      Ondres und Capbreton Teil I

      13 Jun 2022, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Baca lagi

      South toward the trail

      17 Jun 2022, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

It was a confusing and tense morning of ticket and train matching. What would have been a simple fix in the old days of lots of station masters who can answer questions is now just a guy you wait in line for an hour to talk to who has no power to touch a Eurrail pass. I think God solved the problem for us. I think. 🤔 I activated our passes but according to my app it called my activation date my first day of travel (we get four) That leaves us one day short. I had reservations to get on the train today and I had activated the passes yesterday but my misunderstanding of what “activation” meant has us messed up. They say on the trail “the Way” will provide. The ticket collector was satisfied with the reservation tickets and didn’t actually check my Eurrail pass. That gives us back a day. The Way did provide. (Before you think I’m getting too mystical, read John 14:6. That’s my understanding of The Way.)

So now we are getting out of the city on the TGV going 300 km/hr for a smaller, slower town. Jon and I have never been to Bordeaux and since the train from Paris to St Jean ran though here anyway we decided to get off and look around. Paris, a city known for style and fashion was hard for me with my three practical zero fashion hiking outfits and no makeup or styling products. I’m sure I looked like a homeless person to them but on the trail I think I’ll fit right in.

I think the whole world is in a heat wave right now. It’s 104 F in Bordeaux. Yuck. It will cool off before the hike but it will also be rainy. Hmmmmm. Which is better?!

On the upside, our two rooms in the Hilton are luxurious compared to that one room in the hostel in Paris. (These were way cheaper too!)

I also saw another couple that was dressed like us- probably other Camino hikers. Slobs unite!

We went to the old town of Bordeaux which turns out was settled by the Romans. I drank from an ancient Roman well (I’m sure the water was fine) and we stumbled on a cathedral that was built in 800’s. No… not 1800’s! My bucket list thing was to put my 104F feet into the Miroir d eau.

Considering Europe is known for their lack of ice and tepid beer I’m surviving considerably better than I’d have thought. I just really want an ice cold water though.

      Montignac

      22 Jun 2022, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      First day on the Camino

      14 Mei 2023, Perancis ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

We walked what is considered a half stage today, but it was actually farther than I've walked on the first day on the Camino Francés. This is the "crossing the Pyrenees" stage. While the terrain isn't difficult (it's actually foothills of the Pyrenees and most of the walking is on a paved road), it is very steep. The first five miles is the steepest section on the entire Camino Francés.

In the past I've split this section by spending the night at Refuge Orisson which was the only hostel between St Jean Pied de Port in France and Roncesvalles in Spain. There is now another hostel one kilometer up the road, but my walking companions weren't keen on sleeping in bunk beds so we chose to use a service that picked us up when we reached the halfway point of this stage - about 7.5 miles.

The day started out drizzly, but the walk was fairly dry until we reached Orisson where we stopped for lunch before continuing for 3 more miles. After a bowl of delicious vegetable soup we set out again for about another hour or so of walking until we reached our pick up point. Then it started to rain - lightly at first and we all put on our ponchos and deployed our handsfree hiking umbrellas. It wasn't long before we were in a torrential downpour with some hail mixed in. I also heard some thunder rumbling in the distance, and I thought of my umbrella and poles - the umbrella has a fiberglass shaft and ribs, and the piles are carbon fiber, so I was hoping that they wouldn't make me a lightning rod! Fortunately, I didn't see any lightning - in fact I couldn't see much at all at this point due to the mist that formed up in the mountains. Thankfully, the shuttle service sent the van up early because of the worsening weather and I arrived at the meeting point just as he got there. The others were behind me, and very happy to see a warm, dry van waiting for them.

As is typical of days like this when we got back to town the skies cleared and it was beautiful!

Until the rain really started the views were stunning, and I regret not taking more pictures.

In the afternoon we walked around a bit more in St Jean which is an interesting old walled Basque town before heading to dinner.

Tomorrow we will take the shuttle back to where we left off - hopefully it will be a lot dryer!

      Over the pyranees part 2

      13 April, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Too many good photos - had to share more!

I love seeing the horses free to go wherever they wish. And some of them wear bells, just like the cows in Switzerland. Have the sound on for the videos - so cool.

Somewhere along the way we crossed over into Spain, but it was not super clear except for the slight change in the route markers.

I was pretty pooped at the 3 hour mark, so by the 6 hour mark, I think I was running on just water and Paul’s encouragement. We started sharing which body parts were talking to us.

We’ll see how sore we are in the morning.

The Albergue is part of a monastery set in the hills of Roncesvalles. It’s incredibly well organized, clean, and volunteers help with the set up process.

I’m impressed with the beds and lockers, clean shared bathroom and hot shower.

Glad to pay for the pilgrim’s dinner and breakfast. When do we eat??

      Camping lou P'tit Poun

      2 Mei, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

      Orisson

      2 Mei, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

      Camino de Santiago:
      Day 1 Orisson Spain
      Distance from SJPdP
      to Orisson 8.4kms

The day had finally arrived and we stepped onto the “way” with an urgency to begin and much excitement.
The distance was only 8.4km but from the first step it was a steep climb to 800m climbing up and over the Pyrenees. Sheep grazed with bells around their necks donkeys ignored us and onwards and upwards we walked. The sun was shining upon us it was a magnificent day and we soaked up the views the beautiful landscape the pilgrims that we passed or passed us and were thankful to arrive early afternoon at our albergue for the night. A fabulous start it couldn’t have been better and we toasted our arrival with a basque cider.
I think we will sleep well tonight.

      Pintxo Eguna

      4 Mei, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

      Hul i teltet

      5 Mei, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C
