    Descending the Pyrenees

    April 27, 2017 in France ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

The tradition, we were told by Adele from Orisson, is that guests at the conclusion of the pilgrims meal stand and announce their name and nationality. So knowing everybody, pilgrims set off this morning for Roncevalles, known as Orreaga in Basque, in small groups all tempted by the promise of a virgin in a field.Read more

    Climbing the Pyrennees

    April 26, 2017 in France ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Tried a local Basque speciality for dinner: Pied de Porc. Seemed like a good idea in St Jean Pied de Port and I love zampetta with lentils. I got exactly what I ordered, a pigs foot- knuckles covered in fat and skin. The "pilgrims menu" at most of the restaurants was chicken and chips.
The bunk above mine was taken by a Korean guy who got up at 0530. The whole ensemble swayed as he descended the ladder. Unfortunately, he then decided to climb back to collect something, which he repeated a few times. Like a good pilgrim I said nothing as I thought he was going early, but he was still at breakfast at 0730. Standard albergue timetable is breakfast 0700-0730 and disappear by 0800.
Short day today, to get run-in. 400m up and 8 kms walking with Carol from Dubbo (75) and daughter who just wanted to do the Camino.
Stayed in the annex which was 1100m down the road from the full, main refuge and restaurant. Although it meant more walking we were away from authority and could light the fire. Also, the road is 400 m above the valley with very steep sides so the vultures or bustards (Gypaetus barbatus or Lammergeir, South African teacher Phil from Auckland tells me) soar alongside you as you amble along.
