    Brussels to Brugge

    April 18 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

We took the train to Brugge today. Our lovely host, Catherine, picked us up from the station and drove us to her Airbnb. It is a beautiful 3 story home on the canal. We walked to the oldest pub in Brugge ( over 500 yrs) and had a quick bite. We then walked to the main Market Square and started a self-guided tour around the beautiful center. Brugge means bridge and there are many!! It dates back to 840-875. The building and facades are very old & charming. We met Shaun & Tom for dinner and tried more Belgian beers. We then walked to the old windmills on the canal then back to the Airbnb to greet Joanne & Andrew.Read more

    Bruges (Round 2)

    April 7 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

The first time I visited Bruges I was sick, so trying it again :P Finally got to have a beer in Bruges! (And took a pic of the famous Beer Wall -- or at least part of it lol.) The pic where I'm creeping from below is the canal that was originally part of the city's moat. The building with the little gold ball on top is Bruges' oldest house.Read more

    Bruges (Part 1)

    December 12, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Took the train from Amsterdam. What a journey, cancelled and delayed trains, changes of platform at short notice. A short journey turned into 7 hours. That's travelling I guess 😬. The rewards though, Bruges, what an amazing place, it certainly didn't disappoint. Christmas markets, quirky bars, lots of culture, chocolates and beer! ❤️Read more

    Ive arrived in Bruges!!! 🇧🇪

    November 9, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Caught my first french high-speed train today and then headed to the lovely medieval town that is Bruges. I came here because of that one movie and so far I'm feeling both characters opinions on the town. The Belfrey was extremely loud and Belgian beer deserves the hype. More to come tomorrow!Read more

    Blankenberge- Rouen

    September 29, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

A little bit of a sleep in. On the road by 9.30 into Bruge city. No traffic on a Sunday! The centre of Bruge is beautiful. Not 1 but 3 beautiful cathedrals to see. The cobbled streets have gorgeous old buildings.
Back on the road at 11.30. Drove through some very scenic farmland.
Our first stop was Franvillers to place a poppy at a grave in the cemetery. If you want to know the story, ask me when I get home. It was quite emotional. Next we went to Villers-Bretonneux War Cemetery. The connection is through Jacko's grandmother. Once again ask about it when we get home. We placed another poppy there. Mum would be proud to know that two of the poppies she knitted have found a home on the Somme. It is an amazing place. There are bullet holes from the Germans in WW2. Another emotional encounter. We checked in to our Rouen accommodation at 6 and had a relaxing evening.

    Bruges

    July 29, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Train ride from Luxembourg was 4 hours, connecting through brussels but missed my connection. Fortunately there was another connection 20 minutes later to Bruges, arriving at 3pm.

On arrival, Charlie greeted me at the train station and off we went into the old town of Bruges. What a fantastic place to wander aimlessly with all its beautiful old buildings, quaint streets and canals. "Venice of the north".

Charlie and i stopped at a small beer place where we met lovely sofie and oliver from denmark. Chatted with them for about an hour and then made our way to the main plaza, which is just spectacular. Had some snacks there until Mike found us and took us to a really nice interior courtyard place for some beers. Followed by another Mike hand picked spot for supper where i ate an awesome fish stew. And one more spot chosen by mike for late evening beverages before he had to train back to Ghent.

Charlie and i then drove to his house a block from the seaside in blankenberge. Walked the beach enough to dip our toes in the ocean and then found a nice beachside place for a beverage before heading back to Charlie's apartment to cap the night.

    IN Bruges 🇧🇪

    June 27, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

4 days in Bruges!! Cute little city but busy with tourists! We were lucky to have good weather the day we arrived & our full first & second day, giving us the chance to explore the town & all its beauty - even managed to get out to Dunkirk on our last day! Even though there wasn't much at all in dunkirk I enjoyed my time there ( literally no shops in the town were open - it was an actual ghost town )

Such a beautiful city, would love to come back during the Christmas season I think it would actually be magical 🤩

  • Day 12

    Brugges, Belgium

    June 24, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

A Medieval city. Waffles. Beer. Frites. Beautiful flowers. Amazing weather. We are charmed by this beautiful city in Belgium.

Brugge, often called the "Venice of the North," is a picturesque city in Belgium known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and charming canals. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting visitors with its historic landmarks like the Belfry of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The city's rich history and vibrant cultural scene make it a popular destination for tourists worldwide.

After an excellent tour with our local guide, Frank, and a wonderful canal cruise, we took a couple of hours on our own, starting with a lovely lunch at a canal-side cafe that consisted of blonde Leffe beer, Flemish stew, waffle, and frites. It was wonderful! Then, we walked the city, where we found a veneration service in progress at the Basilica of the Holy Blood. What a treat to attend this beautiful service! After that, we toured the huge and ornate Church of Our Lady where you can find beautiful art pieces, including one by Michaelangelo.

Finally, we visited a third generation chocolate shop to select our Belgian chocolates before leaving. I’m happy to report that the chocolate, beer and waffles are as excellent as advertised! Barbara Traversino, if you’re nice to me, I might have a surprise chocolate praline box for you. If I get peckish, however, all bets are off! 🙂

Put Brugge, Belgium, on your list! 🇧🇪

    Bruges/Brugge

    September 28, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Will probably post more of Bruges tomorrow, but here's a few from my wanderings after I arrived. The one overlooking the market square is from my room 😍, and my hotel is in the middle of the row of green awnings. (The little food stall in front of the tower is where I had my extremely healthy dinner of fries slathered in sauce.) And yes...I found another door.Read more

  • Day 3

    Sweet Sweet Bruges

    September 3, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today started with an all you can eat breakfast I thought was included in the price of our room. While just starting to feast on the huge selection of food and drink offerings I was asked my room number. After looking it up, I told was that we hadn’t paid for the optional breakfast. No way was I going to back out now. Too hungry! I didn’t even ask the price. When Laura came down soon after I told her what had happened. She also saw what was being offered and decided to go for it anyways as well. We indulged as much as we could in the litany of choices. The pleasure didn’t come cheap. But, sometimes in life that just doesn’t matter.

We spent the rest of the morning touring the town on foot using a free app that has a variety of walking routes featuring the city’s highlights. We chose one that is about 5 km long and guides you to the city’s most impressive historical buildings and features, many dating back as much as eight centuries! The stops of interest all included a short written description to give you insightful information.

Around noon we headed back to our hotel, grabbing some food at a grocery enroute to make ourselves a lunch. Laura searched out a bike rental place nearby and, after our lunch break, we walked there to see if they had a bike for each of us to use. They did, and it only cost us about $30 for both bikes. And we could keep them until closing at 7 pm.

With the bikes we headed to Damme, about 6 km away. We followed along a beautiful, flat, paved and shaded path to get there. Once there we parked the bikes and walked around to see this historic little town. Before heading back on our bikes we found a table for two at an outdoor cafe and relaxed and had a cold beverage while watching the world go by.

Near our hotel is a Chinese restaurant with a menu posted outside. Already yesterday I had noticed that they serve my favourite Indonesian bami and nasi dishes. Laura was interested so we went there for dinner. We both ordered Nasi Goreng with Chicken. The food was good but very pricey, and we didn’t like that we had to pay for water. Not sure if that is typical for all Belgium restaurants.

Brugge is a beautiful place to be. Unless you’re diabetic! The number of shops selling delectable sweets is incredible! Waffles, macaroons, nougat … chocolate, ice cream. I resisted all the temptations except for the beautiful macaroons being sold in a stand at a market. My mom use to bake them and they were always one my favourites! So, I had to buy a couple. I did well though because I would have got a much better deal by buying five!
