      Fünf Fotos-Basel Day 4

      25 maja 2022, Szwajcaria ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

"He was as fresh as is the month of May."
      Geoffrey Chaucer

We woke up to the news of the Texas school shooting. As a former teacher, a father, and a grandfather, I have no words other than a feeling of deep despair and anger. I was haunted by that notion as I watched every parent on the streets of Basel today. As we made our way over to Basel's Altstadt GrossBasel (Old Town) we paused to watch elementary aged students play a game of Kubb, a game that is a hybrid of bowling and horseshoes. I loved watching the collective joy of the students engaged in this competition, and I couldn't help but think of students deprived of that joy and future promise. I hope that we figure out a better solution soon. Kids deserve to get to be kids.

We took the time to tour the Basler Munster, a historical and strking sandstone cathedral that was once Catholic and ultimately became a Reformed Protestant Church. The church was originally built in the early 11th century and it was destroyed in an earthquake about three hundred years later. There were several modifications of architecture and style over the centuries.

It was fascinating to tour the crypt and see the remains of the original cathedral with an integrated multimedia production that outlined the timeline of events in the church and society at the time.

Among the famous people buried in the cathedral was Queen Anne of Habsburg and her son Charles; Erasmus, a Catholic priest whose writings has great influence on the Reformation movement; and Jacob Bernoulli, a mathematician known for his contributions to calculus.

In the 1500's many of the paintings and statues of the original church were destroyed in rebellions against what was viewed by Reformists as idol worship. In the 1850's New stained-glass windows were installed. They were quite beautiful, particularly in the light of this sunny day.

I've been meaning to share about one of the prominent icons that we have seen all over the city. At first I thought they were dragons, but we learned that they were instead the baselisk, In medieval animal books, basilisks are often depicted as hybrid creatures with the torso of and head of a rooster, and the abdomen of snake. A basilisk's gaze petrifies or kills. Its breath is deadly poisonous. The legend in Basel was that a jet black rooster laid an egg the size of the rooster and the townspeople must destroy it to save themselves from the hatching of the baselisk. The basilisk has remained an important symbol of Basel over the last five hundred years, and is now depicted carrying the town shield and coat of arms. Harry Potter fans might also recognize the reference to basilisks.

After this visit, we took the light rail to see if we could locate where our river cruise ship was moored. We found it, and we learned that we would be able to board early although our cabin wasn't due to be ready for hours. We returned back to our hotel to retrieve our backpacks, and we made our way back to our boat.

For the remainder of May (thus, my chosen Chaucer quote), we will be aboard Riviera Cruise Lines' MS Geoffrey Chaucer as we make our way up the Rhine from Basel to Köln, Germany. This boat is beautiful and new; it was commissioned in 2020 and Covid limited its use over the last two years.

For the first several hours, we were the only passengers on the boat, and our room was readied for us early. The staff have all been very lovely and welcoming.

We settled into our cabin, Room 222, with visions of the old TV show in our heads. We had a nice nap in our cabin and we then relaxed in the lounge and on the deck. We learned that there will be about 94 passengers on the ship, At first glance at our fellow passengers, it appears that we are on the younger side of the spectrum. Most of the passengers appear to be from the UK. I imagine that we'll have plenty of opportunities to meet them over the next week.

We enjoyed a great dinner, and then we attended an obligatory safety briefing and an overview of our itinerary tomorrow. We feel very fortunate to have this experience. 💞

      Fünf Fotos-Basel Day 3

      24 maja 2022, Szwajcaria ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We enjoyed a laid-back day today. Jim C headed to the laundromat so that our clothes would be ready for our river cruise launch tomorrow. When he returned back to the hotel, he remarked, "It turns out that the first stop was a dry cleaners so I went to France to do the laundry instead. " 🇫🇷 It is a bit surreal to cross the border without it being a convoluted checkpoint.

Yesterday I remarked about us receiving a complimentary Basel Card that gives us free access on all public transportation. An additional perk of the card is discounts to a number of area attractions. We opted to take a trip to the Zoologischer Garten Basel (Basel Zoo) and when we arrived we learned that our admission price had a 50% discount with the card.

It was almost as fun to watch the families and school children at the zoo as the animal exhibits. It felt a bit unusual to be at the zoo without Olive as we frequently take her there. Overall, the zoo made for a nice stroll. One of the exhibits had nutria, a rodent that resembles a beaver. When I looked at the geographical map showing the distribution of this species in South America- they forgot Oregon. I knew that nutria are an invasive species in Western Oregon as they were released in the wild decades ago.

After the zoo, we went to the Markthalle, an open food market and seating area with an extensive cuisine representation. Jim opted for Pad Thai, and I had a Vietnamese noodle dish. I think we were both feeling a bit homesick for take-out back home.

As we were leaving, I noticed the proximity of booths representing countries typically in conflict, and it served as yet another reminder about building bridges across cultural and political divides.

Given our ample lunch, we opted to skip dinner and instead have a beer and people watch near a traffic circle. In contrast to traffic circles in Italy where it's a "me-first" mentality without attention to any other rules, Basel seems like a choreographed cooperation dance. It was fun to watch bikes, scooters, cars, busses and pedestrians looking out for each other. In particular any pedestrian approaching a crosswalk is given right-of-way without exception.

I'm getting ready to call it a night with a cool breeze beckoning me to sleep.

      Gute Nacht, Freunde und Familie.

      Oberland Region

      26 maja, Szwajcaria ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The alps! We decided to use Interlaken as our "base camp" for exploring the region.

We arrived mid day and decided to rent bikes and ride along Brienzersee - a blue green lake east of Interlaken. We followed along a narrow road and stopped both at Iseltwald for lunch and Giessbachfälle! The hills to the waterfall were no joke but made for a fast journey back once we turned around! A street food festival was in full swing when we arrived back in Interlaken; enjoyed a couple beer and a "sushi hotdog" before heading to the hostel to check in.

We stayed at Balmer's Hostel, which is repeatedly voted Switzerland's best hostel and is one of the oldest, opened in 1907. It consisted of 3 or 4 interconnected houses converted into shared dorms, private rooms and lots of different social spaces. They even have a club in the basement, although it wasn't open while we were there. We made fast friends with our neighbors Jay & Shiv from Manchester and signed up for the beer pong tournament that night. The hostel had a very fun and friendly atmosphere!

Day 2 we took the train to Lauterbrunnen - walking along the village streets admiring the many waterfalls! We took a cable car up to a mountain village called Grimmelwald which had spectacular views of the mountains! We walked from here to Mürren and then all the way back down to Lauterbrunnen. Sadly the rain found us for the last hour of our hike as we descended.

Day 3 - Jungfraujoch & Grindelwald. We took an early train from Interlaken to Grindelwald and hopped on the Eiger Express, we would have great views of the Eiger but the clouds were socked in low. From the Eiger Glacier we had another train which tunneled through the mountains up to Jungfraujoch, "The Top of Europe". At about 3650m (12000 feet) above sea level, we could feel the elevation instantly when we got off the train. We were rewarded with blue bird skies and unlimited views above the clouds! The station at the top was massive, with many tunnels leading to other plateau viewpoints, an ice cave and a terrace atop one of the peaks. They also use this station for scientific research at high elevation. We found the highest patio bar in Europe to enjoy the views, and also picked up some treats at the highest Lindt chocolate shop. We were tired from the early wakeup but we're so glad we took an early train as we had no wait, but there was a massive line when we got back down.

We stayed in Grindelwald for the rest of the day and took the gondolas up to First Peak. We had more beautiful views along the way of all the farms surrounded by mountains. They have a free cliff walk here which is not for the faint of heart but offered views looked down and many paragliders.

The photos are from our bike ride, the sushi “hotdog”, the hike from Mürren to lauterbrunnen, JungFrau and finally Grindelwald First

      Wetterhorn & Mittelhorn

      24 maja, Szwajcaria ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

The sun was wavering in it's intentions, but I was set on mine. As soon I set out from Aeschi, I felt the first drops of rain on my neck.

I rode down narrow and winding paths, like in a green roller coaster, to Interlaken. And suddenly, it was a world of tour buses! Japanese and Indian tourists walking backwards, distracted by the photos they want to capture.

I rode straight out as I had another mountain ascent on my mind. Staying with the swiss locals has meant that I get, and follow, these tips to take the regional routes through the mountains. The path up to Grindelwald was a respectable climb, but I pedaled on in good time. Maybe the constant drizzle of rain helps to focus the mind. Or I'm getting better at this.

Grindelwald was another shocking tourist bubble. I had no idea so many Indians came to Switzerland. There were even Indian restaurants up here. After a coffee to watch the rain and the famous Eiger, I rode on further upwards. The crowds thinned out within minutes out of town, and I was again alone in the high mountains.

The clouds were thick and wooly, settled heavily like a scarf around the neck of these pointy black mountains. The rain was not falling as much as just hanging wet and prickly in the cold air.

Just before the 2000 m high pass of Grosse Scheidegg, the clouds moved quickly and revealed the giants Wetterhorn and Mittelhorn right next to me! How were these huge rocks hidden this whole time? I stopped to stay and stare at them. There was a little hut, so I rolled out my sleeping mat for the night. The thick white clouds rolled in and smothered the plateau as it got darker. A beautiful mountain moment when the sun flashed on the pointy peaks before setting for the night.

Spent yesterday crossing the Alps with some stunning scenery. Happened upon a good campsite in a beautiful valley with cable car access to mountain walks, so decided to stay 2 nights. Took the cable car up today and walked down through fields of wild flowers, the only sounds being rushing streams and tinkling cowbells. Czytaj więcej

      Day 124: Swiss Chocolate Tour

      13 maja, Szwajcaria ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Kieran originally signed us up for an English speaking chocolate tour, but the other guests canceled so the guide cancelled. So we decided to execute our own chocolate tour. We accepted today that we would spend a little money and actually pay for food instead of cooking pasta.

We trained downtown from the hostel and started with a steak sandwich recommended by Enda from Armenia. Next, Kieran found 8-9 chocolate stores where we could walk, buy a piece, and move onto the next. It was so much fun and the chocolates ranged from traditional flavors to chocolates with alcohol inside and then pure chocolate liquid cups with strawberries inside.

Next we found a local Swiss craft brewery and Kieran finally got a much needed stout. We debated our dinner choices because cheese fondue is famous in Switzerland but so is raclette, cheese scraped into your plate. We found a place with both! We enjoyed the meal and agreed that Kieran’s mom makes better fondue at home.

Day 123: Scenic Train to Zürich

      12 maja, Szwajcaria ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

With our Eurorail pass, we could use a Panoramic Train between Interlaken, Lucerne, and Zürich. First we needed to hop on a normal regional train to Interlaken.

We find the platform, confirm the direction and train, and get onboard. About 2 minutes before we depart, the train announcer says this train his headed to Bern instead. We, and many others, look around confused and jump up to get off the train. None of us make it off the train as it pushes away from the platform.

We determined that the train was originally headed to Interlaken, but a different train to Bern had been delayed by 40 minutes and they needed to get it out. The monitors didn’t update so many folks were misdirected. It was no issue though as the next station stop served both routes. It gave us more time to grab sandwich meats.

After reaching Interlaken, we settle into the panoramic train and take in the sights of lakes, mountains, and valleys. They build the train so there is max window surface area.

We get into Zürich and their metro trains are covered on the pass so we fork over the $9 euros to ride a train for 7 minutes 🥲 After unpacking at the hostel, we set up at a little cafe to get some work / research done for Austria. Because it was Mother’s Day, the owner made lemon drinks for all the women and it was delicious.
