Royal Naval Dockyard

Für die Schüler*innen war heute ein ganz besonderer Tag, denn sie bekamen nach Costa Rica das erste Mal wieder ihre Handys. Für uns Lehrkräfte immer wieder ein spannendes Bild, wie sich die Köpfe vertieft auf das Handydisplay neigen. Allerdings war heute auch noch etwas Programm geplant: es sollte einen Tagesausflug nach Hamilton geben, da dort die Möglichkeit auf freies WLan natürlich durchaus vielversprechender war als im beschaulichen St. George's. So wurden die Handys um kurz vor 10 ausgegeben und wir gingen zusammen zur Busstation. Durch die zuvorkommende Hilfe einer Kioskbesitzerin konnten wir sehr schnell Tickets für die 39 involvierten Personen erstehen und uns auf den Weg nach Hamilton machen. Auf halber Strecke stiegen dann Nicola und Christian für einen Besuch beim Krankenhaus aus und für den Rest ging es auf direktem Weg zum Busbahnhof in Hamilton 🚍
Nach einer kurzen Ansprache bzgl. der Rückfahrt aus Hamilton wurden die Schüler*innen in den free-shore-leave entlassen und Kaspar, Maxim, Matthias, Anna, Lisa und ich machten uns auf den Weg Richtung City. Wir nutzten den Vormittag für eine Shoppingtour und trafen uns um 13 Uhr zu einem gemeinsamen Mittagessen wieder. In der 'Washington Mall' gab es dazu ein sehr leckeres All-you-can-eat-buffet für 25$ p. P.
Im Anschluss hatten wir den Plan mit der Fähre für 5$ zu den 'Royal Naval Dockyards' und von dort etappenweise mit dem Bus zurück nach Hamilton zu fahren. Nach einer 20-minütigen Überfahrt kamen wir wohlbehalten an und sahen am Pier einige Schüler*innen und Lehrkräfte der Johann Smidt stehen, die nun mit 'unserer Fähre' zurückfahren wollten 🛳️
Lisa, Matthias, Anna und ich gingen zunächst in ein Klamottengeschäft und dann zu Fuß zum 'Glass Beach'. Wie der Name vermuten lässt, liegen an diesem Strand sehr viele - meist von den Wellen und der Gischt abgerundete - Glasscherben, die z. T. in verschiedenen Motiven mosaikartig zusammengelegt worden sind. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt ging es dann weiter Richtung 'Horseshoe Bay'. Dort angekommen waren wir alle begeistert von der Schönheit dieses Strandabschnittes, insbesondere, da man von der Straße aus schon die Besonderheit vom Sand ausmachen konnte, denn dieser hatte eine pink schimmernde Farbgebung. Bei näherer Betrachtung sah man im Sand feine pink-rötliche Partikel, die dem Sand außerdem eine sehr geschmeidige Note zu verleihen schienen. Ein Spaziergang an der Küste entlang führte uns im Anschluss zur nächsten Busstation, von der wir nach 30-minütiger Fahrt wieder in Hamilton ankamen 🚌
In Hamilton stießen wir dann zu Nicola und Christian, die etwa 5 h im Krankenhaus verbracht hatten. Wir gingen gemeinsam zu einem Supermarkt und nahmen dann den nächsten Bus zurück nach St. George's. Nach dem Abendessen saß ich noch länger im Messroom neben Anna und Marie und wir unterhielten uns über allerlei, z. B. über Maries Telefonat mit ihrer Mama am heutigen Tag. Außerdem zeigte mir Anna noch spannende Screenshots aus der Elterngruppe unserer Schüler*innen, in denen es um den Gossip-Girl-Tagesbericht und das Mysterium der, den Schüler*innen zugeordneten, Zahlen ging. Amüsiert vom Tag ging es dann auch in die wohlverdiente Nachtruhe 💤

-> To the end of the island 🏝️

Today was a very special day for the students as they got their cell phones for the first time since Costa Rica. For us teachers, it's always an exciting sight to see their heads bent over their cell phone displays. However, there was also something else planned for today: there was to be a day trip to Hamilton, where the possibility of free WiFi was of course more promising than in tranquil St. George's. So the cell phones were handed out shortly before 10 and we went to the bus station together. Thanks to the obliging help of a kiosk owner, we were able to buy tickets for the 39 people involved very quickly and set off for Hamilton. Halfway there, Nicola and Christian got off for a visit to the hospital and the rest of us went straight to the bus station in Hamilton 🚍
After a short speech about the return journey from Hamilton, the students were released into the free-shore-leave and Kaspar, Maxim, Matthias, Anna, Lisa and I made our way towards the city. We used the morning for a shopping tour and met up again at 1 pm for lunch. In the 'Washington Mall' there was a delicious all-you-can-eat buffet for $25 per person.
Afterwards, we planned to take the ferry to the Royal Naval Dockyards for $5 and then take the bus back to Hamilton in stages. After a 20-minute crossing, we arrived safely and saw some students and teachers from Johann Smidt standing on the pier, ready to take 'our ferry' back 🛳️
Lisa, Matthias, Anna and I first went to a clothes store and then walked to Glass Beach. As the name suggests, there are lots of broken pieces of glass on this beach - mostly rounded off by the waves and spray - some of which have been laid together in a mosaic-like pattern. After a short stop, we continued towards 'Horseshoe Bay'. Once there, we were all amazed by the beauty of this stretch of beach, especially as you could already make out the peculiarity of the sand from the road, as it had a shimmering pink color. On closer inspection, you could see fine pink-reddish particles in the sand, which also seemed to give the sand a very smooth touch. A walk along the coast then took us to the next bus station, from where we arrived back in Hamilton after a 30-minute drive 🚌
In Hamilton, we joined Nicola and Christian, who had spent about 5 hours in hospital. We went to a supermarket together and then took the next bus back to St. George's. After dinner, I sat next to Anna and Marie in the Messroom for a while and we talked about all sorts of things, such as Marie's phone call with her mom today. Anna also showed me some exciting screenshots from our students' parents' group, which were about the Gossip Girl daily report and the mystery of the numbers assigned to the students. Amused by the day, we then went to a well-deserved night's sleep 💤

My personal highlight:
The time at Horseshoe Bay and the thoughtful and soothing tranquillity within our small group 🏖️
