    First daytrip from Nanaimo

    We arrived in Nanaimo, had a big night out and slept quite a while in on the next day. The day was already half over so we been just around in Nanaimo.
    The next day we went to a car rental place, booked a car for 3 days and now I will talk about the first day trip!

    The day was absolutely amazing! Our first stop was a little trail in the woods, I never saw big trees like this in my life. After walking and driving around for a while we went to Port Alberni where we grabbed something to eat. Done eating and filled with energy we made our way to a river where the possible was high to see black bears! And that is what happened, first time seeing a bear in the nature in my life. What a moment, he was catching fish on the other side of the river. What a start for the road trip days!

    On our way back to Nanaimo (our base) we did another little hike to a waterfall. Not the best waterfall but we had a fun time while trail running there.

    Back in the hostel. Time to chill, recover and get ready for the next day.

    Cathedral Grove

    Cathedral Grove ist der Name, unter dem der nunmehr 391 ha große MacMillan Provincial Park auf Vancouver Island auch bekannt ist.
    Der größte Baum ist übrigens eine 76 m hohe und 800 Jahre alte Douglasie, die einen Stammumfang von 9 m hat.Weiterlesen

    Last ferry ride

    After spending the night in the most luxurious Airbnb imaginable, I decided it was only right that I try out the Boomerangs Cafe - “featuring an array of classic Australian dishes & drinks, with a focus on breakfast.” It was quite a shock to discover that eggs is a classic Australian dish!
    The provided jams on the table did not include Vegemite! On politely enquiring, I was told it is kept behind the counter. Because people steal it! Especially in the summer tourist months. Bwahah. I can just imagine them thinking they have stolen something really special only to discover it’s an acquired taste!

    It was an overcast day with the possibility of some rain. The town and surrounding mountains look quite different without the blue skies I’ve been seeing. Apparently it hasn’t rained for quite some time. After all, it’s close to two weeks since the last rain!
    We start heading out of Port Alberni with final destination of Vancouver.

    As there is only one road in and out of Port Alberni, it’s back up over the hump and down to Cathedral Grove. Today we have time to stop and wander through. Huge trees and beautiful mosses and creeks. The feeling reminds me of the Tasmanian forests around Cradle Mountain or Mount Field National Park.
    The road is packed full of tourists going in both directions.

    We keep on moving and our next stop is in Coombs to see “The Goats on the Roof”. It’s not hyperbole - there are real goats on a real roof that has sod growing on it. It’s been turned into a combination tourist attraction/farmers market/specialty restaurants.

    We grab a bite to eat and I try some “Candied Salmon”. Interesting taste!

    Finally we arrive at Duke Point to catch the
    Ferry to Vancouver. This one leaves from a different terminal than the one I took the other day and it arrives at a different terminal in Vancouver. The other day I landed north (?) of Vancouver. This one lands you south-ish of Vancouver.
    Just as we’re headed out of Duke Point there are two humpback whales breaching just out the front of the ship. I can vaguely see them but there’s no hope of a photo at this distance. Instead I just watched them.

    Vancouver seems to be an expensive place to stay. Whenever I’ve been looking, prices are around the $200 mark at a minimum.

    When booking tonight’s accommodation I could choose to stay right next to the bike shop we are meeting at for $CAD350 ($AUD400).
    Or I could stay 30 minutes away for $CAD147. Guess which one I chose. It couldn’t possibly be worse than the stabbing motel.

    Serendipity is holding up. A beautiful place on a quiet street. Safe for me, safe for the bike, clean and exceptionally comfy!
    I duck out for dinner and find a pizza restaurant nearby. Who would have thought it was a good idea to put macadamia nuts 🥜 on a Hawaiian pizza?

    Eigentlich ruhiger Tag

    Heute wollten wir es etwas Ruhig angehen, was bei uns ja bekanntlich nicht so gut funktioniert..
    Nach dem Zmorge ging es in den Cathedral Grove Provincial Park wo wir die riesen western redcedar und Douglasien Bäume bestaunen konnten, einige älter als 800 Jahre crazy.. Obwohl es sehr trocken ist, ist der Park trotzdem total grün und echt mystisch. Weiter ging es nach Port albany wo wir eigentlich am Hafen unser Sandwich essen wollten, doch schon die Parkplatz Suche war keine Einfache Aufgabe. Stellte sich heraus das Heute der Letzte Flug der Hawaii Martin Mars, ein Waterbomber zur bekämpfung von Waldbränden war. Hunderte Schaulustige hatten sich am Pier versammelt für das Specktackel und wir waren genau zur passenden Zeit am richtigen Ort👌
    Weiter zum Spider und Hornlake, der erste liessen wir dann doch aus. Am Hornlake konnten wir Wunderschöne Häuser direkt am Wasser sehen, was uns etwas neidisch machte.. Wir fanden aber auch noch ein schönes Plätzchen und natürlich durfte eine Abkühlung nicht fehlen.

    Hunting Bears

    Today is an easier day and Marg and I are just going to do a bit of exploration in the area.
    After a major sleep in I manage to check out just before the 11am deadline.
    This morning I notice the view out the back windows. There’s what looks like a caravan with aluminium foil over its windows. Hmm 🤔 And you might charitably call it a caravan park. At a stretch.
    It ticked the two boxes I really do prefer when booking accommodation: clean & bed is relatively comfy. Bonus was this was also exceptionally cheap. In fact it was even cheaper than the Painted Turtle and I had my own bathroom here.
    Because I’m moving to new accommodation tonight we drop my bag at Marg’s and then head out for the day.
    Marg’s heard there have been some bear sightings so we’re going to head over that way.
    We take some roads through beautiful forests and end up at Stamp Falls where I learn more about how the salmon get upstream. This is important because with so many salmon making their way upstream later this month, this is where the bears hang out to grab their dinner.
    Sadly there are only 10-15 salmon hanging about and zero bears 🐻
    Still absolutely magnificent falls and the fish ladder sees 40 million (!) salmon make their way upstream each year.
    There’s even a live webcam feed where you can watch them!
    We then headed to Sproat Lake for lunch on the shores. Unfortunately the restaurant was having “staffing issues” so they were closed but we managed a sub sandwich instead!
    Next we head back to Port Alberni to watch the final flight of the “Mighty Mars”.
    This is a waterbomber plane that was first used during world war 2. It has played a crucial role in fighting fires over the years and is a well-loved local icon.
    It was on its final flight to a museum down in Victoria, Vancouver Island so the whole town was put to watch it fly over.
    For the end of my day, I check in to the Airbnb which I managed to book.
    There were multiple attractions in town this weekend which explains why I found it hard to book accommodation.
    In any event - this one was magnificent. Super clean, super secure, a bed second to none and cheap!
    I was pleased to be staying here tonight. At the Mars flight, a friend of Marg’s mentioned there had been a stabbing at that venue 10 days ago!! 😮    Weiterlesen

    Durch den müstischen Wald und einem kurzen Spaziergang kamen wir am "hole in the wall" an - kurz ein paar Bilder gemacht und weiter ging es.

    MacMillan Provincial Park

    Heute ist nicht nur Viktoria Day in Kanada, sondern wir haben Feuerhochzeit.

    So machen wir erstmal das, was viele fast Kanadier heute machen, wir fahren uns was anschauen.

    In der Nähe gibt es ein „Hole in the Wall“. Dieses Loch ist aber nicht natürlich entstanden, sondern 1940 wurde hier eine Wasserleitung gebaut, die aber nicht fertig gestellt wurde und so entstandet dieses Loch.

    Auch hier in der Nähe ist der „Cathedral Grove“. Das sind zwei Trails im MacMillan Park mit riesigen Douglasien und Rotzedern.
    Die sind teilweise über 800 Jahre alt und die größte Douglasie hat einen Umfang von über 9m.

    Bei einem schweres Unwetter am Neujahrstag 1997 stürzten Hunderte von riesigen Bäumen um und verwüstete Teile des Wegesystems. So sehen wir viele der riesigen Bäume nun am Boden liegen. Die umgestürzten Bäume öffnen das Kronendach und bieten Licht, Platz, Schutz und Nährstoffe für die nächsten Pflanzengenerationen.

    Der Besuch hat sich gelohnt.

    MacMillan Provincial Park - Elk Falls

    Na een heerlijk nachtje slapen gunde Manne het ons om tot 08:15 te blijven liggen. Vandaag stond ons weer een druk programma te wachten met veel rij tijd dus na het ontbijt en het getreuzel vertrokken we eigenlijk een uur te laat. We hadden een rit van 1.5 uur voor de boeg naar MacMillan Provincial Park. Eenmaal aangekomen bleek de parkeerplaats de vele geïnteresseerden niet helemaal baas te kunnen. Na een rondje te hebben gereden vonden we een plekje om onze camper te parkeren. Het was inmiddels al 12:30 dus besloten we om eerst maar even wat te gaan eten. Toen we ‘t brood achter de kiezen hadden gingen we op pad. Het park was aangelegd met vele vlonder paden en er stonden Pseudotsuga menziesii van wel 800 jaar oud! Joekels van wel 2.5 meter doorsnee die zelfs de heftigste bosbranden kunnen overleven. Verder waren er veel Thuja plicata te zien met ook een immense omtrek. Het was echt prachtig. Aan de overkant van de parkeerplaats lokte ons nog een vlonder pad met eveneens veel oude en grote bomen. Er was ook een kleine rivier te vinden waar Manne nog wat aan het spelen was. Het water bleek toch te koud te zijn voor ‘m dus liepen we maar weer terug naar de camper. We moesten weer een goed uur terug rijden naar onze volgende stop. Anke leek het leuk om niet de snelweg te nemen maar een speciale oceaan route die, zoals je misschien al verwacht ons langs de kust laat rijden. Na wederom weer 160 liter in de tank te hebben gepompt reden we langs de kust naar onze volgende stop. Eenmaal aangekomen waren we eigenlijk al best gaar van de dag maar het was maar 400 meter lopen dus we zouden zo weer terug zijn. Dat bleek dus ongeveer een kilometer te zijn en met een vermoeid jongentje op je rug en beste trappen was het nogal een uitdaging. Eenmaal daar was het uiteraard weer prachtig! Een mooie waterval en een hangbrug boven de rivier. We waren rond 18:00 terug op de camping dus snel even wat piepers koken met witte bonen in tomatensaus en kabeljauwfilet (uit de vriezer van de supermarkt). Tijdens het eten koken kreeg Anke te horen dat er Orca’s of hoe ze het hier noemen: Killer Whale onze kant op kwamen. We hadden het eten net op en verdikkeme daar zwom een grote groep Orca’s voorbij. Ze waren erg ver weg maar we zagen de rugvinnen prima en het was hopelijk een mooi voorproefje op wat ons morgen staat te wachten. Dan gaan we namelijk een 6 uur durende tocht beleven op de oceaan die ons hopelijk walvissen en Orca’s van dicht bij gaat laten zien.Weiterlesen

    McLean Mill

    Eigentlich wollte wir heute nichts machen, aber hier in der Nähe gibt es eine Sägewerk Mühle, und die ist morgen geschlossen, dann schauen wir halt heute.

    Das ganze Gebiet hier lebt von der Holzverarbeitung. Dieses Sägewerk wurde von 1926 bis 1965 betrieben und ist das einzigste in Kanada das mit einer Dampfmaschine betrieben wurde.

    Es wird kein Eintritt erhoben und am Eintritt bekommt man einen Plan für eine Self Guided Tour. Das Gelände ist 12,8 Hektar groß und man kann sich noch gut vorstellen wie das früher hier so war.    Weiterlesen

    ZurĂźck nach Port Alberni

    Auf der gleichen Strecke wie wir gekommen sind geht es zurück, es gibt nur die eine Straße von Ost nach West, oder umgekehrt. Wir fahren wieder bis nach Port Alberni und da es immer mal wieder regnet, machen wir erstmal Wäsche und gehen einkaufen.

    So geht der Tag auch schnell um. Zum Übernachten stehen heute bei Bob und Brenda im Garten. Sie wohnen etwas am Ortsrand von Port Alberni und ihr Grundstück ist 10.000 qm groß. Wieder ein toller Platz und super nette Menschen.    Weiterlesen
