      Jolie Bermudes

      29 Mei, Bermuda ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Bermuda Day 3 - Crystal Caves

      21 Jun 2022, Bermuda ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Up super early to go on our excursion to Crystal Caves and Clearwater Beach. Very cool experience. Our driver was fun but drove fast and had no problem rubbing bumpers with narrow street walls.

We got to snorkeling and just chill out in the best weather ever. We took a ferry back across from St. George’s to the Royal Navy Dockyard. That night Kyrie watched Dune and actually liked it. In bed early.Baca lagi

High Tea and a Teal Blue Sea

      12 Jun 2022, Bermuda ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Mel and I are on the child-free trip we have been dreaming of for years (6 years to be precise). We asked a hospitality industry friend about destinations and she recommended Bermuda, and the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, which is why Mel and I are staying at a Fairmont hotel in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Bermuda is a beautiful, interesting island that is a quick 2.5 hour flight from Toronto. Home to the oldest permanently inhabited British settlement in the new world (UNESCO world heritage site St. George) this British territory shares the Queen as Head of State. We learned from the National Museum at the Royal Naval Dockyard the territory’s interesting military history - the women’s regiment deployed with the Canadian Royal Air Force in the Second World War. We also learned about Bermuda’s legacy of slavery where Bermudian’s were enslaved in maritime and military trades for 200 years.

In present day, from a tourists perspective it feels both familiar and unique. Let me explain.

It feels like Maui - modern and expensive (4th highest GDP per capita in the world, $12 minimum wage). Everyone uses USD as Bermuda’s dollar is kept at par; there are almost no all-inclusive resorts; and the vegetation is lush.

It feels Caribbean - the weather is warm, the beaches are stunning and the national drinks are the rum based ‘Swizzle’. and Dark n Stormy. Over 50% of the population are ethnically black, the dwellings are brightly coloured and colonialism is apparent in the architecture.

It feels Canadian (mainly British) - language is English; every hotel has high tea; pubs line Front street, along with Marks and Spencer; and the portion sizes are normal. Apparently 80% of the tourists are American, but there are lots of Canadians and Brits so Bermuda feels western, but not American. The Queen visited the National museum in 2009 to open a mural of Bermudian history that took 3.5 years to complete - it was awesome.

Distinct to Bermuda are the limestone roofs that are built to withstand hurricane winds and collect >80% of the rain water which is required by law. Other laws - no car rentals, 35km/h speed limits throughout, dress code when not at a beach or pool. No Corporate tax brings the business registrants.

High winds bring the sailors. Tomorrow twelve 70’ Clippers arrive at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club a 3 minute walk away. Hamilton is the next stop on their 11 month around the world race. We are going to check them out tomorrow and get a tour. There are boats everywhere we look.

The Fairmont Hamilton Princess is a sprawling ‘pink palace’ that opened in 1885. With super yachts in view of the salt water infinity pool, guests clad in ‘yacht club chic’ attire and $17 USD drinks it is easy to remember we are staying at a 5 star hotel - many of the hotels in Bermuda are (unsurprisingly) 5 star hotels.

So our days are a combination of enjoying the fancy hotel amenities, checking out the history and culture and hitting the beach. We have had issues with the hotel room(s) but they are hopefully resolved. The more time we spend here the more we realize we may not need to go back to Maui. Hawaii is beautiful, but Bermuda seems to have a lot of the same elements located a stone’s throw from home.

It is 10PM now and we just finished a lovely dinner at the Crown and Anchor, a civilized time made possible by the absence of our beautiful children who FaceTimed with us briefly but do not terribly miss us because they have Brendee who is awesome.

      Have an elegant evening,

      Lindsay

Bemuda & passage to Halifax Nova Scotia

      2 Jun, Bermuda ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The pressure is on, Mrs D is on a flight to Halifax landing in the 5th and the weather systems wont play ball. It’s 780 nm as the crow flies but it looks like we will have to Zig and zag to keep the boat going north. To add to that there is a hint of a big system moving up the American coast on day 4 of the 5/6 day trip. Which will run us over and possibly push us past Halifax. Decisions decisions.
We have had a good time in Bermuda. It small with 64000 in habitants. It has what appears to be a 2 tier society ex pats find it difficult to own property or businesses. And are unlikely to afford to retire there due to the very high cost of living and medical insurance. However the climate it perfect with never really cold occasionally too hot. Very green and lush with a solid infrastructure. It is how I imagined the Caribean to be. But it wasn’t.
On day one in Bermuda we did customs and immigration. In St George’s They have their own quaint wooden quay to pull up at. Super polite super helpful. Easiest yet. We then anchored up got the bikes out and cycled up the hill to go round the headland and see the entrance we came through in the dark the night before. On the way up the hill new were called over to help one of the locals take a group photo. After having some banter. The chap told us he was the Minister for Transport and the longest standing member of parliament. And gave us his number. For up dates on our trip.

As We had drawn close to Bermuda My phone had come to life and the Facebook algorithm suggested a friend, from school days who lived in Bermuda. I couldn’t resist I hadn’t seen him since I left school at 16 , so contacted Grant and planned to go out for a beer. Really was a positive thing and good to see him doing well and running a bike shop locally. Would have been rude not to make the effort in such a far from everywhere place.
Next stop was the Pub £10 per pint if you’re lucky. We met Dre and Steve who were delivering a 58ft boat to the Med. Dre is from Canada and is an a pretty extreme skier who run a helicopter ski lodge in the Rockies and Steve and Old school Pro skipper with tons of experience. We had tons in common and the the 10 quid drinks seem to fly by. Thoroughly good company and hope to catch up again.

Set off on Sunday pm after doing all the boat prep work. Engine checks, fill up with fuel and water. Stock up with food. Download charts, and weather. Check all the shackles and line sand rigging again. 3pm we are off. Sails up anchorage up and we manage to sail off the anchor through the crowded anchorage alway makes me smile. Through the town cut and into the open ocean again.
I knew the wind would be in the wrong direction for a while, so as normal we start by beating up wind until it comes right. For the next few days we will be making many re adjustments to the plan depending on the ever changing weather forecast. Day 3 turns out to be motor sailing all day in very light wind but we are hoping for day for blow in the right direction. TBC
