D5 - rest day in Pamplona

      May 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Rest day today, although we still did a fair bit of walking. We found a place just about 1.5km from city centre of Pamplona. Had a sleep in this morning then walked into town and had some coffee in a little cafe in the square. We then made our way to line up to get into the municipal hostel for 11 euros each. Dumped out packs on our beds then out to explore the town. We went to the Pamplona cathedral and had a look around inside, the photos don’t do it justice. The architecture is just amazing. We wandered around town taking in all the beautiful buildings, narrow streets and alleyways. We met up with Chris and Kate for a few wines and pinchos, very delicious. While we were wandering around we watched some of the cyclists and runners that were competing in a triathlon. There was lots of activity going on, bands playing in the street, groups of people sitting around on the ground enjoying each others company and lots of little bars with people coming and going.Read more

      Castrojeriz

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Day 17 Castrojeriz
Distance from Hornillos to Castrojeriz 22kms

We started day 2 of the Meseta and were rewarded with a stunning morning a beautiful sunrise and the sound of the Great Spotted Cuckoo such a charming sound. There was no clock.
Possibly the easiest day so far and one of the most rewarding. Walking between wheat fields after wheat fields could be considered mundane we found it to be a tranquil experience. We entered a small village with a tiny church and prayer room we took a moment to think of those who had made a significant impact on the world.
Stopped to view the remains of the convent Santa Clara (XIV Century) and wondered what the decaying walls could tell us.
Arrived at Castrojeriz early afternoon a lovely village of 500 inhabitants. We were soon scrambling up the hill to the 9th Century castle ruins not a lot left but stunning views of the village and surrounding fields.
We are dining in at the albergue tonight and at 8pm will go down to the cellar for a degustation (Spanish term) of wine. A hard life being a pilgrim.

      12. Etappe Caldas del Reis-Padrón

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Day 12 Past fields of poppies to Santa D

      May 17 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

That field of poppies! A beautiful 23k hike today to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where we are spending the night at Abadia Csitercence, a convent run by the sisters. After looking around the Cathedral of Santa Maria, built in 1504, we climbed up the dark and scary bell tower to see a panoramic view of the city, including the Camino path we will follow in the morning. .Afterward, Kristina and I splerged on a dinner at Los Caballaros, a Michelin restaurant. I would recommend this restaurant for wild boar lol.Read more

      That’s a lot of rain! 🌧️

      May 18 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 45 °F

Today it rained ALL 11.5 miles. 🙃

My face: “This is the greatest day ever”

Brett’s face: I hate every minute of this”

Clearly we have very different perspectives on the day 😜😂

But regardless we made it. 💪🏽

      Some sweet moments:

👉🏽The neighbors put out a free spread to all pilgrims, it was a community breakfast, totally free for anyone who needed a bite in their courtyard. It was awesome. I thought this is how we should live everyday.

👉🏽Going uphill in the rain, in the cold 🥶, in the mud , can test anyone’s faith! I think we passed, barely.

👉🏽 Brett looks cute in a poncho. She doesn’t think so but I do.

👉🏽 As we walked we prayed for our friends in our lives, their families and marriages. This was a sacred moment.

      Route Summary:

      Triacastela to Sarria
      Triacastela, Galicia
11.5 mi, 1129 ft elevation gain

      Route Summary
The route through San Xil and Pintin to Sarria is a journey through the essence of the Galician landscape. This section of the Camino de Santiago is characterised by its natural and peaceful setting, where the routes weave through lush forests and welcoming villages, reflecting rural life at its best.

The stage from Triacastela to Montán is a beautiful introduction to the diversity of the Galician landscape, with paths winding through forests and meadows. The small village of Montán, known for its church dedicated to Santa María, offers a haven of peace and spirituality, allowing pilgrims a moment of reflection in the midst of nature.

Sarria is strategically placed just over the 100Km mark away from Santiago which is the minimum distance to be covered in your pilgrimage for you to be eligible to receive the completion certificate (la Compostela) once you reach Santiago. For this reason, it is the ideal starting place for new Camino walkers.

      Casa Magica Villatuerta

      May 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Arrived at albergi Casa Magica after a full day of walking across the beautiful countryside through Olive groves and vineyards and orchard and wildflowers. Inclines and declines but not too tough, especially with a few rest stops in the villages, or at a stand in the middle of a Olive garden. I followed a blue butterfly today for a while. It helped me go up the hill.

We had a lovely homemade vegetarian paella for dinner with wine, a 3 course meal including wine for $18.

Now time to bunk up with our fellow pilgrims for the night so we can get up and out before 8.

Only 665 more km to Santiago!

      Day 12 to Burgos

      May 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Eish... all the aches and pains came today.... shins are sore... let's hope tomorrow is easier.

Beautiful day and weather was good.... cold, bit of rain but good.

The park into Burgos is amazing! 5km's of green space!

And what a beautiful city! The cathedral is amazing- built on the concept of Notre Dame!

Good food & wine... and a bit of sadness & apprehension- cause tomorrow I move forward on my own... not really sure how I feel about it... it's good having company- even if we don't talk talk all the time...

      Tarifa Stellplatz

      May 18 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      Hornillos

      May 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Day 16 Hornillos
Distance from Burgos to Hornillos 24kms

      Camino Part 2/3 - ‘Mind’.
Having completed Part 1 of the Camino - ‘Physical’ we were about to start Part 2 and walk the Meseta (plateau)
with its relentless kilometers of wheat and oats and not much else for several days. We were ready.
The sun was shining and as we were leaving Burgos were fortunate to spy a pair of storks high up on a monument feeding their young.
We came upon a tiny chapel with a nun in attendance and as we entered were given a necklace (our shield and strength along the way) and a blessing. The nun was so small in stature but so great in her faith.
What a beautiful day it has been walking in such a peaceful setting passing sheep with a shepherd watching over his flock before we stopped for a picnic lunch. The winding path continued but it was flat and we set a good pace.
Hornillos our village for the night is small with many homes abandoned and mud houses still standing some decaying. After checking into our albergue we took a walk around the village and came upon some hobbiton like dwellings and cute cottages.
We loved the first day of the Meseta.
