    Relax- und Planungstag

    April 10 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    Nach der Tour gestern bleiben wir noch einen Tag in Trogir und stocken unsere Vorräte ein wenig auf. Gleichzeitig locken uns in dem Einkaufszentrum die Massagesessel, wo wir uns für 5 Minuten durchkneten lassen. Am Nachmittag planen wir unsere weitere Route. Dabei sind wir auf einige interessante Orte gestoßen, die wir vorher nicht im Visier hatten. Der Sonnenuntergang lockt uns noch einmal in die Altstadt, um danach die beleuchteten Kirchen und Paläste anzuschauen.Read more

    Krka Wasserfälle

    April 7 in Croatia ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

    Unser Ziel heute ist Trogir. Unterwegs entscheiden wir uns jedoch, noch einmal abzubiegen und die Krka Wasserfälle zu besuchen. Bis zum Beginn des Rundwanderweges kann man entweder 900 Meter steil bergab laufen oder den Pendelbus nutzen. Wir wählen den Bus. Und auch hier genießen wir die Vorzüge der Nebensaison, der Eintritt beträgt jetzt 20 Euro pro Person, in der Hauptsaison 40 Euro, und das Beste: Es sind kaum Touristen da. Der Nationalpark Krka wurde 1955 gegründet. Wir sind natürlich wegen der sieben Wasserfälle hier. Die größten und schönsten Wasserfälle sind der Skradinski buk und Roški slap, die wir aber erst am Ende unseres Rundganges sehen werden. Über Holzstege gehen wir quasi direkt über diverse Wasserfälle. Immer wieder bieten sich uns herrliche Ausblicke. Am Rand des Flusses bewundern wir die alten Wassermühlen, mit denen das Getreide auf traditionelle Art zu Mehl gemahlen wurde. Der Skradinski buk ist die siebte, letzte und längste Travertinbarriere am Krka. Über 17 Stufen, verteilt auf 800 Meter Länge mit einem Höhenunterschied von 45,7 Metern stürzt das Wasser in die Tiefe. Über eine Brücke kommen wir direkt an den Fällen vorbei. Von hier aus bringt uns der Bus zum Parkplatz zurück. Der kleine Umweg zu den Krka Wasserfällen hat sich auf alle Fälle gelohnt. Wir sind begeistert. Danach fahren wir an die Küste zurück bis nach Trogir.Read more

    Day 2–5

    Day 1-Split city

    April 3 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    Arrived in Split City and had an hour to wait before we could check in to our Airbnb. Limited cooking options so we plan to buy fresh fruit at the local market which is very traditional so cash required. ATMs charge a flat fee to take out any amount of currency so we are going to go into a bank and see if that option is better. We haven't come on holiday to cook so DIY breakfast and eating out will be the norm whilst away I think.
    After a siesta (we were up at 2am to get the flight early), we went out to the old town. This place has charm in abundance with it's quaint little streets and alley ways. It looked even more pretty once the day light dimmed and the lights illuminated the old buildings and streets. Add to this the promenade with all the restaurants having outdoor seating arrangements to tempt you to sit and eat. We did eventually settle on a waterside restaurant and had locally caught fish dishes. Be warned though a glass of wine is only 0.1 litres size, puney even by my standards.    Read more

    Fahrradtour nach Split

    Da wir mit unseren Van bestimmt keinen Parkplatz in Split finden, fahren wir mit den Fahrrädern los. Zum Teil geht es wunderschön an der Küste entlang. Als wir uns Split nähern, wird es etwas ungemütlicher zu fahren. Die Altstadt, die ebenfalls von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erhoben wurde, entschädigt für die Mühe. Der Palastkomplex ist sicherlich das Highlight der Sehenswürdigkeiten. Im 3. Jahrhundert nach Christus ließ der römische Kaiser Diokletian den Palast als Altersruhesitz in einer Rekordzeit von ungefähr 10 Jahren erbauen. Zur damaligen Zeit lebten etwa 500 Menschen dort. Im 15. Jahrhundert kamen neue Gebäudekomplexe und Bauwerke hinzu wie der Glockenturm der Kathedrale, der heute eines der Wahrzeichen von Split ist. Von der Aussichtsplattform soll man einen fantastischen Blick haben. Uns schrecken allerdings die 500 Stufen hinauf ab. Der Palastkomplex zählt zu den am besten erhaltenen römischen Bauwerken auf der Welt. Um alle Räumlichkeiten zu besichtigen, müssten wir mehr Zeit haben. Da wir aber noch den Rückweg vor uns haben, begnügen wir uns mit der Besichtigung von außen. Und dann treten wir den Rückweg an. In dem kleinen Ort Kaštel Stari legen wir eine Getränkepause ein. Nach insgesamt 60 Kilometern kommen wir wieder am Van an.Read more

    Trogir und kleine Fahrradrunde

    Die historische Stadt Trogir, 1997 zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt, liegt auf einer kleinen Insel zwischen dem Festland und der Insel Ciovo und ist mit einer Steinbrücke mit dem Festland verbunden. Sie wurde als griechische Kolonie gegründet und im Laufe der Jahre vom Römischen Reich, dem Venedig-Reich, dem Byzantinischen Reich und anderen beeinflusst. Im historischen Teil von Trogir gibt es unzählige Kirchen, Türme, Paläste und Bürgerhäuser. Die engen Gassen sind rundherum von einer Stadtmauer umgeben. Bis zur Fertigstellung der Kathedrale Sveti Lovro vergingen 475 Jahre. Auf dem Hauptportal thronen zwei mächtige Löwen, ebenso sind Statuen von Adam und Eva in natürlicher Größe zu sehen. Am Municipal Pier reihen sich zahlreiche Restaurants aneinander. Doch auch hier ist noch Nebensaison, so dass viele Tische frei bleiben. Am Ende der Promenade befindet sich die kleine Festung Kamerlengo, die jedoch geschlossen ist. Am Nachmittag erkunden wir Trogir noch einmal bei einer kleinen Fahrradrunde.Read more

    Day 4

    Day 4-Croatia; Dubrovnik

    April 6 in Croatia ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

    Up early for the ferry from Split to Dubrovnik. The previous sunny and calm days have been replaced with grey and windy... Great timing for a ferry trip of 4.5hrs! Luckily the Adriatic sea isn't the Atlantic as that would have been much more choppy. Also a katameran is more stable than other boats.

    We arrived in Dubrovnik greated by rain and wind. So rather unlike us we decided taking the bus was a better option than walking. After settling in to our accommodation we set out to find a bar and some warmth. Having walked around and climbed a lot of steps we were drawn to an Irish bar which was so warm and cosy it was like having lots of hugs. Quite expensive but the guinessis is imported I suppose 😂. We asked for recommendations where to eat, and reserved a table indoors where the menu looked like it had quite a number of healthy food options. Feeling smug about our soon to have a healthy meal and due to the sun trying to make an appearance, we couldn't resist a gelato purchase. It was the best we've ever tasted 😋.  

    We then went out in the early eve and had an amazing meal at Soul kitchen. Andy is always so accommodating in that we go half and half with our meals so we can have try of both meals. At least he always agrees to do this so I presume he is happy with this arrangement. 

    The sun has finally made an appearance and looking good for the next few days albeit not as warm.    Read more

    Day 3

    Day 3 Split

    April 5 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

    We caught the set of a live blues band (and danced some tracks. Blues really isn't a defined music type, anything goes as far as we can tell. Met a nice German lady who wanted me to teach her to dance but her recently repaired hip put a stop to that once I showed her some steps.... Feeling thankfull we are old but generally fully functioning body wise. 

    Then off by bus to Kasuni beach for a few hours.  Andy may turn into a pizza as he had another slice on route 😂 

    Kasuni beach is very peaceful and has amazing blue water. We did go in despite my 'ooos and ows' from the stones. It's definitely refreshing but pleased I was prepared by bringing my swimming costume. Lovely breeze as well. 

    We decided to walk back and put the bus fare towards a beer! Found a lovely stop to have said beer right on the water front and comfy chairs to boot 😁. 

    The eve was a sunset excursion to Klis fortress. It was pretty good to visit. Game of Thrones used this place as a film location.  Loved the church at the top. The acoustics sounded amazing, even our voices sounded acceptable. 

    When we got back to Split we went in search of vegetables to cook up at the Airbnb as it's fair to say our bodies were craving them. We only found mushrooms, courgette and a sad red pepper but they tasted amazing once cooked up. 

    Last day in Split as we are taking a ferry to Dubrovnik tomorrow, our stay in Split was pretty good.    Read more

    Day 2

    Day 2 Split (eve)

    April 4 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    I think the sun and the atmosphere of these bars in the side street got us drinking on empty stomachs... Unknown to me Andy was 'helping' me out with my 3 pints but Andy also had 4 pints. We still managed to dance to the danceable tunes from the live band however which is quite remarkable. We got loud cheers and clapping from the crowd after dancing which was unexpected and enabled us to start chatting to a few others around us. Met 2 Canadians where one had a very impressive moustache. Even more amazing they had been married for 41yrs!!! How does anyone do that. Also met 2 brilliant Yorkshire gals who were about to start their training to become taught staff. They are so going to be on 'below deck' soon.

    Due to spending the meal budget on beers we ended up having takeaway pizza on the waterfront which was really nice. 

    Andy was very drunk and he ended up falling asleep on the sofa and I placed a bowl near him just in case. Great day!    Read more

    Day 2

    Day 2-Split City

    April 4 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    We paid for an all attraction ticket for the cathedral. The bell tower being the main attraction. Lots of steep, large steps later we arrived at the top. Amazing views rewarded us and as usual the notes of music from somewhere below pricked our ears up. We both said ' we can dance to that' and realised it was coming from a square we had seen last night that had a stage set up in it. So we hoped it would still be going on when we got down (spoiler alert, it was).
    The bells went off due to go off at 12 as they did yesterday so we got closer to them in anticipation (why not!) then waited. Andy pretended he was a cat whilst waiting, basking in the sun having a little snooze. We still had a shock at the loudness when they started (video of the cat being startled, added for comic effect).
    We then carried on with using our full ticket well. The cathedral is very beautiful and peaceful and the crypt also had its own beauty as well as it's own eeriness. Andy was keen to visit the treasury (maybe he thought it involved numbers) and as we were going around we said 'is this like an actual museum' 😱. One of the lovely things about being with each other is we both dislike similar things and museums are one! No long drawn out visits pretending to be interested for us anymore. We got out of there quickly and out to the violinist playing in the square again. So beautiful.
    We then took a walk via a gelato kiosk to Bacvice beach. Andy had a swim in his pants hoping no one noticed. He said the swim was refreshing (dipping my toes was refreshing enough for me).
    We stayed a few hours very nice indeed taking in the view. We wanted the return walk to be different so having watched people go up to the headland in the distance, we realised, majority retraced their steps. One didn't so that was enough to convince me to try it. The small cliff did slightly put me off, yes. After the goat aka Andy, managed to get up and over I followed, after several 'oh shit' moments.
    We got back to Split old town and eventually arrived at a small side street that had live music. All weekend there is a Blues festival and these bars had a band playing. Beers flowed and yes tipsiness started....    Read more
