery, pre-war wooden house, a busy street of vendors in Yanaka, an intimate and tasty tempura on rice with broth lunch at a local restaurant, 佳肴 三佐和 日暮里, and a visit to The Former Yasuda House and Garden. We really enjoyed the House and Garden which was built in 1905, all wood, tatami matts and garden views (but no heat and no a/c (of course).

      Isao also helped us learn the metro and to feel the intimacy of small neighborhoods.

      After brief naps, we then had a spectacular meal at Kuhara. Imagine finding yourself in Tokyo in a restaurant that, on our Saturday evening, only served 12 people for the entire evening. We had the night to enjoy our 8 course meal presented by a couple married for 19 years and running this restaurant for 15 years.

      The menu is in Japanese but between the owner’s English and Google Translate, we did fine. Our 8 course, at 13,000 yen, was a delight, start to finish. Duck is their specialty and it occupies center stage.

      Service was gracious and impeccable. It was an intimate and highly memorable meal. We took a variety of pictures with the two owners. After, the wife made us an origami swan.

      Day 5–10

      Tokyo - Day 3

      May 26 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      A big day before the kids arrive!

      Great breakfast at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. Then on to our new hotel, a ryokan, Yuen Shinjuku (ONSEN RYOKAN). Right nearby we saw an annual Shinjuku parade. Just after, we came across a street market which was so fun.

      Our big excursion lead through the heart of Shinjuku and then onto the Metropolitan Government Building for a stunning view of the city. As a Sunday, the streets were not crowded at all.

      Coming back, we visited the utterly amazing food court at Takashimaya, a dependent store, which has curated, high end food counters. Leaving, I couldn’t resist a Starbuck’s run only to stumble into a madhouse of people. Very popular.

      Lunch was a complete success right at the counter of Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi Souhonten for tempura.

      We then sauntered through Shinjuku Gyoen National Park for a quiet and peaceful excursion before heading to our hotel.

      At the hotel, we donned our Yukatas and went to the hotel’s onsen for a deep and restful soak. A nap, quick ramen dinner and the kids arrived to complete our day.      Read more

      Day 8–10

      Tokyo - Day 5

      May 29 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Another epic day. We are in the Shinjuku district, which has great architecture and fabulous people watching.

      Skipping breakfast we headed to the Tsukiji Outer Market based on the rain forecast (rain held off until ). A must see for market lovers, we all went in different directions. Fresh tuna, wagu, grilled oysters (video below), and sukiyaki (really good) . Everyone had a great time.

      We did a brief dip into the Ginza and went to a fabulous stationary store (Ginza Natsuno) with a huge variety of chopsticks, and Ginza department store (Matsuya Ginza-7th floor) with a lifestyle section. By this time, we were all a little tired and retreated to our hotel before our 5 o’clock baseball game.

      The baseball game was really festive and fast moving (our team had three home runs) until about 8 o’clock when the rain got to be too much and we retreated back to our hotel (they called the game five minutes after we left).

      One of the unique aspects of the game is all of the young women that have these big beer backpacks that go around selling the beer to you in your seats (see pic). The crowd is noisy and festive (as shown in the video). The food was really good (short-rib on rice). Yay to Judy and’s Ben for planning it.

      Tokyo - Lost in translation...

      Tokyo...le decalage horaire n'arrange rien a l'impression de ne rien comprendre a l'environnement si bien decrit par Sophia Copolla.
      Nous sommes venus il y a 20 ans. A l'epoque pas de smartphone, pas d'internet accessible, pas d'anglophones, pas de guide touristique genre Routard et pas de touristes non plus ! Aujourd'Hui tout a bien evolué et Google Translate et Map nous facilitent la vie ! Nous avons trouvé notre adresse presque facilement !
