Cong AbbeySeptember 5, 2019 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C
The day starts with a luxurious breakfast in the hotel restaurant 😋and a group photo in the chilly wind in front of the bus... 🙄
Today's programme envisages a drive in direction North ending with two nights in Letterkenny, an Irish town right on the border with the UK.
Our first stop is at the Cong village, famous for being the filming location of "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. This little town is also home to Ashford Castle, used as an exclusive resort or wedding venue (overnight prices can go beyond 2000 €/night!!! ).
Given our limited budget, we visit another local (and free-of-charge!) attraction: the Cong Abbey. It's a ruined abbey built in grey stone, sided by a closer and surrounded by an ancient graveyard. The initial construction dates back to the 7th century, but it was actually rebuilt in the 12th century after a major fire. The abbey was erected close to a creek flowing through a lush garden. 🌱
After a quick visit of the abbey, we decide to have a walk through the village, which turns out to be made of just two tiny streets with cute little houses. However, in a local shop just in front of our meeting point I find a lovely green beanie. Great souvenir and very useful accessory given the weather... 😊Read more
