George Town to Plum Creek Eleuthera

    May 2 on the Bahamas ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

After brewing a pot of coffee, we pulled anchor at 6:30am and were on our way..
We were able to turn the motors off at 6:48
A couple hours in, we realized the repaired block didn't hold. JB Weld is good but not that good. Fortunately, Dave had asked John to bring a new block with him. So, we dropped the main a bit and Dave installed the new block that John brought. Dave's getting very good and making repairs underway.
For the first five hours we were able to turn the motors off and travel entirely under sail
About 10:30am, "Fish on!". Dave and John reeled in a beautiful bull mahi mahi. Dave filleted the fish and we knew what was for dinner!
For the most part the wind direction was
perfect. We were enjoying not having our motors on but there came a time about 1pm that in order to keep sailing without the motor, we would have to head away from our destination. If we did that, we wouldn't arrive at our anchorage until after dark. With the unknown area, shallow waters and coral reefs, we certainly didn't want to do that. So, we turned on the "iron lung" to keep sailing in the proper direction.
Overall, over our 12+ hour day, we were able to turn the motors off for about 8 hours. Not too shabby.
We arrived at our Plum Creek anchorage about 7pm. We had plenty of time to get the anchor down and enjoy the sunset. We had the anchorage to ourselves! This was our first sail with John and Lena and all went really well.
Lena baked some more ciabatta bread while Dave prepped the mahi mahi. We sat down for a great dinner of mahi mahi,
salad, beans/rice and ciabatta bread about 9pm. We had some great conversation over dinner. I'm enjoying getting to know so many different people in the sailing community and hear what their journey is.
We were all exhausted after the long day so after the dishes were done shortly after 10pm, we were all in bed. Tomorrow we'll make our way to Meeks Patch Anchorage in Eulethera. We plan to set out about 7am.

    Eleuthera!

    May 5 on the Bahamas ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Today was our first real travel day on the boat, we left Great Exuma and traveled 80 miles due North to Davis Harbor in Eleuthera. Most of the trip was in water 5000-6000 feet deep, not much to see along the route, but we saw flying fish!

A long delay this morning (and afternoon) because we were waiting for a package, so we didn't get underway until after 2pm. We anchored at about 7:30 and watched the sun set, and cooked some dinner Tomorrow we'll have to get an early start so we can enjoy more of the day.

    Princess Cay

    March 22 on the Bahamas ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    Beach day!!
First time in Princess Cay and first time snorkeling in the Carribean.

It was a bit on the cooler side for me, but sunny and not much of a breeze so tolerable for sure. The temp was about 21c for the day. I walked around a bit before settling on an area with some rocks dividing parts of the beach as I had brought my own face mask. There were so many tropical fish in amongst the rocks it was like sticking ones face into a tropical aquarium! A very good experience overall.

I went back to the boat a bit early as I don't like to rush and I dread being one of those pier runners that end up on social media. We did have one who missed the last shuttle boat and left us delayed a bit while waiting for him to be brought back.

All in all it was a great day.

Perfect Day at Half Moon Cay!!

    March 4, 2024 on the Bahamas ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Spent the day at Half Moon Cay where we ate some really good bbq and went snorkeling along with some other water adventures! The rest of the day was spent tanning, reading, and relaxing!!! Shout out to the random staff member who gave us a surprise island tour on a golf cart. However that meant we almost missed the boat. Humbling to be the last ones on.Read more

    January 4, 2024 on the Bahamas ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Unfortunately due to rough seas my snorkel by boat was cancelled, so just went ashore and paddled in the Cay.

Then made my way back to boat for lunch and spent some time in the spa, for a very relaxing afternoon.Read more

    BB King Blues Club

    December 28, 2023 on the Bahamas ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

One of the great things about a Holland America Cruise has to be the BB King Blues Club and tonight was no exception. The band was smokin’.

Unfortunately this was their last cruise and the location was rebranded to The Rolling Stone Lounge and a new band boarded on our Fort Lauderdale stop, they were awful. 😣 Apparently they hadn’t rehearsed together before joining the cruise and it showed.Read more

    Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

    December 28, 2023 on the Bahamas ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

First stop on the cruise is a private island owned by Holland America, we were lucky enough to be the only cruise ship using it.

Went on a stingray tour which was amazing, the water was freezing but was worth it to have stingrays swim between your legs and to actually get to pet and kiss a baby one and also hold other various see life.

Afterwards I had a clamshell on the beach where I got lunch delivered to, was a lovely lobster roll.

    Princess Cay Day

    November 1, 2023 on the Bahamas ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Jenny and Paul got an early shuttle be ause they had rented a clamshell. It took awhile for Taylor and me to get a tender to get to the island. Not sure what the issues were to get us cleared. Spent a terrific 3.5 hours on this clear warm water beach. Loved it!

After returning to the ship, we showered, Taylor tried to nap, and I headed to have a cocktail while she got ready. I took my Starry night scarf and made it a skirt and woke my matching shoes. S Definitely less of a party demographic on this ship. Mellower people in my age category. The restaurants have been terrific. We saw a tribute to Madonna which started off a but corny but ended up being really good.

    Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

    October 21, 2023 on the Bahamas ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After nine days across the Atlantic Ocean enjoying various activities, lectures, and shows, we finally arrived at Half Moon Cay! It used to be known as Little San Salvador and is a private island reserved for the exclusive use of Carnival, who owns Holland America. No one lives on the island, so staff from a nearby island and the ship are busy providing for the guests.

Up fairly early we decided to enjoy a coffee at the Dutch Cafe onboard. This is a tender port, so the ship drops anchors and the tenders shuttle folks to land. The water is the stunning blues and greens listed on the travel brochures!

Though the past week was impressively smooth on the ship, it felt great to be on land once again. We enjoyed a short walk before our excursion we booked due to the cancelled Azores port. It was a very warm morning (late 20s), and slightly overcast, with a few rain drops. The skies quickly cleared into sun and fluffy little clouds.

We met up with our new friends, and M was lucky enough to be able to join our earlier 10am group. Jet Skis! Combining 30mph, with fresh air and perfect weather is a great recipe for fun! We darted through the lagoon and out along the beach. We guessed they were speed governed as they did go faster then 32 mph. We diligently followed the guide in single file formation around the various buoys and shallow waters in the lagoon. The jet skis were a hoot, but definitely not as responsive as a motorcycle though they float much better than one! The freedom of no helmet was liberating.

We headed to the beach to enjoy a swim in the shallow clear water of the Caribbean: the sand was amazing, so fine and flour-like. D decided to head back to the ship with M&T, and we went to the BBQ pit for lunch. They setup a delicious spread, and not easy considering they had to pack most of it over from the vessel. The "all aboard" time was 2:30pm, so we headed back to the ferry after lunch to avoid the passenger rush.

That evening our meal in the dining room was noticeably louder than previous nights. Located on deck 2, above the two propellers, this evening's 18knt speed to get to Fort Lauderdale wasn't the quiet hum of the transatlantic 16knts 🙃

    Lighthouse Point

    October 16, 2023 on the Bahamas ⋅ 🌬 82 °F

At the southern tip of Eleuthera, there is a beautiful beach ⛱️ that may soon be ruined by a Disney cruise port being built. You already have to park and walk two miles to reach the tip. It's called Lighthouse Point, but while there is a navigation light and a house, I wouldn't really call it a Lighthouse. Even though the weather was windy and overcast, the walk to the point was protected, and the sea was quite calm. Unfortunately, with the wind, there was not a lot of swimming.
We did not make it home before dark, so the last hour of driving was quite stressful.
