Culloden

The Battle of Culloden would be as familiar to Brits as Gettysburg is to Americans. It’s one of the most famous battles in British history and also the last one fought on British soil. The visitors’ center does a great job telling the story with an expert guide to take you around the battlefield, a full 360 degree reenactment film, and the death mask of Bonnie Prince Charlie who led the rebel forces. One unique and memorable installation is a wall on the side of the museum which has 50 bricks protruding to show the losses of the king’s forces and, just to the right of that, there are 1500 protruding bricks to show the number of Jacobites killed. It was a slaughter. And it’s also a turning point in Scottish history because it began the English attempt to destroy Highland culture by outlawing kilts, the Gaelic language, and ownership of weapons. They wanted to punish the Highlanders for the Jacobite Rebellion and make sure it never happened again.Meer informatie

Loch Ness & Urquhart Castle

It was a gorgeous day for a cruise on Loch Ness and a chance to explore Urquhart Castle. It stood for 1000 years in this strategic point on the loch until it was destroyed by the English in the 17th century.Meer informatie

Highland Shortbread Showdown

I had been looking forward to this for weeks since I found out I’d be in Inverness at the same time as the Highland Shortbread Showdown of 2024. It was just across the street from my hotel so I went early to beat the crowds. I’m glad I did. It tuned out to be quite a popular event, and by noon it was packed. When you walk in they give you a chip to cast your vote for the people’s choice award, and you just begin sampling. Coffee and whisky were free. Contestants were from all over Scotland and they each added a unique twist usually involving regional specialties or liqueurs. Everyone had a traditional recipe to try as well. My vote went to Mackenzie’s Bakery from Skye for their honey and oat entry. I realized later that I had been to their bakery on the square in Portree, the central town on the island, and I loved their jam doughnuts too. And they won! They were chosen best overall and given the showdown trophy.Meer informatie

Dunnottar

Dunnottar Castle is credited with saving the Honours of Scotland (Scottish Crown Jewels) when all of Scotland was invaded and the castle stood as the last holdout. They had been used in the king’s coronation but couldn’t be returned to Edinburgh because Oliver Cromwell had marched north and taken the city. It was decided that Dunnottar would be the safest place and they were smuggled into the castle in sacks of wool just before Cromwell’s troops laid siege. When the castle surrendered six months later, the honours were nowhere to be found and could not be destroyed by the English forces. The wife of the governor of the castle had been allowed to visit three times during the siege. Each time she hid the crown, sceptre, or sword in among her things and got them past the English to be brought to a nearby church and buried under the floor. At the time of the Restoration, the honours were dug up and returned to the King.Meer informatie

Stonehaven

Farther up the coast lies the town of Stonehaven which is a beautiful fishing port. I was thinking of the pilgrimage to Santiago all morning as I walked along the cliff between Dunnottar and Stonehaven, and then, in the town I came upon the Church of St James the Great (Santiago) so I took it as a sign to stop to show a little gratitude and to have a quiet moment to reflect on the past five months of travel.Meer informatie

Aberdeen

Aberdeen is the Granite City, so almost the entire center city is gray. The university is in the Old Aberdeen section, close to where I’m staying, and it has a very different feel to the granite-clad Georgian center. The school dates back to the 1400s. Kings College Chapel was a highlight of the walking tour. Aberdeen sits on the North Sea so there’s a bit of a summer resort feel to it with plenty of sandy beaches. I took a long walk around the city today starting at 8 am and finishing up after lunch. Definitely not my favorite Scottish city, but yesterday’s coastal walk made it worth a visit.Meer informatie

ReizigerNot this time. I’m in Glasgow now. But I do want to go to Orkney so maybe I’ll get there when I come back to Scotland in June.
