    Day 40: Zagreb to Zadar

    May 23, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Stopped at a town for groceries and had an extended walk around. Took the lazy way to Zadar and discovered a bikie bar for a drink and an hour later a restaurant in the middle of nowhere serving lamb and pig on a spit. Food was decicious. Then fell over the most amazing town of Radstroke. The whole town is one giant waterfall. Ended the evening blown away by Zadar, the coast and the Sea organ.Read more

    Rastoke, Croatia

    September 8, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

What an exhausting but amazing day. We did a 10 hour tour to the village of Rastoke and then onto the UNESCO listed national park, Plitvice Lakes.

After an informative and entertaining 1 1/2 mini bus ride with our guide Renato we arrived at Rastoke. Located in the town of Slunj, it is known for the Slunjcica River which flows into the Korana River at Rastoke.

At Rastoke, similar natural phenomena are occurring as at the Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke is sometimes known as "the Small Lakes of Plitvice", and is connected to the Plitvice Lakes by the Korana River.

During the Homeland War on November 1991, Rastoke was completely destroyed and devastated. They were renewed with the help of the Ministry of Reconstruction and Development. Today, all the households have returned to Rastoke and 30 residents live there now.

We had time to stroll through the small village, admiring the many waterfalls and waterways. And even though it wasn’t yet 11am, we did enjoy a local wine and beer before making our way to the Plitvice Lakes.

    MoDem: Croatia

    August 2, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

MoDem festival is still magical after years of attending. Every year it seems (almost) every team gets better at what they do, including Psycare 🥰

This year we had a particularly strong team, and although we had many first time psycarers, such an unusually large proportion of them were naturals at it- as if they’d been doing it for years!

It brought me to thinking: what makes a strong Psycarer, apart from Psycare experience? Here’s a list I’ve compiled, copied over from my journal:

Excellent (verbal and nonverbal) communication skills
    Team player mentality
Sense for justice and fairness (Psycare is after all a part of a greater social justice movement!)
Passion for service (ain’t nobody doin this job for money 😂)
Connectedness with oneself and accurate self assessment (what are my strengths and weaknesses? Am I capable of holding space in this particular situation/in this moment?)
    Strong sense of boundaries
Affinity for the nuance of the role of Psycarer (we need to be professional while still authentic and personable)
Groundedness and calmness in intense situations
Vulnerability and honesty (with our team)
Ability to integrate and let go (not get too involved personally/emotionally in cases)

Drop a comment of what you think of this list if you’re a fellow Psycarer. Or if you feel you fit the bill then get in touch with me for next summer to join our community 🥰

    Zadar via Sibenik to Split

    July 21, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

It seems the further south you go in Croatia, the more interesting the countryside looks. When the black mountains (grey looking really) begin to appear, it looks and feels like the Montenegro I know and closer to the Adriatic.
Zadar was more than okay last night. It was really lovely down by the waterside.
After a really good meal in a really popular restaurant called Butlers, we strolled for quite a way through old Zadar. There was a 'burger festival' on that was good fun. We didn't dance but lots of others did. The place was alive and very busy, with ice cream parlours in abundance. Bob Rocks was our choice and it didn't disappoint.
Eventually we got to the waterfront and walked to the end of the peninsular where what was called the 'Water Organ Music' show was sited. Joining lots of people were sitting along the wall be the water, a rhythmic humming noise was piped through hidden speakers beneath the wall/bench.
But the walk back was a bit long for my rickety skeleton.
The drive was actually fine and the stop in Sibenik was glorious. It's a bit like a lovely, small version of Zadar (plus steep walks to the cathedral and fab restaurant in the church garden) reminding me of bits of Old Kotor).
Another short drive got us to Split, so I'll catch up in a short while about our first evening in Split. A Bolt ride, meal out and walk in the old town to come.
Had a lovely stroll through the VERY touristy old town of Split. As it's supposed to be a good seafood kinda place, I had a fishy meal that I. wouldn't;t normally go for. I shouldn't't have. it was okay. but priced for the tourists. Why do the waiters/esses insist on explaining the provenance, ingredients and cooking methods if everything??
The office for the ferry trip to Hvar tomorrow was closed. So it's back early doors to get the return tickets. Should be a spiffing boat trip and nosey around the island.

    Slunj Take 2

    May 2, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today I had originally planned a long, hard hike up a mountain that sounded really interesting, but neither of us felt up to it this morning (plus when I checked the weather there it said thunderstorms all afternoon, and when I checked in the afternoon sure enough it was stormy there so I was glad we didn’t go), so we decided to head back to Rastoke and see if we could see the waterfall town that was closed on Tuesday. Well…you had to pay 6Euro a person to go in…and it was definitely not worth it. It was tiny, you had great views of the waterfalls from the parking area on the opposite side from where we were the first time for free, and it was just meh. There wasn’t much there.

There was a longer hike along the Korana and Slunjčica Rivers we were going to do that left from Rastoke so after our short wander in there we headed out on those paths. First you wandered through the forest to some viewpoints of the Korana River, then to cross you had to walk in the water along the rock wall which was fun (and we were glad we decided to wear our water shoes today!!) we saw lots of big snails, I thought I heard a snake in the grass and definitely saw the back half of one slithering away, there were lots of frogs making silly noises again, and when we stopped for lunch along the River we even saw a turtle on the opposite bank! And lots of fishes swimming around so it was a fun stop.

The trail then went by the ruins of Napoleon’s grain warehouse and the old castle before going through downtown Slunj which was fun to see. That is all along the Slunjčica River which is so much prettier! That is the River that we went to the spring where it started the other day and the water is just gorgeous. The Korana is nice too, but it doesn’t compare! So a fun day wandering by the water. Tomorrow we head is to Dubrovnik!

    Rastk Slunj

    April 10, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C
