    Skiing the Alps

    March 18 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 36 °F

At the Seegrube station, they had a small hill where you could ride various tabagons down the hill. They even had a little escalator that took you and your sled up the hill. It was so much fun. Brian tried a ski-bike with no steering...it did not go well. Then he tried a ski-bike with handlebars. That ride went much better.
I tried the ski-bike, too, and a small tabagon. We had so much fun! And now we can say that we skied on the Alps!

    Monday's meals

    March 17 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 34 °F

Brian and I are such foodies when we travel. We love to experience new foods from the area we are visiting. Today, we had some unusual meals.
The breakfast offered at our hotel was good (but not the bounty of the Seehof Hotel from yesterday).
After our walk to Hall in Tirol, we were hungry, but we didn't want to lose a lot of time in our day. There are a lot of Turkish immigrants in Austria, and therefore, there are many Kebap restaurants. We have seen people walking around with these huge flat bread sandwiches, and today was the day we tried one. They were incredible. It's messy but really tasty.
Once we got to Innsbruck, we saw that a cafe had outdoor seating. However, since it's so cold, they have fur-lined chairs and blankets you can wrap up in while you drink your beverages. We had to try it! It was so fun to sip our drinks all wrapped up!
After our daring climb to the top of the city tower, we treated ourselves to frozen yogurt ( from Tyrolean cows, of course). Pistachios, strawberries, and blueberries were our toppings. We really needed the blankets here. This yogurt was so creamy and delicious, but considering it was 40 degrees Farenheit, it was not a logical decision.

    Innsbruck city tower

    March 17 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 34 °F

This was our moment of spontaneity. We looked up and saw that people were standing on a walkway near the pinnacle of the city tower. We knew nothing about this but decided to check it out. We paid our 3 Euros and were escorted to the entrance...which was 133 spiral steps up to the top...no elevator...and they closed in 15 minutes!
Up and up we went. It was worth every step: the views of the city were breathtaking! The Alps in the background just make us feel like we are in a dream. We can't believe we're are really here!
Fun fact: this tower was constructed in 1450. I tried not to think about how old it was when we were at the top.

    Innsbruck

    March 17 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

We took the bus from Hall in Tirol to Innsbruck. (The name means Inn River).
We watched a lot of travel videos about this city, so our expectations were high. It did not disappoint.
We began by viewing the triumph arch that was built to commemorate the wedding of Austrian King Leopold and his Italian bride in 1765. When a bus drives through this arch, there are only inches to spare on each side! Scary!
Then we walked down the famous Maria Theresa Street and enjoyed all the beautiful architecture.
The highlight of this street comes at the end when you get to see the golden roof. It was made in 1497 to honor the Emperor 's wedding. The roof is gold plating over copper. So beautiful.

    March 29 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

Read more

    7400 Feet

    March 18 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 36 °F

We made it to the top!
The last station is Hafalekar, and it sits at 7,400 ft! It was amazing to actually be looking down at the clouds. It was still very icy, and we decided not to walk to the very highest pinnacle. Actually, we negotiated this point because one of us really wanted to try it, but one of us thought it was too risky. I will let you guess which thought is Brian's and which one is mine.Read more

    Sun and snow in Seegrube

    March 18 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 36 °F

After taking in the beautiful views at the Hungerberg station, we changed to a cable car for the rest of the trip. This kind of ride terrifies me, but I really wanted to stand at the top of the Alps...so it was onward and upward. I am so glad I pushed through. It was amazing at the Seegrube station (6250 ft). They have Sun chairs on the edge of the mountain where you can relax and watch skiers and snow boarders.
We just couldn't get enough of the gorgeous views. There is a restaurant there, too, so you know Brian and I had to try that! We ate soup and I had water infused with edelweiss. (Do you have the Sound of Music song stuck in your head now?)

    FUN-icular

    March 18 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 36 °F

After breakfast, we checked out of our hotel, and took the bus into Innsbruck. We headed for the Nordkette attracrion. This is a 4 stage ride up to the top of one of the Nordkette mountains. The first part of the ride is in a car called a funicular. It takes you up about 2,800 ft and is guided by tracks on the ground. The views were so beautiful today. It's our first sunny day since we arrived in Bavaria, and we were so happy to be spending it climbing the mountain.Read more

    Hof Garden Innsbruck

    March 17 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 34 °F

Amid the bustling city, we took time to walk in the nearby Hof Gardens. It was warmer here the weeks before we arrived, and the grass and flowers are beginning to grow. It was a nice respite from the busy city streets.Read more
