    Zurück in Calgary

    May 5 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

    Driving from airport to Canmore

    March 14 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ -6 °C

After leaving Jeanne off at the airport, we travelled to Banff mainly along the AB-1.

As we travelled out of Calgary, there were lots of houses all built close together. With the wide open spaces in USA and Canada, up to this point, it’s been an unusual sight.

For almost half the journey it was flat with little hint of any mountains of the Banff National Park. Until we passed Morley and then passing the Kananaskis River, the mountains started to appear.

There was a wildlife crossing… these are structures that allow animals to cross safely over human-made barriers like this road!

Before Canmore it starts to rain bringing the mist down 🙄. I wondered if it was going to clear at all.

    Calgary - Olympia und Frauenrechte

    September 22, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Read more

    Day 205/206: Calgary Part 1

    August 3, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Drive time between Winnipeg & Calgary is 13.5 hours; plus, the landscape is Midwest farmland with fields and a few salt flats. We made the journey a single day with podcasts, music, and naps.

We are staying with Kieran’s cousin Kathleen and her husband Dan and daughter Zoey. Their cute house is nestled in northern Calgary with pine trees and hills. Much of Kieran’s family lives in Calgary so we got some tips from cousin David and others on where to visit.

Next day we drove downtown to try Establishment Brewing and Master Beef Hot Pot Restaurant; best hot pot Kieran has had! Next, hit the CN Tower and walked around downtown until a huge storm hit.

Kathleen and Zoey were out of town, but arrived back at 7pm. Zoey made it clear that could snuggle with her dolls this evening. Once she was put to bed, we ordered sushi, had a delicious dinner, and snuggled with our plushies.

    “Down Day”

    June 16, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Today we slept in, had a slow morning, ate some leftovers, and did some laundry. We also celebrated Father’s Day by taking Jon to downhill karting in Calgary (at one of the sites of the 1988 Olympics). He seemed to enjoy this. We rode up on some ski lifts (much easier to get in them without a snowboard attached!). Surprisingly Caleb (usually my hesitant kid) took to it quickly and enjoyed speeding down the hill (beating us all), as did Sam, but Grace (my usual speed-demon and thrill-seeker) went very slowly her first trip down and was nervous about having to steer herself, and I had to convince her to try and go a second time. By the third, and final, trip down the hill, they were all speeding down. The kids and I were able to speed up faster than Jon, but he got up to a higher top speed for sure, just like in Mariokart, guess that makes Jon Donkey Kong 😂😂😂. It seems Caleb and Sam are both fine going fast if they feel they have some level of control, and Grace prefers to go fast when somebody else is in charge or she’s on a track, like with rollercoasters. I’m definitely not looking forward to trying to teach her how to drive someday. Afterwards, we went back to our Airbnb and Caleb got to finish watching his birthday movie on the iPad (as he only got to watch the first half or so on his actual birthday because it was so late by the time we got in to the Airbnb). Later, we went out to dinner at Smitty’s, which was not very busy. The food was decent (me and the kids breakfast food was good, Jon was underwhelmed by his too-thin roast beef) though they apparently have no clue what sweet tea is (Jon ordered sweet tea and was served hot tea).Read more

    Calgary Olympic Park and Stampede

    June 1, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics and the ski area that was used is now The Winsport Canada Olympic Park. During the off season they have Downhill Karting. Hop in the driver's seat and let gravity do the rest. You're in full control of your speed as you ride down 1.1 miles on a 3 wheeled cart fueled by gravity. We went down the hill twice 😜 it was a rush, especially if you avoided using your brakes 😉!!!

No visit to Calgary is complete until you visit the Stampede arena. The Annual Calgary Stampede, which locals refer to as “The greatest outdoor show on earth “is actually the World’s largest outdoor Rodeo🤠. They also refer to themselves as “NASHVILLE NORTH” – we’re sure Nashville appreciates that😉 We visited the exhibit at The Sam Centre, that just opened this week. Gives a history of the event and what it means to this city. It is well done. Michael even took a shot at the Trick Rope

    May 4, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Turnen, Judo.
