    Faro! Getting the bikes dialed

    May 6 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

I landed in Faro last night with just enough time to grab some dinner with Ari and hit the hay in an attempt to right my sleep schedule. Today we rode around town to make sure the bikes were all set up and feeling good. Faro is very cute and seemingly a walled city, but ill read more about that tonight. The trails around here are good, and the coastal vibe is beautiful! Everything is ready for us to start pedaling tomorrow! Tomorrow we head to Portimão, just west of Faro.Read more

    A Train, a Bus, & a Cliffside Boardwalk

    April 29 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 64 °F

Our day started with a short train ride into the city of Faro. Our plan to take a 2nd train to Lagos was thwarted by a train workers strike. So, after many stops on a bus, we made it to Lagos. After walking to our accommodations and getting checked in, we found the boardwalk that took us along colorful limestone cliffs with breathtaking views of the ocean and the shoreline of eroding cliffs, crashing waves, and so much beauty. The walking was easy, the clouds gave way to warm sunshine, so we just walked and walked. It was divine!Read more

Day 24 Out and About Faro

    April 27 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Taking it easy today..
Was going to take a Bolt ( like an Uber) out however the driver kept getting lost. You can see where he is on the map......

As I was waiting, people started to pass by me with fresh produce. I looked around the corner to see a huge farmers market.

I ditched the Bolt and went to the market. Such fun
The people are so kind and generous with their offerings. I always wanted small amounts of items and they kept filling my bags up.....needless to say I will leave what I can't eat in the free bin👍

The sweet potato I got tasted great. It had a purple skin. The veggies were garden fresh all ready for a soup but I made stir-fry . Delicious with fresh strawberries for dessert.

I did have one problem today....cramping of my feet. I think it was due to dehydration from yesterday. I didn't have any electrolytes and this nice guy gave me some fresh market cucumbers that are supposed to help....I had missed 2 days of my Calcium Nd Magnesium so that wasn't good either. Anyway I went to the Farmacia and got some powdered electrolytes and I am good to go

Moved to a 10 bed mixed dorm for tonight. Seville tomorrow.....so excited!!!

    Sauntering on A Country Road

    April 26 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We took a lovely walk from town into the countryside - winding along the river, through fields of orange trees, down quiet country roads redolent with the sweet scent of wildflowers and the music of birdsong. It was a delight.Read more

    Celebrating a Peaceful Revolution

    April 25 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Our day out began by coming upon a Carnation Revolution celebration in the little town of Tavira in southern Portugal, where we are staying for a few days. Today, April 25th, is the 51st anniversary of The Carnation Revolution, also known as the Portuguese Revolution of 1974, signaling the end of the authoritarian Estado Novo regime and the dawn of a new era of democracy. On April 25th, 1974, the country witnessed a peaceful military coup, initiating profound social, political, and cultural changes.

Southern Portugal, with its sandy beaches on the Atlantic and mild and sunny weather, is called the Algarve. It is known around the world for its spectacular coastline. The Algarve is home to Ria Formosa Natural Park, a stunning coastal lagoon with an intricate network of channels, marshes, salt pans, sandbanks, and barrier islands, all teeming with diverse wildlife. We took a ferry to one of its barrier islands, where we enjoyed a kicked back afternoon on a sandy beach. The ocean was cold, but, hey, how often am I near an ocean on a gentle sunny day? I had to take a swim. It was divine!

Next stop on our journey: Portugal!

    April 24 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The first leg of our trip ended and we embarked on the next part of our adventure.

This time our destination is Portugal!
We will spend 5 weeks all up in Portugal, starting with 7 days in Faro.

We took the local train down from Kiel to the airport in Hamburg and arrived with 5 minutes to spare at the airport to drop our bags off after being delayed due to signal issues on the train line by about 1.5 hours...🚉

    Love the Deutsche Bahn...

When we got to Faro, we decided to walk from the airport to our hotel which was only 6km so not the worst 🚶🏼‍♀️

We ended up having an amazing dinner at a local sandwich place (Ponto expresso) and went to bed 🛏️

The next day, we got up early and started exploring Faro and it's surroundings. The 25th April is freedom day so the streets of Faro were very empty in the morning.

After a little stroll around the city, we found a nice little coffee shop (yellow bourbon) where we ordered a drip coffee. To our surprise, we had to make the coffee ourselves - which was a super cool experience!

After breakfast and coffee, we decided to walk out to a nearby beach. And so we spend the day walking from Faro to Montenegro (not the country hehe) and further down to Praia de Faro Este and back. All up a 21km walk which took us through some cool parts of the Algarve!

So far, we like the small streets with sun covers and the random pieces of art that pop up everywhere in the city 🏙️ 🌆

We are excited for the days to come. 🥳🎊🎉

    Day 21 Lisbon to Faro

    April 24 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Left Lisbon at 10 am by train. Easy taking the metro to the train station. The train was packed!!

I sat next to a lovely young lady Lauren, from London travelling with her folks who live in Chicago.

    Super hot in Faro.

The hostel is great except for a shared Bathroom and Shower?? I plan to shower super early tomorrow that is my plan. Not really liking this part ....

I don't usually book any tours however seeing dolphins really appealed to me so I am going tomorrow!!! I can't wait.

    I also booked a Cave tour/ hike for Saturday😉

Faro is very close to Lagos .... I would love to go there but there just isn't enough time. Next time,?? Hmmmmm😉

    FARO

    May 6 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    Day trip to Tavira

    April 26 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We did a bit of research as to what to do in the area and google suggested a trip to Tavira.

So off we went with the train to this little township to the East of Faro. The ride itself is only 40 minutes but the trains are quite temperamental and don't really show up as scheduled. Since there is no board showing when the train would show up, it's all about being patient and waiting at the platform. We got lucky I guess and both trains only arrived 15 minutes late 😎😁

The train goes along the waterfront which is a beautiful view both ways.

Once we got to Tavira, we explored the little town and had a really good flat white/ latte. The first one in a while!

After a whole day of exploring, we took the train back to Faro.

This little place is really quaint and worth a visit! 🤗😊🌞

    Drifting too far from shore

    April 25 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 68 °F

Our train from Lisbon to Tavira seemed long and like we were going to a very far away place. We got off unbeknownst to us, at a station at the edge of town and started our walk to our reserved lodging at Tavira House. The streets seemed lonely and we wondered if this place was a good choice.

Suddenly we were upon the address and the inconspicuous door for the Guest House. From this collection of photos you can see that behind the door was a most delightful surprise. The Tavira House is a gem… some sort of a unique collection of beautiful furniture, decorating and art from another time.

So here is my collection of photos plus others from
    Yesterday in Tavira.

PS. This still feels possibly too far away for me.
