    Liege

    A very very wet day. Followed the Meuse cycle path over the undefined border into Belgium and onwards. Dinnat was pretty cool and apparently where Alberto Sax- of saxophone fame- is from: who said there are no famous Belgians? The valley became more gorge like with limestone cliffs , and the occasional chateau- but it was really too wet to notice- or even care -after a while. Found a great cycling cafe for lunch at the bottom of the Mur de Huy- at 19% I'll leave that for another day. Reluctant to get back on the bike into the persistent rain- and justified as the path deteriorated in and out of industrial complexes and back streets all the way to Liege. Whilst rushing to get to a bike shop before it closed an 80 year old tripped up over a kerb and tangled himself up in my bike , breaking his hip in the process!! After we sorted all that out( impressive ambulance response times here) I found my warm showers host, Mark and had a lovely evening talking about Tibet, Trappist beers and Marillion!Read more

    Lüttich

    In Deutschland ist heute Feiertag, in Belgien zum Glück nicht. Wir fahren heute nach Lüttich und besuchen zunächst den dortigen IKEA. Köttbullar heißen dort "schwedische Bouletten" und werden natürlich mit Fritten serviert statt mit Kartoffelpü. Schmecken tun sie aber gleich. Nach dem leckeren Frühstück fahren wir rein in die Stadt. Das Wetter hält und so können wir unbeschwert durch die Fußgängerzone schlendern. Das Bild von Verviers setzt sich hier fort. Viel Shabby Chic, Baufälligkeit und altertümliche Verkehrsplanung. Hier merkt man, wie verwöhnt man eigentlich von zuhause ist.
    Abends die obligatorische Tischtennisrunde - wir haben uns ja noch nicht genug bewegt - und schon ist der Tag wieder rum.    Read more

    Selys encuentro in Belgium

    We started our trip by landing in Frankfurt airport. Our original plan was to rent a car and drive 3 hours to Liège in Belgium, the home for the encuentro, with a stop in Bonn for a VoiceMap tour about Beethoven, and a visit to Beethoven house museum. Unfortunately, given that our flight departed at 5 pm, we couldn’t really fall asleep that early and ended up landing having only slept for a couple of hours. We decided that driving after a sleepless night wasn’t the best choice, plus we’re too tired for a pleasant sightseeing. So we scratched the plan and instead ran to the train station to make a direct train to Liège. We just made the train with 2 minutes to spare, and 2.5 hrs later, we arrived to Liège. It’s one of the top 4 largest cities in Belgium with beautiful modern architecture, as evidenced by the stunning train station building. We then went to the hotel, rested and got ready for the first milonga of the Selys encuentro, which took place in a stunning historical ballroom in the older wing of the hotel. The next four days, until Monday morning, we did not leave the hotel, fully immersed in dancing. We danced, ate tasty meals and slept very little. We had 31 hours of dancing, and I enjoyed 83 magical tandas (which is about 17 hours of pure dancing) with great dancers, the most I ever danced in a single event. It was warm and friendly with a very high level of dancers, probably the best encuentro for us that we ever attended.Read more

    Liège

    Départ de notre voyage au Pays-Bas et premier arrêt à Liège. Nous sommes arrivés à 17h après un voyage à la circulation dense en France et au Luxembourg. Nous avons récupéré notre chambre dans un hôtel très sympa en plein coeur du vieux Liège. Une chambre très bien avec salle de bain ouverte pratique !!! 😂
    Puis nous sommes partis découvrir la ville. Des petites rues piétonnes, des petites boutiques, un palais ... Rien de bien fou pour ce premier tour du centre ville.
    Puis nous sommes allés dans un petit bar/restaurant/tapas (Fondamental) avec son petit patio sous les arbres au menu fromage belge, salaisons locales (comme ils disent ici) et petites croquettes variées. Le tout arrosé par une bonne bière belge ou deux ou ... !!! 🍻
    Et bien-sûr l'incontournable gaufre liégeoise qui nous aura un peu déçu. Même si elle venait de la meilleure boutique de la ville.
    Puis retour à l'hôtel et dodo nous sommes très fatigués ! 😴    Read more

    Entlang der Maas

    Obwohl die Maas durch ein ähnliches topografisches Gebiet fließt wie die Mosel ist sie doch ganz anders besiedelt. Ich brauche über 20 km um aus einem industriegebiet herauszukommen dass aus verfallener Schwertindustrie zu Gewerbegebieten und Logistikzentren gewandelt ist.
    Aber ich möchte auch eine Lanze brechen: Der Fahrradweg ist hervorragend ausgebaut und ausgeschildert Es es ist sehr leicht den vielen Pfeilen zu folgen und ich fahre vollkommen entspannt, nach dem Chaos das ich gestern in Deutschland erlebt hatte.    Read more

    Zwischenstopp in Lüttich/ Belgien

    Angekommen in Lüttich nach 6 h 45 Minuten. Die Fahrt war gut ohne Vorkommnisse. Ein wenig die Füsse vertreten und zu Abendessen. Die Kathedrale hätte ich gerne von innen gesehen, aber sie schloss schon 17 Uhr. Daher genossen wir das heimische Bier.

    Aber warum machen wir uns auf den Weg in die Normandie?

    Im letzten Jahr waren wir bereits dort. Wir hatten viel gesehen, aber doch nicht alles geschafft. Einiges war noch offen, wie zum Beispiel Omaha Beach und eine Bunkeranlage, um den Blick der Deutschen auf die Strände zu sehen, um sich irgendwie vorzustellen was vor 80. Jahren am 6. Juni 1944 passiert ist.

    Im Nachgang des letzten Urlaubes sagte Micha: nächstes Jahr sind es 80. Jahre her, da wird bestimmt viel los sein, da wäre ich gern dabei...

    Daraufhin sagte ich, dann lass uns doch einfach hinfahren. So entstand aus einer Schnapsidee unser Urlaub. Das Leben ist auch zu kurz, um Dinge aufzuschieben.

    So sind wir nun auf dem Weg und sehr aufgeregt.
    Viele Veteranen werden vor Ort sein. Der Schauspieler Damian Lewis, der Major Dick Winters aus der Serie Band of Brothers gespielt hat, in der die Geschichte der Easy Company, 2. Bataillon des 506. Infanterieregiments der 101. Airbornedivision vorgestellt wurde. Dieser tritt mit seiner Band in Saint Mere Eglise auf.

    Es gibt unzählige Veranstaltungen. Sehr schwierig alles zu überschauen, vor allem ohne französisch Kenntnisse.

    Wir werden versuchen, so viel wie möglich mitzunehmen, sei es die Nachstellung der Landung, Konzerte. Ausstellungen.
    Omaha Beach und nochmal der amerikanische Friedhof, wobei das wahrscheinlich schwierig werden könnte, da sehr viele Politiker u.a. der amerikanische Präsident Biden und Macron kommen werden.

    Hotel Altitude

    Endnu en regnvejrsdag, så derfor kører vi en del. Og faktisk en del på motorvej/motortrafikveje.
    Vi startede dagen med at katten hos vores vært, havde tisset på Sørens sko. 😱 Det stinker!!!
    Turen gik til Liége, på vejen ind til byen så vi nærmest kun store faldefærdige fabrikker. Så glæden var stor da vi kom til broen ind mod centrum.
    Det regnede stadig så vi fik et par timer til at gå i et indkøbscenter.
    Derfra kørte vi faktisk tilbage til Holland, til Maastricht. Sikke en flot by. Den store plads er her hvor André Rieu holder koncerter.
    Tilbage til Belgien.... Forbi Circuit Spa, Europas smukkeste racerbane, med plads til 70000 tilskuere.
    Nu drikker vi øl på Hotel Altitude.    Read more

    Jacuzzi party

    We zijn vroeg opgestaan om naar de grootste rommelmarkt van België te gaan in Luik. Hier zijn veel vintage en antieke spullen te vinden dus raden ze aan om zo vroeg mogelijk te komen. Eenmaal daar is het en slecht weer en er zijn welgeteld 3 particuliere kraampjes en voor de rest alleen maar winkels. Helaas, maar gelukkig heeft Malou een pistool kunnen kopen en heeft Elize haar favoriete koekjes kunnen vinden.

    Hierna vinden wij dat we het hebben verdient om een nachtje in een AirBnB met Jacuzzi door te brengen!    Read more

    Playboi carti in belgium

    Our itinerary for carti was:
    22 hrs bus, arrive at liege at 10am, look around the city during the day, get to the festival in the evening, have a nap under a tree until 8am, then take a bunch of trains to get home by 6pm.

    Up until the trains everything went to plan. The bus was super uncomfortable and long, both of us got a tummy bug for some reason, which made it really miserable.
    Liege was really nice! We got Belgian waffles for lunch which were delicious and then chilled out the front of a supermarket for pres. The supermarket was chock full of festival goers buying drinks and having their pres too, so it was actually really fun. I'd had a terrible tummy ache all morning but it miraculously got better after my first sip of beer! There were so many people at the festival, more than I think I've ever seen anywhere. The carti show was amazing too, so much energy, it was probs the best live show I've seen :)). The mosh was so hot that afterwards we were dripping wet with sweat (it was like wed jumped into a pool with our clothes on), which meant we had to sleep in wet clothes ew. We found a park to sleep in and stayed from like 2 till 6, surprisingly, I slept till about 5 so it really wasn't that bad! Then everything got messed up. Google maps isn't as accurate with these trains as it has been with everything else, so we ended up getting on the wrong train. This meant we were going to miss every other train that we'd booked, we were 2hrs behind. I managed to fix it though, we had to sneaking onto trains and act confused for the ticket checkers but it was looking like we were still going to get to warsaw by 11pm. Then our second last train took 2hrs longer than expected so we missed the last train to warsaw. This meant we had to buy last minute bus tickets, wait in Berlin until 1130, and then endure another extremely uncomfortable 8hrs on a bus. We got back home at 8am.

    Carti was awesome but nothing is worth the amount of effort and discomfort we had to go through. Were both sick now because we haven't slept or eaten properly in 3 days.    Read more
