    Zagreb pješice

    Kreuz und quer durch Zagreb! Holunder und Mohn blühen, wir müssen ständig niesen. Mal ist es schick und sehr patriotisch und sie legen Wert darauf, dass Nicola Tesla einer von ihnen sei (tatsächlich gehörte er wohl eher zu den Geschwistern östlich, aber ist das nicht so egal?). Mal ist es malerisch verkommen und an diesem heißen Tag sehr poetisch, Musik dringt aus geöffneten Fenstern, frisch Vermählte stöckeln (sie) bzw. machen Liegestütze vor Kirchen (er!). In einem langen Tunnel, der den Menschen Zagrebs im zweiten Weltkrieg Schutz bot, werden Kinderzeichnungen ausgestellt und der kroatische Grüffelo erlebt einen emotionalen Sturm ("oluja").
    Das k&k-anmutende kroatische Nationaltheater, die schönen Jugendstilhäuser in der Masarykova, die Zunftzeichen an der Handwerkskammer (?). Ein schöner Tag in einer charmanten Stadt.
    Keinen emotionalen Sturm, aber einen ziemlichen Lacher hatten wir beide bei einem der vielen (teilweise wirklich abstrusen) Museen. Gehen wir da so die Straße lang, denken: Was ist denn das?, beide denken kurz nach und dann war klar: DAVOR fotografieren wir uns! Das isses! Das Museum selbst haben wir uns nicht angesehen, der Shop war voll mit fancy Zeug für schick Getrennte.

    Zagreb

    The first evening in Zagreb we tried a local restaurant which had delicious food!! Meat heavy but no complaints there from me :). The following day we did some sight seeing with the city history museum, chocolate museum which was delightfully fun, and the botanical garden. The next day we rented a car and drove to Rijenka by the coast to see the sea side and dip in the cold waters!! (The speed limit on the highway was 130km/h!!!) The walk along the coast was very nice. The last day we discovered another part of town through old WW2 tunnels that led to a restaurant and bar area. Definitely more touristic but quite fun and charming!!Read more

    Graz

    Die Fahrkartenverkäuferin hat uns nach langem hin und her doch davon überzeugt nur einmal umzusteigen und dafür aber um 6:22 Uhr in der Früh zu starten ( wir hatten eine Verbindung zwei Stunden später mit zweimal umsteigen.. )
    Diesmal sind wir mit dem Taxi zum Bahnhof - der Bummelzug brachte uns in vier Stunden nach Szombately mit vier Fahrkartenkontrollen … und dort mussten wir zum ersten Mal warten - 20 Minuten nur. Wir sind bei Sonnenschein in Graz angekommen und entscheiden uns gleich nach Premstätten zum Skulpturenpark zu fahren, mit dem Bus ca. 35 Minuten außerhalb von Graz.
    Der Park ist 2000 vom Schweizer Landschaftsarchitekten Dieter Kienast gestaltet. Seit 2007 gibt es hier den Park mit Skulpturen - sehr sehenswert!!    Read more

    Fjaka lifestyle

    This trip was so much fun. I learned so much about Croatia and the fjaka lifestyle of taking things slow. I have to say I enjoyed taking things slow until every waiter decided to participate as well..... Anyway, I decided to keep notes while I was there so I'm just going to list some of my favorite things I learned and did!

    1. Water is free again! In Italy they never bring water to your table unless you order it. In Croatia I got water brought to me with everything including just a coffee!!

    2. The best thing to eat in Croatia is a cruffin. Croissant shaped like a muffin with cream in the middle. It was AMAZING

    3. There are heart souvenirs all over Croatia and Zagreb. They all have mirrors on the center of them. They are meant to be given to someone you love because when you give them your heart, they see what you love inside of the heart.

    4. They fire a canon at noon everyday right before the church bells go off around the city. This has been a tradition since 1877. The legend is that when Croatia was at war with the Ottomans, Zagreb was never invaded. They were unable to defend themselves against the Ottomans because they were poor and out of resources. They had one chicken left in the whole city which they used to trick the Ottomans. They shot the chicken out of a canon, and it landed on the plate of the Ottoman emperor. This made the Ottomans think they had so much food that they were tossing it away. The Ottomans feared their wealth and power and never tried to invade Zagreb.

    5. Saturdays are the days to show off all the money that you don't have. Everyone dresses up and goes out to shop at markets and eat at restaurants.

    6. The markets in Zagreb all have red umbrellas. The legend of why they're all red is that they used to be grey. A boy and a girl fell in love and kissed under one of the umbrellas and turned it red. Now all of the umbrellas in the city are red.    Read more

    ZAGREB!!!!!!

    FIRST DAY IN ZAGREB! This city is WILDDDDD! I love it so much I have never seen anything like it and also never heard much about it. I don’t know how it’s not on the most recommended cities in Europe list. The food has been AMAZING! The people are also so awesome. Here’s some highlights of the day. We went to the museum of broken relationships. It was sad and funny but so interesting and one of my favorite museums ever. We walked around and explored and ate some yummy Sri Lankan food. The parks here are also so cool and it’s been awesome to see all this green!Read more

    Zagreb

    Travelled to Zagreb this morning (about 2.5 hours by train). Nestled below Mt Medvednica, Croatia’s thriving capital is an exciting winter destination. A month-long Advent festival transforms the city into an illuminated winter wonderland, complete with acres of fairy-lights, huge Christmas trees, nativity scenes, temporary ice rinks, mulled wine stalls and igloo-shaped rakija (a potent local drop) bars. The Christmas market here is considered among the best in Europe. Arrived, dumped our bags and we were back out walking the streets. Maare took us to a traditional lunch and then an expert gave us a walking tour. We finished with a beautiful dinner at a very special restaurant.

    Day 17

    Day 17 – Hvar/Stari Grad/Soline Beach

    Today we biked from the hotel after breakfast. Our ride today was noted as the toughest climb but the reward at the top would be worth it. I agree, it was a long climb of 10 – 12 KM up but the slope wasn’t that bad. We had a beautiful day for this ride. In fact, the weather for the entire week has been wonderful. The only day of rain was during the night, and we had to just delay a start while the roads dried off slightly.
    Today we were treated to beautiful views of mountains, olive gardens, stone walls and very old churches and cemeteries. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stari Grad Plain. We were told that the area hasn’t changed in the past 2,000 years.
    When we reached the top of the climb there was a stand that they were selling cycling jerseys. This was a very popular stop for cyclists and of course, I couldn’t resist a lavender cycling jersey. We had a picture with all the ladies wearing these jerseys and then the few men who purchased Croatian jerseys.
    From there we still had over 20 KM to travel down and some more ups until we reached the sea. We rode through seaside village of Vrboska where some stopped for coffee, but Bob and I continued so that he didn’t need to torture his knee anymore when he would restart after the rests.
    Our ride ended at Soline Beach where the VBT ride leaders prepared a fantastic picnic of salads, local cheeses and meats, breads and sweets. It was a perfect day and the one day we really should have brought our bathing suits and towels to enjoy the sea.
    We were then shuttled back to the hotel for the afternoon of wondering around and watching more of the Spartan races.
    Tonight, we had a group dinner in the hotel. The meal was delicious, and it was nice to say goodbye to everyone. Our leaders will be leaving before we do in the morning, so a chance to say thank you to them as well.
    Tomorrow, we have a short walk to the boat where we take a three-hour boat ride to Dubrovnik. Bob and I will say goodbye to not only the bike group but also to Janet, Gary, Sharon and Steve as we will be heading home on Monday morning.
    Thank you for following along on our journey. We have never done a Bike Vermont Tour (VBT), but fairly sure it won’t be our last one. The tour was very well organized with lots of time to stop and travel at your own pace. They provided everyone with Ride with GPS, so the routes were there for you to follow and we never got lost!     Zagreb + Rastoke Wasserfälle

    Man liebt es oder man hasst es. Ein Stadtrundgang durch Zagreb, Kroatiens Hauptstadt, steht an. Peter ist schlecht gelaunt. Also wollen wir diese Pflichtaufgabe schnellstmöglich hinter uns bringen.

    Aufgrund ihrer Größe ist die Stadt Zagreb recht überschaubar und die meisten Sehenswürdigkeiten erreichen wir bequem zu Fuss. Wir starten unseren Stadtrundgang am Hotel. Zunächst bewundern wir den Kunstpavillon und passieren den Zrinjevac Park. Und schon sind wir am Ban-Jelacic-Platz. Es ist der zentrale Treffpunkt in der kroatischen Hauptstadt und soll eine Sehenswürdigkeit sein. Das können wir allerdings nicht bestätigen. Auf dem Marktplatz beobachten wir das Großstadtleben und können nicht nachvollziehen, warum sich so viele Menschen hier aufhalten. Gefühlt laufen hier schon mindestens 10.000 Chinesen herum. 

    Von hier aus ist die Kathedrale von Zagreb leicht zu Fuß zu erreichen. Weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten sind Banal-Hof, kroatisches Parlamentsgebäude, Botanischer Garten, die Seilbahn und der Maksimir Park.
    Wir schaffen die Stadtbesichtigung schneller als geplant. Von uns bekommt Zagreb keine Empfehlung. Wahrscheinlich aber gibt es Stadtliebhaber, die daß ganz anders sehen. Jedenfalls sind wir überglücklich, als wir endlich die Stadtgrenze erreichen. Jetzt ändert sich Peter’s Laune schlagartig zum Besseren. 

    Wir haben Zeit gewonnen. Also suchen wir ein Ziel und finden die Rastoke Wasserfälle. Obwohl dieser Fluss nur 6,5 km lang ist, hat er eine der spektakulärsten Landschaften in Kroatien geschaffen. Sein Zufluss in den Fluss Korana wird von 23 natürlichen Wasserfällen und einer Vielzahl von Stromschnellen begleitet. Wir sind begeistert und genießen dieses Naturspektakel.

    Da wir die nächsten 4 Nächte in unserer neuen Ferienwohnung verbringen werden, kaufen wir Vorräte für die nächsten Tage ein.

    Ziemlich erschöpft erreichen wir unser neues Domizil.

    Zagreb + Burg Medvedgrad

    Mit Regen verließen wir heute Österreich. Bei so einem Sauwetter sieht selbst dieses Land nicht mehr so toll aus.
    Schon bald erreichten wir Slowenien. Inzwischen hatte es aufgehört zu regnen, die Sonne ließ sich hier und da schon sehen. Von überall her winkten uns die schönsten Burgen, Klöster und Herrenhäuser zu. Dieses kleine Land haben wir in 2019 bereits besucht. Noch immer haben wir es als eines der schönsten Länder Europas im Gedächtnis.
    Und Kroatien erwartete uns bereits mit sonnigen Wetter. In Zagreb fahren wir sofort hinauf zur Burg Medvedgrad. Vom Parkplatz ist ein etwa 850 m langer steiler Hin- und Rückweg zu bewältigen. Es ist eine kleine, aber sehr schön renovierte und gestaltete Burgruine. Innen ist sie komplett modernisiert und digitalisiert, außen im Original erhalten. Ein Besuch lohnt sich, da jeder Raum und jeder Gang mit Informationen aus allen Epochen der Burg ausgestattet ist. Und dann dieser Blick über Zagreb und die angrenzenden Wälder, wirklich super.
    Die Stunden waren verflogen. Als wir die Burg verlassen wollten, war das Eingangstor bereits mit einer Kette verschlossen. Da war aber Not am Mann.🤔🥴Hatte man uns hier vergessen? Die Sonne ging schon langsam unter und es wurde bereits kälter. Sollten wir tatsächlich hier in Kroatien erfrieren? Wir suchten und wir fanden glücklicherweise unsere Retterin, die uns erlöste 🤔🥴🤣
    Die glückliche Wendung unseres vermeintlichen Schicksals wollten wir feiern. Wir fuhren in die Stadtmitte, parkten unser Auto in einem Parkhaus und suchten uns ein feines Restaurant. Und dieses Lokal hielt, was es versprach: egal ob Suppe, Hauptgericht oder Wein, jeder Gang war ein Genuß.😋😋😋 Ausnahmsweise hatten wir wirklich nichts zu meckern. Erst nach Erhalt der Rechung kippte die Stimmung ein wenig. Für den Preis hätten wir in Tschechien tatsächlich viermal ausessen gehen können. Aber man gönnt sich ja sonst nichts😁😄
    Die lange Fahrt und der Besuch der Burg waren anstrengend. Die vollen Mägen schafften uns nun endgültig. Wir fuhren auf direktem Weg zu unserem Hotel für die kommende Nacht, checkten ein, schauten noch ein Football Spiel und fielen glücklich in den Schlaf☺️

    Tunnel Gric, Zagreb

    To return home we made our way to the Art Park (although there was not much art there) to the entrance of the Grič Tunnel. The Grič Tunnel is a pedestrian tunnel located in the centre of the city and consists of a central hall, which is connected by two passageways to the west and the east, and four passageways extending to the south. It was built during World War II to serve both as a bomb shelter and a promenade but following the war it quickly fell into disrepair and disuse. The tunnel saw renewed use only in the 1990s, hosting one of the first raves in Croatia, and functioning as a shelter during the Croatian War of Independence. In 2016, the tunnel was remodeled and opened to the public, serving as a tourist attraction and hosting cultural events. Planned expansions include a museum and a lift but as yet nothing has progressed. While it is just a tunnel, it was a handy shortcut and the lighting and curves made it interesting to photograph.Read more
