      Dag 20 Panorama weg

      June 10, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Laatste echte vakantiedag.

      Jauenpass

      May 22 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

With the weather forecasts swinging this way and that - and often missing, I decided to ride on East. On Dario's reco, I planned to ride over the Jauenpass up at 1500 m.

The ride up was with a sombre light, with sudden splashes of sunlight giving emerald green views. These are the pre-Alps, so they're generously forested and make for pleasant riding. As pleasant as cranking up 1000m can be.

I rode down the other side of the pass in a blaze, at one point hitting 65 kmph! From there on the trail joined the lake route, heading towards Thunersee.

Near Spiez I climbed up to Aeschi and was greeted warmly by Nicole (swiss flight attendant), Adrian and their sons. We ate a lovely meal, with me trying to explain my story in German now instead of French. Somewhere close to the Jauenpass, the language had silently switched to German.

      Oberland Region

      May 26 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The alps! We decided to use Interlaken as our "base camp" for exploring the region.

We arrived mid day and decided to rent bikes and ride along Brienzersee - a blue green lake east of Interlaken. We followed along a narrow road and stopped both at Iseltwald for lunch and Giessbachfälle! The hills to the waterfall were no joke but made for a fast journey back once we turned around! A street food festival was in full swing when we arrived back in Interlaken; enjoyed a couple beer and a "sushi hotdog" before heading to the hostel to check in.

We stayed at Balmer's Hostel, which is repeatedly voted Switzerland's best hostel and is one of the oldest, opened in 1907. It consisted of 3 or 4 interconnected houses converted into shared dorms, private rooms and lots of different social spaces. They even have a club in the basement, although it wasn't open while we were there. We made fast friends with our neighbors Jay & Shiv from Manchester and signed up for the beer pong tournament that night. The hostel had a very fun and friendly atmosphere!

Day 2 we took the train to Lauterbrunnen - walking along the village streets admiring the many waterfalls! We took a cable car up to a mountain village called Grimmelwald which had spectacular views of the mountains! We walked from here to Mürren and then all the way back down to Lauterbrunnen. Sadly the rain found us for the last hour of our hike as we descended.

Day 3 - Jungfraujoch & Grindelwald. We took an early train from Interlaken to Grindelwald and hopped on the Eiger Express, we would have great views of the Eiger but the clouds were socked in low. From the Eiger Glacier we had another train which tunneled through the mountains up to Jungfraujoch, "The Top of Europe". At about 3650m (12000 feet) above sea level, we could feel the elevation instantly when we got off the train. We were rewarded with blue bird skies and unlimited views above the clouds! The station at the top was massive, with many tunnels leading to other plateau viewpoints, an ice cave and a terrace atop one of the peaks. They also use this station for scientific research at high elevation. We found the highest patio bar in Europe to enjoy the views, and also picked up some treats at the highest Lindt chocolate shop. We were tired from the early wakeup but we're so glad we took an early train as we had no wait, but there was a massive line when we got back down.

We stayed in Grindelwald for the rest of the day and took the gondolas up to First Peak. We had more beautiful views along the way of all the farms surrounded by mountains. They have a free cliff walk here which is not for the faint of heart but offered views looked down and many paragliders.

The photos are from our bike ride, the sushi “hotdog”, the hike from Mürren to lauterbrunnen, JungFrau and finally Grindelwald First

Heaven is a place on Earth

      June 6 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Wow, Switzerland is beautiful, and I didn't even get up into the mountains.

The crystal clear lakes, waterfalls everywhere with snowcapped mountains. If I was religious, this would be how I'd imagine heaven to look.

We stayed in a place called Wilderswil, and the view from my room was amazing.

As beautiful as it is, I couldn't live there. It's too strict for me. For example, you can't flush the toilet after 10 pm. And you're not allowed to hike naked... so I'm out! 😁 But I'll definitely be back for some hiking!

      Über die Glaner Alpen

      August 13, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Wispile

      December 25, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

A couple km up at Wilespie (pronouced Vishpeel... I think).

We thought hiking with about fifty layers of clothing would be a good idea. It wasn't. We got about 500m out and had to turn back due to fitness limitations and ensuing heat stress. Wish I had a snowmobileRead more

      Geburtstagsfeier im Berner Oberland

      July 4, 2020 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      Rothorn

      July 5, 2020 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Read more

      THE SWISS ALPS !

      June 23, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

So I got myself over to the mountains ! I was worried about the trains getting there but I managed pretty well🤞
The train ride to Grindelwald was like nooo otherrrr. I have decided that this blue is my favourite colour. I sat next to a girl from Vietnam who was travelling with another Vietnamese girl that she had met by talking in Vietnamese on the phone and they had been together for the last 3 days. Her name is Khanh and she was doing uni on exchange in Madrid and we chatted the whole train ride.
I was trying to ask the lady in the seat opposite me something so I asked if she spoke English and she said no but then started talking to me in English so I was so so confused. When she got off, Khanh proceeded to tell me that I had actually asked her if I she spoke German. Welp 🙊
Anyway I caught the gondola up to Maennlichen and took a quick selfie because I was the only one in it and it’s not everyday you can get a photo with such ginormous mountains. I hope the gondola camera security people enjoyed watching me hold on when I went over the bumpy bits 🥰
There were some cute cows with bells that rang when they moved and then quite a big cow as the kids playground.
I walked from Maennlichen about an hour and a half to Kleine Scheidegg and I saw a group of 3 walkers ( who turned out to be from England and one had a daughter living in Melbourne) trying to take a self timer photo with Mount Eiger (and it was not working for them) so I offered to get one for them. They then snapped this shot of me , so here I am with Mount Eiger !
Then also the same with these 2 girls when I walked into a cute viewpoint hut at Kleine Scheidegg, so here is me in my blue raincoat and backpack- and then a selfie with my blue bucket hat to match💙 no I did not bring any other clothes as my brain didn’t really register that it was in the mountains, there was snow, and so it would be cold? Very luckily I had a completely funny day until I got onto my train home !
I have also added some more cows for your enjoyment (make sure to imagine the bells ringing when they move). And then here are some more pics on the train ride down to Lauterbrunnen ;))

      Show #8 - Thun

      June 18, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Aufbauen, Show spielen, Abbauen.
