  • First break

    March 6, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

A first break after cycling along the wind. Is it always only really headwinds? :-) Feeling good on the bike though, this is nice to be on the move - and enjoying a nice home made sandwich!

  • Mission begins!

    March 7, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

The clear skies from last night have disappeared. Got to pack up in the grey damp. Ugh, some soup first.

I get going because I am on a mission today. My air mattress popped it's baffles on the first night. The mattress is 10+ years old and was already popping, but I thought I could use it for a while. Yup, half a night. Thanks Obama.

Sleeping on an incline is hard, but luckily I'm a pro. Decided to get a new mattress - after having just gotten a new tent the last evening! The next good outdoor shop is nearly 100 km away!

  • Where he was born

    March 7, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Hartje, where my bicycle Schopper was built, turns out to be on the Weserradweg. Coincidence?

Got a coffee to linger close to here for a bit. Ended up gatecrashing an old ladies coffee club and having to (not) explain why I'm doing the route in the winter. And then overhear where are the best shops for jackets. Or who is actually not in the Altersheim, but just in a Reha after all. Friendly bunch to chat with while I recharge.Read more

  • Mission Minden!

    March 7, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Made it to Minden, the promised land of the outdoor shop, with 20 minutes to spare. Snapped up a new exped, and the guy was good enough to throw in a neat discount.

"You came all the way from Verden? Uhh how much more are you going to ride today?", he said looking at the no-longer-dusk sky.

He recommended a döner place to grab a bite, and to look for camping in the next town. I figure I can eat quickly and make it!

  • Dark & chill scouting in Porta

    March 7, 2024 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

With no good places visible, and no place to camp and it being already dark, I figured I should worry. But that's difficult on a full stomach. So I just thanked Schopper for being a champ and rode around many kms doing night tourism. And peeping into the shadows for nice spots, or else I'll find a hotel.

It's surprising how relaxing it can be when the illusion of choice disappears.

  • River beach camp!

    March 7, 2024 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 3 °C

Whoa hey, found a beautiful sandy bar overlooking the river! Set up tent and the new mattress.

Clear skies, dry night, and a full hip flask. This is a great camp feeling!

    Mission accomplished.

    Distance covered: 103 km
    Sandal days: 2
    Temperature: 2⁰ C
    Wild camps: 2
    Bicycle tourists seen: 0

Worryingly, day 2 was already an ordeal.

Covered 100 kms today. My butt is still in the game though.

  • Ice house

    March 8, 2024 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 -1 °C

Birds chirping, a red glow of the rising sun behind the river. Waking up in an ice house, the whole place is covered in ice crystals. Good thing is that nothing is wet. Though everything needs a wipe.

Thankful for good gloves, and that shepherd who first tamed the merino sheep.

Reconfigured home (and found selfie stick) to a new config because of the new mattress. Let's see if Schopper likes Crazy Fish.

  • Nuclear Night

    March 8, 2024 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 7 °C

The twin towers of the nuclear power station stand out over the surrounding plains, green and innocuous. I'm not in a protest, but I'm camping here anyway in the warm light of German sustainable energy. The wind mills behind are turning hard, so I better find shelter. Soon as the Roulade lets me worry again.

    Distance covered: 68 km
    Sandal days: 3
    Temperature: 5⁰ C
    Wild camps: 3
    Bicycle tourists seen: many!
    Food: nussecken, brötchens, Rinderroulade

It's been a sunny day, with plenty of nice breaks and food.
