Auf nach Niewport in Flandern

Bevor ich im Camperpark von De Zwergen in Niewport ankam, musste der 6,6 km lange Tunnel (unter Wasser) bewältigt werden, meiner Phobie zum Trotz. Auf der Flandernseite teilten sich Golfplätze und Nudistenstrände die atlantische Küstenstrasse N34. In Den Haan traf ich eine schottisches Womopaar mit ihrem 5j Spaniel und Bongo spielte mit ihm ausgiebig am breiten Sandstrand, wir redeten eine gute Stunde zusammen. Die aus Everness kommende Paar waren auf dem Weg nach Luxemburg bzw Deutschland die sie zuvor noch nie besucht haben. Frankreich haben sie bereits mehrmals bereist.Leggi altro

Toujours pas d'hébergement à 19h30 ! Dans la ville d'Aartrijk, un passant m'indique qu'il y a un camping...que je ne trouve pas. En fait, il s'agit d'un glampinghttps://glamping.fr/quest-ce-que-le-glamping/
Une rencontre avec un couple qui lave sa voiture va résoudre mon petit problème.

Rappel : le camping sauvage est strictement interdit en Belgique :
"Le camping sauvage est interdit en Belgique, car il est considéré comme une activité illégale. Les autorités belges encouragent les visiteurs à réserver des sites de camping officiels ou des aires de camping. Les campeurs qui pratiquent le camping sauvage peuvent être accusés de braconnage et poursuivis en justice"

Ce couple très sympathique à donné quelques coups de fil et m'a trouvé un super plan B. Plan B, parce que le plan A, c'était des hébergements en warmshower qui n'ont rien donné 🥲
Je suis donc arrivé au domaine de Merkenveld près de Zedelgem. Dédié essentiellement aux scouts, Sonja m'a permis de passer la nuit sur le site : en échange d'une somme modique, j'ai eu droit de planter la tente, prendre une douche et prendre un bon repas chaud. Merciiii à toute l'équipe. Et bonne continuation 🥰

What a night! Sting bij Nieuwpoort Beach Festival. Met ons drieën gedanst, gesprongen en meegezongen (gebruld 😁) bij het optreden van Sting. En jemig, wat is die man fit voor zijn leeftijd!
Daarna los gegaan bij de afterparty. Vervolgens terug naar de boot op onze stepjes. Dat was met aangeschoten Arnold nog een hele belevenis. Blij dat we heel zijn thuisgekomen (lees: blij dat ook Arnold deze rit kan navertellen 😂). Al met al een heerlijke avond gehad.Leggi altro

Na een overnachting in België bij Joost en Cindy zijn we weer terug in Nederland.
Hier staan we nog 1 nachtje op een camping in Voorthuizen bij Patrick en Marieke voor dat we morgen doorrijden naar huis..

Day 2 of Battlefields tour.

Photos - 1 and 2- after attending a short rememberance ceremony at the Menin Gates we had dinner with our guide at a really nice hotel in Ypres, Belgium called the Depot. Volunteers conduct this service which includes playing the last post at 8pm 365 nights a year in appreciation of all those who served - an incredible comittment

Photo 5 - remains of caterpillar mine crater - one of a series of mines that were placed along the German front line by tunnelling

Day 45
The tour of The Catacombs in Paris is approximately 2 km long and deep underground. It contains the bones of over 6 million people. There's 140 steps to go down and 112 to get out. The height dips to 5' 11" in some places. It's a bit freaky down there quite macabre and a bit eerie. Thankfully reasonably well lit !!

Day 42 was meant to be utopia for John who found a sports bar to watch the rugby league grand final live. He then went to the Prix de l'arc de Triomphe (Melbourne Cup of Europe). At least the races part was good !!

The site of the current cemetery was until the Third Battle of Ypres in no man’s land. On July 31, 1917, the 15th (Scottish) Division captured the Lost Corner and Freiberg with the 55th (West Lancashire) Division on their left flank. The cemetery was started the next month by the 15th and 16th (Irish) Division, under the name ‘New Cemetery, Frezenberg’. A few weeks later, however, a British plane crashed near the current ‘Cross of Sacrifice’, which earned the cemetery its current name, Aeroplane Cemetery. The cemetery was used by combat units until March 1918.

The cemetery includes the graves of 15 men who served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

Plots II to VIII, and part of Plot I, were formed after the Armistice when graves were brought in from small burial grounds and the surrounding battlefields. There are now 1,105 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. 636 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate eight casualties known or believed to be buried among them.Leggi altro
