    Ciro Trail vers la côte

    Nous repartons de Mostar après un bon repos et on emprunte le chemin d’une ancienne voie ferrée (Ciro Trail) pour rejoindre la côte et Dubrovnik.
    Sur la route on croise Louise et Thomas, deux cyclovoyageurs français, avec qui on forme un joyeux peloton les deux jours qui nous mènent vers Dubrovnik.

    Et comme on a retrouvé le soleil, on a même décidé de quitter plus vite le Ciro Trail pour rejoindre la mer Adriatique et s’y plonger après une belle étape de vélo. Jusqu’au bout on n’était pas sûrs de pouvoir y arriver, entre la route en travaux, une vache qui semblait avoir décidé de ne pas nous laisser passer, un poste frontière ouvert par miracle alors que la route était bloquée… L’arrivée sur cette magnifique baie n’en était que plus belle 😍

    Adriatic sea adventures 🇭🇷

    Some of us more ready than others for our boat odyssey boat adventure, those that shall be named and shamed were the whiskey drinkers (Dad, Paul, Michael and Chad) up until til 3.30am and impressively all on time for the boat tour pick up at 10am! What a wonderful trip on the Adriatic Sea and to the island of Miljet. A stopover for a swim, snorkel or SUP. Crystal clear water. Off for another short cruise to the restaurant on the island where the host and his whole family welcomed us with amazing fresh produce, service and pride with their array of food. The kids were patient as it was a longer than anticipated lunch. After dessert they all headed back to the boats to swim. A stunning day. All chilling now and a few going to meet for the soccer or have down time. Another perfect day! We are blessed. 😇Read more

    Elaphiti Inseln

    Wir haben heute eine Bootstour gemacht, auf die wir bereits aufmerksam wurden, als wir im April hier waren. Damals hat das Wetter noch nicht mitgespielt, heute war es perfekt 😎. Ein Ausflug zu den Elaphiti Inseln. Sie liegen vor der Küste Dubrovniks, bestehen aus fünf Hauptinseln und unzähligen kleinen Inselchen, Felsen und Riffen, wirklich schön. Koločep, Lopud und Šipan sind bewohnt, während Jakljan und Olip keine dauerhaften Einwohner haben. Diese Inselgruppe wurde in der antiken römischen Zeit erkannt und beschrieben und nach der Hirschpopulationen benannt, die dort in der Vergangenheit zu Hause war („Elaphos“ bedeutet „Hirsch“ auf Griechisch).
    Und, eine tolle neue Entdeckung haben wir heute gemacht 💡. Bzw. 2 💡. 1) Rosmarin wächst auch auf Mauern. 2) Wusstet ihr, wie Maulbeeren aussehen und schmecken? Wir nicht. Deshalb haben wir uns auch nicht getraut, die roten Früchte der Bäume zu probieren, die heute vor einer Kirche standen. Stattdessen hatten wir ein Foto gemacht, um den Baum später zu bestimmen. Zum Glück kamen 2 nette Frauen aus Brasilien vorbei und sagten uns, dass man die Früchte essen kann. Und wie gut sie schmecken 😋😋😋, ganz süß. Wahnsinn, wie alt man werden muss, um das 1. Mal Maulbeeren zu essen! Mit den beiden Frauen hatten wir dann noch ein so nettes Gespräch und zum Schluss eine ganz herzliche Verabschiedung. Wieder eine der besonderen Begegnungen mit Menschen aus aller Welt, die beim Reisen so große Freude bereiten.
    Man kann aber auch von Menschen enttäuscht sein. Die Crew auf dem Boot heute war wirklich spitze. Wir wurden die ganze Zeit mit Getränken versorgt, es gab Lunch, zwischendurch immer wieder ein Späßchen, zum Schluss einen Schnaps und am Ende, nach einem 7stündigen Ausflug, waren wir die einzigen, die Trinkgeld gegeben haben.     Dubrovnik - Sipan - Mljet

    At 0700 the Harmonia sailed for the island of Sipan. We had breakfast before Eddy, one of our two guides, briefed us about the activities for the day. Eddy is an excellent, very personable guide. On arrival at Sudurad bikes were disembarked and we all went on a short ride to the village Sipanski Luca just to become acquainted with our bikes.
    Back on deck we sailed for the island of Mljet.
    2 courses were served for lunch and then we had a siesta time before disembarking at Mljet. We visited some Roman ruins at Polace before riding in the Mljet National Park along the edge of the lake system that finally ended in the ocean. A very picturesque ride.
    Another delicious 3 course dinner before showers and bed! Our first day couldn't have been better, however, we hear that tomorrow is much more challenging!    Read more

    Ston Wall

    Ston, Dubrovnik-Neretva, Kroatien

    Nach einigen ruhigen Tagen auf der Halbinsel Pelješac fuhren wir am Mittwoch weiter nach Dubrovnik. Auf dem Weg machten wir noch einen Zwischenhalt in Ston, einer kleinen Stadt mit einer grossen Festungsmauer - der grössten Europas.

    Da Marion sich noch von einer Lebensmittelvergiftung erholte, ging ich alleine auf die Besichtigung der kroatischen Version der Chinesischen Mauer. Obwohl diese erst im Mittelalter erbaut wurde, fühlte ich mich wie ein römischer Legionär auf Patrouille durch ein antikes Städtchen. Der Ausblick von der Mauer war grossartig, doch der Weg dahin sehr streng und ich war froh, musste ich keine Rüstung tragen😉.

    Nun geht es für einige Tage nach Dubrovnik, die wahrscheinlich letzte Station in Kroatien und ein Wallfahrtsort für Game of Thrones Fans.    Read more

    Mittelalterliches Städtchen Ston

    Das kleine, mittelalterliche Städtchen Ston im Süden von Kroatien liegt auf der Halbinsel Pelješac und besitzt die längste Steinmauer Europas. Mit einer länge von 5,5 Kilometern besitzt Ston die zweitgrößte, erhaltene Wehrmauer der Welt, nach der weltberühmten chinesischen Mauer.

    Die Geschichte von Ston reicht zurück bis ins 14. Jahrhundert, wo die monumentale "Stoner Mauern" von der Stadtrepublik Dubrovnik errichtet wurden, zum Schutz der Salzgewinnungsanlagen und dem vollständig kontrollierbaren Zugang zur Halbinsel Pelješac.

    Ston besteht aus den zwei unabhängigen Stadtteilen Ston (ca. 500 Einwohner) und Mali Ston (ca. 200 Einw.), die durch die rund 5 km lange Mauer die über den Berg führt und einer Festungsanlage miteinander verbunden sind.

    Ston und Umgebung verzaubern mit einer einzigartigen Atmosphäre all die jenen, die sich nach Ruhe, sauberem Meer und Spuren alter Kulturen sehnen. Die engen, ruhigen Straßen und Gassen, sowie stattlichen alten Häuser des Städtchens, die ältesten aktiven Salzgärten der Welt, die längste Stadtmauer Europas und vor allem die gastronomischen Besonderheiten des Gebietes laden uns herzlich ein, hier länger zu verweilen.
    Wir haben uns dort rundherum wohl gefühlt und im kleinen Hafen von Ston übernachtet.
    Unser Morningwalk führt uns in das 2 Kilometer entfernte Mali-Ston. Das Örtchen ist natürlich, bezaubernd und nicht ganz so touristisch wie Ston.
    Wir überlegen wie und von wem diese riesige Befestigungsmauer wohl gebaut worden ist . Unfassbar was Menschen alles leisten! Auch heute wird überall gewerkelt und ausgebessert an den Befestigungsanlagen und der kleinen Kirche. So haben die Leute hier über lange Zeit Arbeit. 👍🏻
    Den Eintrittspreis für den Mauerwalk mit seinen vielen steilen Treppen beträgt 10 Euro.
    Wir mußten die mehrere Kilometer lange Wanderung auf der Mauer trotzdem vertagen, unsere Knie haben „Nein“ gesagt. 😅🥲

    Mljet National Park: a wonder of Nature

    A most memorable day started with a 1.5 hour ferry ride to Mljet Island. Designated in 1960 as a National Park, Mljet NP covers the northern third of Mljet Iskand. The park, which includes the area of sea 500 meters from its rocky shore, is the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean. We hiked to a small bay of Veliko Jezero (Great Lake, but not really a lake as it’s salt water is connected to the Adriatic) and had the best lunch and wonderful swimming in the amazingly clear water. Getting into the water barefoot was a little tricky, as the submerged rocks along the shore are very slippery. The bottom drops off quickly, and soon I’m floating and moving through such clear and clean water. It was such a delight! Photos include some of the picturesque scenes we enjoyed along the way, a few flowering plants, and an aromatic rosemary bush - which apparently grows wild here (too bad the photo does not include its delicious aroma). We only scratched the surface of what this park has to offer. Will we ever come back and spend more time in this beautiful place?Read more

    Split to Dubrovnik

    We rented a car for getting from Split to the beautiful and bustling city of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia. The southern Croatian coast is dissected by a 19 kilometer (12 mile) bit of coastline that is a part of the country of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Known as the Neum corridor, its main attraction is the picturesque city of Neum. We made a brief stop there, where I took the video and the first three photos in this post (I couldn’t resist taking a photo of the two nuns soaking their feet in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea). Driving in Dubrovnik is no fun - narrow streets, cars and motorbikes zipping every which way - we were happy to return the car and get around town by foot. It was a joy watching the ball of our closest star disappear into the sea.Read more

    Boy oh boy. This week has flown by. Each day was supposed to end with a post to this hear penguins.
    Let me just catch y’all up.

    Sunday we drove down the beautiful coast of Croatia as you know.

    Monday, we toured around the old city of Dubrovnik…. I think I already shared this? It was beautiful and peaceful even filled with 1,000’s of travelers.

    Tuesday, that was beach day. It was also VERY relaxing. We sat on the beach and read our books. The water is super super clear and clean. The beaches here are not sandy but round rocks the size of your fist. Each rock is a work of art and tempting to bring home and make some sort of coffee table with. We traveled a bit of a smaller town 40 mins from Dubrovnik and ate another yum fish dinner.

    Wednesday morning we dropped off our friend Tony at the airport. He is flying to Rome for a trip within a trip. Chels and I hung out at the beautiful Airbnb and then did another beach day. We read to each other our books and people watched the locals. The water is very cold in the Adriatic Sea but somehow super refreshing with the dry warm air. For the evening we went to a restaurant/ family’s home. We had an upscale home cooked meal in their 500 year old oil press factory warehouse. They only take 1 or 2 families per meal and do it only a couple of days per week. Thankfully we made it! Messaging the son on WhatsApp we found out that it would be our only night to be able to do it. It consisted of 5 course meal with free wine and beer and home made liquors. All the food and cheese was from their small farm and garden. And everything that needed cooking was done in a fire pit Croatian style called Peka. All for $42 per person.

    Thursday we again hung out at the beach, did some shopping, and relaxed until we had to go back to the airport (30 min drive) in the late afternoon to collect Tony. He really enjoyed Rome.

    Friday Tony and I went rock climbing outside. I found a local spot only 45 mins away and saved a 2 hour trip because of that. It was only us out there and super secluded. Friday night was pizza and downtown boardwalk. Finishing the night with an outdoor movie by the old city.

    Saturday we hopped on a boat that took us to 3 different islands and fed us a fish lunch. Each island had its own beauty that was different from the previous. Unfortunately, we only had a shortish amount of time on each (3 hours, 1 hour, and 1 hour).

    Now, Sunday we’re back at the airport in Split and ready to fly out to Israel. 🙌

    Slano und Dubrovnik

    Wir campen wild am Strand von Slano. Erstmal denken wir, wir fahren nach einem ausgiebigen Bad in der Bucht von Slano weiter. Doch der Platz ist zu verlockend. Also bleiben wir. Beim abendlichen Rundgang durch die Stadt, landen wir zufällig bei einem wunderschönen Chorwettbewerb. Da es immer noch sehr heiß ist, lassen wir über Nacht die Hecktüren auf. Am Sonntag machen wir einen Ausflug mit einem Boot nach Dubrovnik. Wir wissen schon, dass die Stadt überlaufen ist. Trotzdem sind wir von den Menschenmassen geschockt. Ich nehme ein Bad in der Menge und noch viel schöner auch eins an den Außenmauern der Festung im Meer. Endlich Wellen. Nachdem wir an unserem Stellplatz der besonderen Art zurück sind, steht eine nette Polizistin vor uns und gibt uns noch eine Stunde...... Ach schade. Nun geht es weiter. Morgen dann Neuigkeiten aus Montenegro. Hoffentlich immer noch mit dem gleichen Weinvorrat 🍾 - denn der Zoll passt leider gut auf. Wir werden sehen. 🤩Read more
