    Über Ston nach Dubrovnik

    Immer an der Küste entlang – wir fahren weiter nach Dubrovnik, zur letzten größeren Küstenstadt im Süden Kroatiens. Südlich von Ploče liegt eine der wenigen, flachen Küstenabschnitte Dalmatiens – das 100 km² große Neretva-Delta mit seinem von Menschenhand gemachten, fruchtbaren Ackerland. Felder und Obstplantagen wechseln mit langgezogenen Wasserflächen ab. Der Neum-Korridor von Bosnien und Herzegowina unterbricht dann das kroatische Staatsgebiet auf einer Breite von etwa 7,5 Kilometern. Seit Mitte 2022 bildet nun aber die futuristische Pelješac-Brücke eine Straßenverbindung zwischen den beiden Teilen Kroatiens. Wir brauchen dadurch weder in Bosnien - Herzegowina einreisen, noch wieder ausreisen. Bei Ston geht es über eine Landenge wieder runter von der Halbinsel. Die Lage des Ortes war strategisch. Nur so ist zu erklären, warum hier eine Befestigungsanlage ab dem 15. Jahrhundert entstand. Die Mauer mit seinen 41 Wehrtürmen und 5,5 km Länge ist das weltweit größte Befestigungswerk nach der Chinesischen Mauer, so lesen wir. Erwähnenswert ist auch die Meerwassersaline von Ston, denn die wird ohne Unterbrechung seit der Antike betrieben. Das Wasser in der Bucht von Mali Ston ist zudem noch so gut, dass hier schon seit dem 17. Jahrhundert Austern gezüchtet werden. Schon Bernhard Shaw schwärmte von der Altstadt Dubrovniks. Und wahrlich sie schön und das wissen viele, sehr viele. Die Idylle der letzten Tage ist vorbei. Die Gäste eines vermutlich sehr großen Kreuzfahrtschiffts werden gerade durch die engen Gassen Dubrovniks geschleust. Der Preis von 40 € für die Begehung der Altstadt-Mauer ist wohl einkalkuliert. Wir zahlen 5,30 € für den Parkplatz – pro Stunde! Die Stunde nutzen wir, dann verabschieden wir uns wieder schnell.Read more

    Dubrovnik joining our Intrepid tour

    Last Day in Dubrovnik

    The morning began with a leisurely breakfast, catching up with Reynold before he departed for Zurich. Afterward, we strolled through the old town, which was packed with visitors—three cruise ships in port had brought waves of tourists, making the streets especially busy.

    To escape the crowds, we headed to the beach club for a refreshing cold drink, soaking in the coastal views one last time.

    As evening approached, we met the group of fellow travelers joining us for the next leg of the journey. Our group consists of nine people, including our guide, George, who hails from Serbia. Interestingly the eight of us are all Aussies.

    We rounded off the day with a fun group dinner at a nearby restaurant, just down the road from our accommodation—which conveniently sits opposite the port. It was a good way to start the next part of our adventure.    Read more

    Dubrovnik

    Dubrovnik is stunning, sun shining on stone streets, the shimmering Adriatic, and history everywhere you look. We climbed the ancient city walls for breathtaking views & enjoyed the amazing fresh seafood. Catching up with Reynold was a bonus - he flew in from Zurich to meet us.Read more

    Tschüss Montenegro

    Schön wars. Wir fahren die Runde um die Bucht zuende, da geht es nach Kroatien. Kurz vor Dubrovnik finden wir den Platz Camping Kate. Zum Strand runter führen über 200 Stufen. Mit unseren Nachbarn machen wir uns auf zum Biergarten.Read more

    Dubrovnik, Croatia

    A clean, safe, lovely place. It's hard to believe it experienced war just 30 years ago. We toured the Old Town and visited the newer, wealthier areas and a small pebble strewn beach. How clear and blue was the water! We learned a lot about Croatian history and makeup. Then back on board for some time in the sun. I'm really missing home but glad to be having this adventure.Read more

    Day 6

    Day 6- Croatia;Dubrovnik island hopping!

    Today was a day on the sea on a cruise around the islands. After 30 mins of cruising in the slightly refreshing (cold) winds, we docked at our first island; Kolocep. We chose to join the optional guided walk across the island to meet the boat on the other side. There are no roads on the island and only one car which is for the fire service. We passed the school where it schooled 4 children as that was all there was living on the island currently! Beautiful island and very peaceful.
    After boarding the boat, we cruised for about an hour on to the next island; Sipan. We had a bit of free time so we chose to lounge by the sea, basking in the sun, out of the wind and then had a dance on the promenade. Boarding the boat once again for
    30 mins of cruising on to Lopud. Lopud is one of the biggest islands. We decided to walk up and over the island to another beach. There were these buggies available to take lazy tourists but we decided to save our money and get some exercise. On the way we picked an orange from a tree. It was big, squishy and smelt amazing. We eagerly peeled it and immediately found it was very bitter and not yet ready to eat. Very disappointed 😞. When we got to the beach there wasn't much to do except for lounging so Andy had a sleep (I tried to but couldn't get warm enough). We then walked up a very old path with wonky steps and returned to the other side of the island again. We (what I should say was, I) wanted to find an ice cream but instead we had the most amazing large milky coffee so much better than the usual small offerings. We then got back on the boat for one last time, back to Dubrovnik. On the way back we had a dance on the top deck. It was extremely windy and a bit wobbly so it was not our best dance but had to be done really 😂
    Really lovely crew, plentiful drinks offered, good simple lunch all included in the price. The boat was wooden and had been spruced up over the winter with newly varnished and painted surfaces. It was only it's 3rd outing this season.
    Excellent day out!

    After having an ice cream (yes of course Andy wanted one as well) we spent the early eve sitting by the harbour, out of the wind and in fabulous sunshine.
    Last stop was a bite to eat. We found a brilliant takeaway place called Tuttobene and had the best chicken tortilla filled with loads of salad and kidney beans.    Read more

    Day 5 -Croatia; Dubrovnik

    We started the day with a lovely cafe stop close to our accommodation. Beautiful view with blue skies and very sunny. Coffee very small haven't quite worked out how to get a long coffee ordered.

    We purchased the city pass so we could walk the city walls mainly. This took a very long time as so many photo opportunities with amazing views along the way. Also now that we were closer to the roof tops after many stairs being climbed, Andy was very obsessed with how the roof tiles worked (slightly odd). He now has plans for roofing his building as it does need a new roof soon. Listed planning rules for his building probably won't allow his plans, however he will continue to dream ... 

    Researched the wine tasting museum/tours and  decided DIY wine tasting from the supermarket was the way to go.  The only rule was that local wines would be purchased.

    Earlier whilst walking the walls we had spotted an amazing location for said wine tasting. Once we had our wine purchase and glasses relocated from our accommodation in our bag, we sought the spot out. It was out of the wind, had lapping sea water and beautiful views. Happy days!!! As we were concerned about nutrition, having missed lunch earlier we ate our bargain bio fibre yogurts and 3 Brazil nuts from our survival stash with the wine.  Life does not get better than this. #cheap date.

    Then we went for a meal of lamb and chicken kebabs. No wine required due to having a little (!) earlier.

    Let's go to the Beach, Beach!!!

    Nach 5 regnerischen Tagen in Dubrovnik hieß es nun endlich raus in die Natur, ans Meer, die ersten Sonnenstrahlen und ein bisschen Ruhe genießen. Nach einem ausgiebigen Einkauf bei DM und LIDL ging es vorerst jedoch noch nach Orašac in ein kleines gemütliches Café, wo wir die letzten Tage ein bisschen reflektierten.

    Dann peilten wir eine Landzunge irgendwo im Nirgendwo als unser erstes richtiges Ziel an. Wir hatten den ganzen Ort für uns (was uns da noch wie ein Segen vorkam, sollte sich auch in den kommenden Tagen als geläufiges Muster herauskristallisieren). Für mich ging es zum ersten Mal ins Meer, es war unfassbar kalt und voller Seeigel aber auch extrem erfrischend. Wir beschlossen spontan trotz des etwas mühsamen Weges, auf der "Mini-Insel" zu schlafen. Sonnenuntergang und -aufgang sowie einen super klaren Sternenhimmel konnten wir ungestört aus unserem Zelt bestaunen.

    Am zweiten Tag ging es an den nächsten einsamen Strand, etwas weiter nördlich. Auch hier war der Weg leicht sportlich, aber definitiv den Abstieg wert. Wir haben nicht wirklich viel anders gemacht: den Strand ausgiebig genossen, gut gegessen und dann unser Zelt bei untergehender Sonne aufgeschlagen. Trotzdem einfach toll :)

    Die beiden Tage und Nächte in der Natur taten wirklich unfassbar gut. Obwohl wir wahrscheinlich mindestens eine Woche oder sogar noch länger so weiter machen könnten entschieden wir uns, in der Zwischenzeit kleinere etwas touristisch geprägte Orte zu erkunden.     Finally, Dubrovnik

    We made it! A challenging last leg south to Dubrovnik. The city is perched on a rocky crag therefore our entry to the city was top down.
    What a fun journey into the past of Old Town.
    We enjoyed the sun warmth on a bar situated on the walls of Dubrovnik.
