      Top of the morning sunrise

      July 25, 2022 in Gibraltar ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

I had read that the sunrise was going to be beautiful, so I got up in time to get some pictures before and had some coffee while watching the sunrise from the starboard side of the ship which was facing the Rock of Gibraltar 🇬🇮

I had downloaded a map to get a lay of the land, but it’s a small area, and fairly easy to navigate. Once disembarking the ship, the cruise terminal has a tourist information booth where you can get a nice, large map.

We didn’t have any planned excursions and thought we were going to walk to the cable cars to get up the mountain, but there were tons of “driver guides” ready to take guests on tours that were supposed to last 1.5-2 hours for £35. David, our guide was both fluent in English and Spanish, and the tour included St. Michael’s Cave, the Apes feeding area, the Skywalk, WWII Tunnels, and the Moorish Castle. Europa Point was not a scheduled stop, but I asked the driver if he would go there and luck had it that a family of 5 wanted to go to Europa Point as well, so he took the 7 of us in his Mercedes mini van.

      Linea de la Concepción

      November 22, 2022 in Gibraltar ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      November 27, 2023 in Gibraltar ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      September 13, 2022 in Gibraltar ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Day 22 - Gibraltar, Great Britain

      November 3, 2023 in Gibraltar ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

LAND AHOY - thank goodness…it’s been a few long days at sea with a lot of ‘turbulence’. Today we have arrived in Gibraltar and today, we are going to cycle to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. We had 10 riders and I think they were all from the ship. Pretty intense trip but definitely worth it and now off the bucket list. The roads were narrow, some were pretty steep and a ton of taxis and buses..was a bit ridiculous and reminded me of the bus trip to Victoria Peak or Stanley Park in Hong Kong. It’s November, it must be completely unmanageable during peak tourist season. We stopped at a few viewing points which were stunning, including riding across the runway that, in effect, is the boundary between Gibraltar, Great Britain and Spain. I found myself focusing more on the bike and pedaling cuz you really didn’t want to stop cuz very difficult to get going again on an incline. The worst part, I had my Map my Run ready to go and was sure I had started it but NOPE 🤬. Somebody else did so I took a screenshot of hers. She had clocked us for a 12km ride but Paul thought it was closer to 18; she said the elevation gain was 1800 feet. The guide didn’t give us a lot of information on Gibraltar so I googled 5 interesting facts. Here they are:
      1. The current population of Gibraltar in 2023 is 32,688, a 0.12% increase from 2022;
      2. Gibraltar is only 6.8 km2 in size;
      3. Gibraltar is a British overseas territory, which means that it is under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom, but technically it is not part of the nation;
      4. Personal taxes are low across the board, with an effective rate of income tax of only 25% (27% for a period of two years from 1 July 2022 as a response to Covid expenditures) on all incomes up to £500,000. All companies in Gibraltar pay only 12.5% tax on profits; and
      5. The Gibraltar airport is the only commercial airport in the world that has a highway passing across its runway. To avoid nasty collisions between planes and road vehicles, the traffic on the highway is closed for 10 minutes in the event of a landing or a takeoff.

      Gibraltar

      March 27, 2023 in Gibraltar ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

      Hier ist alles very British.

      Dritter Tag in Gibraltar

      February 16 in Gibraltar ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

      Betreten verboten...

      April 29, 2023 in Gibraltar ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Die Reise kann also weitergehen...

    • Day 25

      Gibraltar

      February 27 in Gibraltar ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Lovely weather today although cool this morning. Our bus driver told us we were lucky because yesterday had been wet and cloudy.
The views from the top of the rock were amazingly clear. We could easily see the coast of North Africa and the Sierra Nevada in Spain.
You can look down at the airport runway which separates Gibraltar from Spain. There is a pedestrian crossing over the runway!
Susan was very brave and ventured out of the bus to meet the macaque monkeys. There were only four and a baby and they behaved themselves, not living up to their mischievous reputation.
Walked into town after lunch. Full of English stores and pubs with pleasant frontages. Lots of liquor and tobacco shops as well as Next, M&S, Monsoon, etc. It's quite strange , everything is priced in pounds but they accept Euros. People speak both English and Spanish and seem to swap from one to the other at random. Children coming out of the high school were also conversing in both languages.
It was a long walk from the port into town and quite warm in the afternoon so we are both quite tired. I bought a nice bottle of Cognac, duty free. It had been priced incorrectly so I got it for £10 less than it should be, a real bargain.
A Beatles tribute group played for us this evening. The same one that we heard on our cruise around the UK last August. The same set and the same very good quality.

Malaga, Gibilterra e Jerez de la Fronte

      November 3, 2023 in Gibraltar ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C
