      Auf der Suche nach den Feen

      Bei Luss, am Loch Lomond gibt es einen Feen Wanderweg. Sehr schön verwunschen im Wald mit viel Farn, liebevoll angelegt. Wenn man sich ein bisschen mehr Mühe gibt als ich, kann man unterwegs einige Rätsel machen und bekommt als Lösung einen Zauberspruch. Pech für mich!
      Durch die Berge und immer wieder am Wasser entlang ging es weiter, zwischendurch hatten wir den Eindruck wieder in Norwegen zu sein, Fjordlandschaft in grau.
      Eigentlich wollten wir nachher in ein Pub zum Fußball gucken, aber wir sind schon wieder müde und müssten gut 3km hin und zurück fahren. Da für später auch Regen angesagt ist, am besten mit dem Auto. Vielleicht gucken wir einfach ein anderes Spiel.      Läs mer

      Edinburgh - Day 2

      Another big walk about today. Close to 25K steps! What better way to see a city with so much of interest to see though, eh? Our plan for today had been to walk up the castle and tour inside. Unfortunately, we weren’t the only ones with that in mind. So, admission tickets were sold out for the day and we couldn’t get in! Everyone had bought them online beforehand. Now you not only have to book accommodations and transportation beforehand, you need to do that for popular tourist attractions as well, it seems.
      Sometimes things happen for a reason that isn’t always immediately apparent. After finding out that we couldn’t tour the castle, we walked back down the hill and came across the National Art Gallery. It is free of charge so we decided to check it out. Turns out that the museum contains a very large collection of paintings and art including from the likes of Rembrandt and Matisse. It was more than you could possibly appreciate in one visit, but it was enjoyable to take in a sampling for a few hours.
      From the museum we walked back to our place of stay for lunch and a rest before continuing the walk about. Our next destination was Dean’s Village, a picturesque area of town with a small river where there were once several mills for grinding grain to supply the city’s bakeries. We followed a path along the river all the way to our next destination, The Royal Botanical Gardens. That was also very enjoyable. There are several areas, organized into themes such as Chinese Medicinal garden, Rock Garden, Woodlands Garden … each with a huge collection of plant species, many we had never before seen.
      We had by now covered a lot of area and it was time to pick up some food and head back to our room to make dinner. I had a tasty East Indian curried chicken with rice meal. Laura and Emma had pasta.      Läs mer

      Wallace Monument

      Nur weil wir gestern zufällig einen Flyer vom Wallace Monument in der Hand hatten und das Bild echt spektakulär aussah, sind wir heute nach Stirling gefahren. Was für ein Glück!
      Eigentlich wollten wir erst zum Stirling Castle, da war aber der Parkplatz voll und irgendwo in der Stadt parken (mit Anhänger) war auch nicht einfach möglich.
      Dann eben erst zum Monument, da war nicht nur genug Platz, der Parkplatz ist auch noch kostenlos. 👍🏼
      Das Wallace Monument ist ein 67m hoher Turm, der - Überraschung - zu Ehren dem Freiheitskämpfer William Wallace gebaut wurde.
      Bis zur Aussichtsplattform braucht man nur 246 Stufen in einer engen Wendeltreppe hochzuklettern, dann hat man eine wunderbare Aussicht. Leider muss man später die Stufen auch wieder nach unten laufen.      Läs mer

      Edinburgh, Scotland

      And so, another overseas adventure has begun for Laura and I! Day 1 was a long, travel day beginning at 2:30 pm when I left Duncan to pick Laura up from work and drive down to Victoria to meet up with Marc and drive out to the Victoria airport. We had a bit of stress on the Malahat when we came to a sudden standstill just south of the Shawnigan Lake exit and saw traffic backed up for as far as the eye could see! There had been a vehicle accident, but luckily, it was just being cleared as we arrived, and soon traffic was flowing, albeit very slowly for quite a distance.
      The flight to Vancouver and then the connecting flight to London both left on time and we had seats together despite not having paid for seat selections when booking. We were also able to check in our carry-ons for free, which was nice. On arrival at Heathrow in London we made our way on foot and train to terminal 5 where we found a Cafe Costa and stopped for lattes. Emma arrived at Heathrow from Newquay, on the English coast, soon after, and we headed to section A9, where we arranged to meet, just inside the security zone for departures.
      It was great seeing her again! Emma had been traveling through Europe with her friend, Emma for 6 weeks. The “M&M’s” visited England, The Netherlands, France, Poland, Italy, Austria, Spain and Portugal together and now, Emma, would travel to Scotland and Ireland with us for the next three weeks before heading off on her own for an additional month of travel.
      We had to wait a few hours at Heathrow, but soon we were on our way to the final destination for the day, Edinburgh. Once there we made our way to the bus stop and caught the bus to town where we got off just a few hundred meters from our AirBNB accommodation. We were a little concerned on arrival when we couldn’t find the lock box with the key to get inside, but soon realized that the room was on Atholl Lane not Atholl Crescent!
      Shortly after dropping off our luggage in the room we walked a short distance to a local pub where we had dinner. Laura had a vegan chili, I had the meat version, and Emma had Mac ‘n Cheese. I also quenched my thirst with both an Ossian beer (a local beer with citrus added) and a Scottish lager. The pub was packed as it was open mic night. We left shortly after that started at 9 pm.       Refuge de Meanach > Kinlochleven - 15km

      Il nous reste 15km à faire pour atteindre Kinlochleven, alors on se dit que cette journée devrait se passer tranquillement ! Mais bon forcément, elle a eu son lot de surprises...

      Premièrement, pour continuer la trace, il faut passer de l'autre côté d'une rivière. Un pont est indiqué sur les cartes, mais une fois arrivés à destination, il n'y a rien qui ressemble de près ou de loin à un pont. Il faut donc traverser à pied, avec les vélos ! Heureusement le courant n'est pas très fort, et la rivière n'est pas très profonde. Bastien passe les deux vélos et nous nous posons un peu au soleil de l'autre côté, le temps de se réchauffer les pieds glacés par l'eau froide.

      Ensuite, nous prenons donc la route vers la ville, mais les 15km qu'il reste à faire sont des kilomètres de chemin caillouteux une nouvelle fois... On pousse donc les vélos, en se disant que tout cela est bientôt fini et qu'on sera bien en arrivant au camping pas trop tard.
      C'était sans compter sur Mylène : 3 kilomètres après une pause que nous avons faite dans la matinée au bord du lac Eilde Mor, elle se rend compte qu'elle a oublié son sac banane là-bas... Nous prenons la décision de laisser les vélos et de faire l'aller-retour en trottinant. Mylène, plus rapide, finit par retrouver son sac, et nous voilà repartis dans l'autre sens pour finir ce périple qui paraît sans fin.

      Encore un peu de chemin, et nous arrivons enfin à Kinlochleven, petite bourgade qui sert de point de départ à de nombreux randonneurs. Avant de rejoindre le camping quelques kilomètres plus loin, nous déjeunons, Mylène a même acheté des glaces pour se faire pardonner !

      Nous voilà ensuite enfin au camping, situé au bord du Loch Leven, assez tôt pour avoir le temps de faire une lessive, changer des plaquettes et graisser les transmissions. Maintenant, c'est repos !      Läs mer

      Culzean Castle

      Um zu überprüfen ob unsere National Trust Mitgliedschaft wirklich auch für Schottland gilt, haben wir heute Culzean Castle besucht. (Hat ohne Probleme geklappt, wir mussten keinen Eintritt zahlen.)
      Eine beeindruckende Schlossanlage aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, die für den 10. Earl of Cassilis, David Kennedy gebaut wurde.
      Nicht ganz pünktlich zur Öffnungszeit, aber noch vor der ersten Führung waren wir dort und konnten so in Ruhe und fast alleine die Räume besichtigen.
      Das man direkt vom Eingangsraum in die Waffenkammer kommt könnte man durchaus abschreckend finden. Hier befindet sich die größte Waffensammlung von Großbritannien, abgesehen natürlich von der in Windsor Castle.
      Die obersten Etage des Schlosses wurde General Eisenhower, nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg, auf Lebenszeit zur Verfügung gestellt, als Dank und zur Anerkennung für seine Verdienste während des Krieges - er war immerhin viermal dort. Inzwischen wird die Etage als Hotel genutzt.
      Die Küche hat mir auch sehr gut gefallen, ich hätte sie nur gerne etwas moderner, Größe und Aussicht sind perfekt.
      In der Orangerie duftet es nach Lavendel, obwohl die großen Büsche noch gar nicht blühen. Durch die Parkanlage sind wir im Bogen zum Strand gelaufen und zurück zum Eingang.      Läs mer

      House 3 and 3.1 Scotland ending

      Scotland is a great place to visit. It’s different than the U.S. but not so different that it’s all strange. It’s just enough to keep you on your toes.

      The weather was generally nice with a bit of rain tossed in to remind us we were way, way, way north, as if the sunsetting at 10:30pm wasn’t enough.

      During our stay our friends Donna and Jim caught up with us on their adventure back to the states from Ecuador.

      We met up with family Shirley and Lee and “golfed” St. Andrews.

      We had 2 meetups with Facebook friends from our Go With Less group.

      We had a great time and we would recommend it to everyone.      Läs mer

      Kinlochleven > Invergarry - 80km

      Nous nous sommes endormis sous le soleil, nous nous réveillons sous la pluie mais nous avions prévu le coup cette fois-ci : le petit-déjeuner se fera sous la tente et dès qu’une éclaircie se présente, nous plions bagages, direction l’île de Skye.
      Malheureusement il y a peu de routes en Écosse et le seul itinéraire possible passe par certaines très passantes, nous nous attendons donc à lever le bras en l’air souvent quand les voitures passent trop près…
      Nous commençons la journée en longeant le loch Leven, les rhododendrons sont en fleurs et égaient notre route.
      Arrivés dans la ville de Fort William, nous nous ravitaillons en nourriture et alcool à brûler car il n’y aura pas de magasin avant demain après-midi.
      Nous longeons ensuite un canal qui cette fois-ci est agréable et roulant, avant d’arriver au Loch Lochy. Les paysages sont encore une fois magnifiques avec un ciel qui passe du bleu au gris très sombre, accompagné d’averses qui font le charme de l’Écosse.
      Nous trouvons ensuite un super spot pour bivouaquer et Bastien arrive même à allumer un feu qui éloigne les midges. Ça y est, nous sommes de vrais aventuriers !      Läs mer

      Arthur's Seat & St Andrews

      Heute waren wir nochmal in Edinburgh und sind bei bestem Wetter den Arthur's Seat hochgewandert ⛰️. Das war schon steil zum Schluss und mega windig aber war eine schöne Wanderung 😊🌬🌞.
      Danach sind wir in die Uni- und Golfstadt St. Andrews gefahren. Hier ist der älteste noch vorhanden Golfplatz und die Stadt liegt direkt am Meer und ist echt ganz süß 😊      Läs mer

      Gaur > Refuge de Meanach - 30km

      Après une journée bien fatiguante la veille, nous nous réveillons avec pour ambition d’aller petit-déjeuner à la Corrour Station House, le café/restaurant situé à la gare de Corrour, la gare ferroviaire la plus haute du Royaume-Uni (1340 pieds, soit 400m).
      Seulement 15 kilomètres à parcourir... Mais c’était sans compter la qualité de la route sur les 10 derniers. Après avoir quitté la Great North Trail, nous revoici dessus, avec des chemins de grosses caillasses et un bon dénivelé plus adaptés aux marcheurs et aux VTT (soit dit en passant, souvent électriques)…
      Après avoir hésité plusieurs fois à faire demi-tour, nous parvenons tant bien que mal à destination pour l’heure du déjeuner et dégustons un délicieux curry végétarien.
      Il nous reste à présent 20km dans la montagne pour rejoindre Glencoe, nous espérons que le parcours sera plus adapté à nos vélos. Les 5 kilomètres suivants le confirment, nous sommes sur un chemin de gravier, facilement praticable !
      Passés une rivière, nous arrivons sur un sentier, clairement pas faisable avec nos vélos mais nous décidons de continuer en espérant une amélioration et parce que revenir sur nos pas nous aurait amené à faire un énorme détour.
      Et dans quelle aventure nous nous sommes encore embarqués : la fonte de la neige a creusé plusieurs torrents, rejoignant la rivière, que nous devons traverser. Mylène n’arrive pas à porter son vélo sur certains passages, c’est donc Bastien qui s’y colle.
      Après 6km en 3h, une belle fatigue et les pieds trempés : il est déjà presque 19h, nous devons donc réfléchir à bivouaquer une nouvelle fois car nous n’atteindrons pas la ville avant encore 10km.
      Nous sommes au milieu de nulle part, Bastien part en repérage. Et la, comme tombée du ciel, la maison à 50m, qui semblait inhabitée, est en fait un refuge où nous allons pouvoir faire un feu et dormir à l’abri ! Un groupe de marcheurs arrive quelques minutes après, heureusement, le refuge possède deux pièces. Un des marcheurs nous propose même de l'eau filtrée pour qu'on puisse cuisiner sans se poser de question !      Läs mer
