    Chamery statt Reims

    Ursprünglich wollten wir in Reims auf einem von der Stadt empfohlenen Platz übernachten. Das scheiterte allerdings an einer fehlenden Umweltplakette (kostet bis 135 Euro) und an dem Umstand, dass gerade heute Reims Heimspiel hat und daher der Platz für die Fußballfans benötigt wird.
    Nicht tragisch. Jetzt sind wir in inmitten von Champagnerkellern in Chamery und lassen den Tag bei einem Ricard und einem Reisgericht ausklingen. Zumindest Sonntag ist hier nichts los    Read more

    Kultur-Stopp in der Champagne

    Am Sonntag fahren wir bis zu einem Campingplatz kurz vor Reims. Wir kommen am frühen Nachmittag an und nutzen die Zeit unser Wohnei richtig einzurichten. Das heißt: Wir finden jeden Hohlraum und jedes Loch, wo wir was reinstopfen können.

    Am Montag starten wir zum Kultur-Ausflug. Gleich bei der Einfahrt nach Reims, schnell und unverhofft, landen wir im Chateau Pommery, wo auch unmittelbar die Führung durch die in 30 m Tiefe gelegenen Champagner-Keller beginnt. Wir bekommen wahre Schätze von sehr alten Flaschen in allen Größen und mit dicker Staubsschicht bedeckt, zu sehen. Die Luft in den Kellern wirkt sehr anregend und mit dem Glas zum Abschluss wird die weitere Stadtbesichtigung leichtfüßig und fröhlich.    Read more

    Reims, France - Day trip!

    Wonderful Mother’s Day. Bought a frog memorabilia at a Rummage sale outside our hotel in Montmartre and day trip to, Reims, the champagne capital of the world. Ending with another wonderful flambéed dinner before the 45 minute train back to Paris.Read more

    South Reims

    When I left home at 09.15 this morning the temperature was 9c. The journey to the euro tunnel train was as expected. Busy and the roads are typical of England these days with plenty of pot holes even on motorways.
    In contrast the beautiful almost empty roads of France are a delight to ride down.
    I'm just south of Reims in a Campanile hotel.
    While waiting for the train in England I met two bikers who had ridden from North Wales. Amazing coincidence, first they stopped at the same service station on the motorway and I never saw them on the road and now they have just parked the bikes next to mine at the hotel.
    Tomorrow is a long ride to lake Constance in Germany near the Swiss border.    Read more

    Anreise - 1. Tag

    Im strömenden Regen fuhren wir los. Aber es wurde von Stunde zu Stunde schöner, die Wolken lösten sich auf und wir erlebten zum ersten Mal seit Wochen die Sonne für mehrere Stunden in ihrer ganzen Pracht.
    Unser erstes Picknick machten wir kurz hinter Reims. Selbstgebratene Frikadellen und vorgeschmierte Butterbrote, lecker👍
    Wir fuhren quer durch die "Champagne" und überquerten die Loire. Sofort erinnerten wir uns an die großartigen Erlebnisse, die wir hier im letzten Jahr erfahren durften.
    Nach 9 Stunden Fahrt quartierten wir uns für die kommende Nacht in Vierzon ein. Ein süßes kleines Hotel, super sauber und mit 39 € sehr preisgünstig.
    Obwohl wir sehr vorsichtig gefahren sind, wurden wir dennoch von einem Blitzer wie vom Blitz getroffen. Das sind die unvermeidlichen Reisezusatzkosten. Ärgerlich, aber fast nicht zu vermeiden🤔🥴    Read more

    Unbekanntes Spanien - Start

    Für Inka war das noch ein Arbeitstag, also ging es erst gegen 16:30 Uhr los.
    Diesmal wollen wir Frankreich möglichst mautfrei durchqueren, mal sehen wie das läuft. Aber erst einmal geht es durch Luxemburg, wo der Diesel auch nicht mehr besonders günstig ist und durch Südbelgien.
    Der erste Übernachtungsplatz ist ein kleiner Parkplatz an einem Yachthafen bei Reims. Das reicht für heute.

    Day 25 - Reims to Trepail

    Obviously, the Cathedral in Reims is a highlight. But a walk through Basilique Saint Remi is also worth the visit. The VF path going out of Reims was along the canal (12 km worth). It's a very nice way to leave an urban area, though a little hard on the feet as it's all paved. Believe it or not, those water pumps work. All you have to do is rotate the brass handle at the top. I saw signs of commerce with what looked like wheat being loaded onto a barge. After the canal walk, I moved into farmland for a while and then onto the vineyards. I saw a few names I recognised. The day ended with a mixture of forest and vineyard walking. It looks like the French forestry department takes a similar approach to our Australian ones - take out whatever you can get (sustainably, of course 😉). I saw a little snake today. It looked sluggish and probably could have used some sun (no complaints from me, I got a good lot of sun this morning). I met my first walking pilgrim on the path this afternoon. A Brit, who sleeps 'wild' as he calls it. It seems to me that those with a tent are much better served and have a lot more options than those of us who are relying on hotels, etc., on the VF. The highlight of my day, though, was a WhatsApp call from my girls - I was so happy to see them 💗 ☺️ 💕 😊.Read more

    Day 24 - Hermonville to Reims

    The overcast day started with forest walking - fabulous. I shared the path with joggers, their dogs, cyclists, dirt bikes, quad bikes and one hiker (pilgrim status: unlikely - we had no common language and he had what appeared to be a day pack, with poles). The going was slow, with all the lefting and righting to find the best path through the puddles. The day ended with a lovely canal walk (Canal de l'Aisne a la Marne) into Reims. My accommodation crisis was solved by the tourist office (luckily, they were open on a Sunday), who managed to get me accommodation for tomorrow night. I had been unable to obtain accommodation for the next two nights and this way, I walk a little longer tomorrow and divert from the path for the following day - but it gets me where I need to be in two days time. I got a pilgrim stamp at the Cathedral in Reims and met an Australian pilgrim there; Sue, from Queensland. I did have a brut champagne last night at the Pizza place (I felt too daggy to try the French restaurant), and the hotel I'm in now has a vending machine where I have a choice of two champagnes (€40 or €50) however, I had my beer at the Earnest Hemingway Cafe and that will do me. Oh, and I broke Find Penguins tonight by trying to upload 11 photos. The only way I could get the app to work was to buy a premium membership - beware. P.S. those spots in that pond are frogs, it was magic to hear the croaking.Read more

    Rheims

    Dreich day here - the rain caught up with me- although the worst of it was before and after. 70k of cycling feels ( and should be) a rest day, so time to have a brief "degustation " of the fizzy stuff on the way through Epernay. Washing it down with the French equivalent of a sausage roll arguably was a bit insulting. Either way, after a glass of fizz everything went a bit pear shaped: my cycle computer stopped route finding for me, the rain started and then I had a hill! Haven't seen one of those since the Pyrenees!! Unfortunately it spat me out on to a busy A road in foggy wet conditions: not nice cycling. Was that my "champagne moment"? A laborious detour allowed me to experience the industrial estates on the outskirts of Rheims.😞 I'd started to question my decision to take this more urban route, but after a visit to the amazing Pommery champagne cellars- and the even more amazing -and huge- Rheims cathedral, it all seemed to make sense. First puncture today - notice the hissing at the doorstep of the hotel. Quick bit of glass removal and tubeless shoogling seems to have it fixed🤞Read more
