    18. Luxembourg - Baden Baden

    We woke up to quite possibly our rainiest day yet and that means it's really rainy with the weather we have had so far.. 😂☔

    We decided to head to Luxembourg city to take a look but unfortunately all the parking was a nightmare... After 3 drives around the city attempting to park and then going down a road definitely not designed for a van, we decided to move on as we weren't desperate enough to go to a park and ride into the city. It was still very pretty even in the rain.

    We then decided to slowly meander down to Baden-Baden, which is the start of Germany's Black Forest.
    This route (half motorways) took us through France and Germany on the way down. We arrived just as the sun set in the distance and made camp at a local park up. The next few days we are slowly driving down towards Switzerland, 40 miles of the route is supposedly one of the best roads in Europe to drive so we are looking forward to the adventures to come.

    We took Maddy on a walk through the woods with many signs about the aggressive Wildschwein, (wild boar) They would be with us as we have a got a German frankfurter sausage risotto for tea. We have no instructions on how you cook the sausages and no signal so we are going to attempt to boil them... If no penguins uploaded tomorrow we have both died peacefully of food poisoning or attacked brutally by a wildschwein 😂😂    Read more

    Von Forbach bis zum Ochsenstall

    Heute 22km.

    Guten Abend. Dies war ein sehr kalt-nasser, windig-boeiger Tag mit vielen Steigungen. Er endet gut (wie immer) im Ski- und Wanderheim Ochsenstall an ner warmen Heizung und Gulasch mit Späzle.
    Gestern bin ich zunächst die Horizontale Baden-Baden/Stuttgart gekreuzt. Zudem habe ich nach 21.5km noch die 2700km überschritten. Es geht voran. Trotz Herbst.
    Heute an Happy Hello-Wien noch die Diagonale Baden-Baden/ Calw.
    Im Ochsenstall bin ich home-alone aber nicht wie Kevin sondern wohl behalten in mollig-warmem Zimmer, was auf 1030m ü. N. und bei 3° Aussentemperatur durchaus hilfreich ist. Morgen soll es dann bis zum Spätnachmittag trocken bleiben. Da bin ich dabei! Morgen Abend bin ich noch zum Essen verabredet. Hoch oben im Schwarzwald. Wer der glückliche ist, erfahrt ihr Morgen.

    Vom Dobeler Rössle bis nach Forbach

    Heute 26km

    Ich bin nach sehr guter Nacht und vor allem, reichhaltigem Frühstück in einen sonnigen Morgen aufgebrochen nachdem es in der Vornacht so schwer geregnet hatte. Unterwegs habe ich dann das Pärchen vom Vortag wieder angetroffen: Sofie und Jelle. Beide kommen aus Belgien und sind am liebsten outdoors, gerne auch in winterlichen Jahreszeiten..und sie mögen am liebsten Camping im Zelt. Zwei sehr sympathische Menschen und die ersten Wanderer seit heute 2700km, mit denen ich einige Stunden gelaufen bin und die die gleiche Richtung haben. Sie werden bis Donnerstag wandern und müssen dann wieder nach Gent in Belgien zurück. Sie sind weit gereiste Leute und sind, wie ich es verstanden habe, in Europa immer zu Fuss unterwegs. Was für eine Freiheit!!
    Vielleicht nehmt ihr , liebe Leser es wahr: Die eigentliche Freiheit liegt in dem täglichen: Wohin muss ich, wo kriege ich Wasser, Essen, Wärme, Regenschutz und Wetterschutz. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Das ist das ganze Geheimnis. Und das wollte ich hier mal kurz anmerken. Das ist Wandern. Und das macht den Kopf so frei.
    Heute im Frühstücksraum habe ich bemerkt: Es sind noch viele auf dem Westweg unterwegs, eine ganze Schweizer Gruppe und etliche Pärchen und Einzelreisende. Das gibt mir Zuversicht: Der Westweg ist auch in dieser Jahreszeit noch gut wanderbar. Ich habe für Morgen im Ochsenstall reserviert und gehe dann von dort weiter.     Jugi Pforzheim bis Zum Rössle in Dobel

    Heute 25.5km

    Guten Abend. Ich habe heute grosses Glück gehabt. Die meiste Zeit des Tages war es trocken trotz wilder Wolken am Himmel. Ich bin sehr schnell durchgekommen und hatte mir im 'Rössle' ein Zimmer gebucht und jetzt regnet's wie hulle und ich sitze im trocknen. Ich traue mich jetzt, das zu geniessen!
    Nach einer feinen Nacht in der Jugi bin ich brav um 7 erwacht. Nur war 7 heute 6 und ich konnte nicht nochmals einschlafen. Bin ich also herumgelegen bis ich um halb8 zum Frühstück konnte. Los noch im leichten Regen und es nieselte immer wieder aber das wurde zusehends weniger und der Schirm verlor seine Haupt-Daseinsberechtigung. Ich habe dann einen netten Mann kennen gelernt der in der Gegenrichtung unterwegs war. Er sei 3 Tage am Wandern auf dem Westweg nach Norden. Er beklagte sich, dass es nach seinem Aufbruch um 8uhr am Morgen pausenlos geschüttet habe. Mitleid vortäuschend, " Ich bedauere sehr, dass.." usw.usf. , wallte in mir eine gewisse Genugtuung auf, dass ich erst um 9:00 - und dann vor allem von der anderen Seite aufgebrochen war und sehr wenig vom Wasser von Oben behelligt wurde. Später habe ich noch ein nettes belgisches Pärchen getroffen, die am Wegrand rasteten und in meiner Richtung 5 Tage unterwegs sind. Sie schlafen ausschliesslich im Zelt. Ich habe ihnen für Heute Nacht die Nutzung einer Schu-Hü empfohlen. Hoffentlich haben sie es gemacht. Jetzt hol ich mir noch einen Flammkuchen aus der Gasthausküche und wünsche Euch Allen schon mal einen gemütlichen Abend!    Read more

    Von der Grünen Hütte zur Jugi Pforzheim

    Heute 33km

    Heute fasse ich mich kurz.
    Gerannt bin ich fast, um die trockensten Momente des Tages auszunutzen und noch rechtzeitig zum Abendbrot in Pforzheim zu sein. Mittag habe ich im Al Natura-Bistro in Langensteinach gegessen. Das ist immer nett. Kaffeepulver, Tütensuppen, Studentenfutter- und Müsliwiederauffüllerung ebenda. Nebenan gab's im Baumarkt noch ne Ersatzkartusche mit Campinggaz da ich wohl an keinem Outdoor-Geschäft mehr vorbei komme bis Konstanz..und danach lohnt es weniger. Heute wieder leicht mehr Steigungen aber richtig los geht's dann ja erst Morgen mit dem Westweg. In der Schweiz ist Morgen bei Föhn Sonne und 22° angesagt, hier Dauerregen. Ich würde also tauschen, Interessenten bitte melden!
    Jetzt liege ich pappsatt im Bettchen und freue mich auf die Extra Schlafstunde heute Nacht.. Morgen wird's dann entsprechend schon ab halb 6 dunkel..Mal schauen, wie sich das dann auf meine Tagesplanungen auswirkt.Ich wünsche uns allen erholsamen Schlaf und Wecker stellen nicht vergessen (im Winter stellt man die Bank zurück in den Keller...)     Day 9

    Coffee with a View & Castles

    After the opulence of the Kurhaus, we wandered over to the nearby Trinkhalle and Kurhaus Kolonnaden—a stretch of beautiful arcades with fountains, historic architecture, and a laid-back vibe. There we grabbed an ice cream and a coffee, just soaking in the calm elegance of the place.

    Refueled, we headed back to the hotel and hopped in the car to check out the Neues Schloss, perched just above Baden-Baden. Sadly, it was a bit of a letdown—closed for renovations and looking more abandoned than under active restoration. At least the terrace view over the city helped soften the blow.

    From there, we made our way to the real star of the afternoon: the Altes Schloss zu Hohenbaden, the castle ruin that’s been dramatically looming over Baden-Baden all along.

    We started by hiking through the ruins to the Ritterplatte, a jagged rock formation just above the castle. The views were absolutely breathtaking—green valleys, distant hills, the entire town below. I couldn’t resist jumping over a few gaps to get as close to the edge (safely!) as possible. And there, in true coffee-lover fashion, I pulled out my AeroPress and brewed a cup of locally roasted coffee. Sitting up there with fresh coffee and that view? Pure luxury.

    After that perfect moment, Sanjay and I headed back down to explore the castle ruins themselves. The place is full of hidden staircases, winding paths, crumbling towers, and windows that frame the landscape like paintings. We climbed higher and higher until we reached the highest view tower—absolutely worth it. The whole experience felt like stepping back in time.

    Back down in town, we wrapped up the day at M10, a cozy spot with local flavor. We shared a cold cut platter full of regional delicacies, followed by a mixed Maultaschen platter—comfort food at its finest. Paired with a glass of Badener Rosé and Pinot Gris, it was the perfect way to toast our last evening in Baden-Baden.    Read more

    Day 9

    Mountain Views & a Touch of Glamour

    April 4 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    After a few full days on the go, we allowed ourselves a slow start—sleeping in just a bit, then heading out for a sweet and quiet breakfast at Boecklers Confiserie. With fresh pastries and strong coffee in hand, we eased into the day the right way.

    From there, we took a leisurely stroll through the city back to the hotel, soaking in the spring air and still slightly stunned by how beautiful Baden-Baden is.

    Next up: a little adventure. We hopped in the car and drove to the base station of the Merkur funicular—a steep little ride up to the top of Mount Merkur, with postcard-worthy views all the way.

    Once at the top, we wandered around a bit and, by luck, found the view tower door unlocked. Naturally, we couldn’t resist heading up. And wow—what a view! The whole Baden-Baden valley stretched out beneath us, bathed in sunshine. The weather was absolutely perfect.

    After taking it all in (and doing a bit of sunbathing at the base of the tower like true pros), we rode the funicular back down and headed to the hotel to change into our casino-appropriate attire—because yes, this day was only getting fancier.

    At 1 PM, we joined a guided tour through the historic Kurhaus and Casino, and let’s just say: the opulence is next-level. Chandeliers, velvet, gold detailing everywhere—it’s easy to see why this place is legendary.

    Fun fact from the tour: the casino brings in around 35 million euros in profit each year, and thanks to Germany’s strict gambling laws, that money is reinvested into the community. Gotta love that.

    Day 8

    Delays, Detours, and Maultaschen

    April 3 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    As promised—a new chapter in this trip kicked off today with Sanjay’s arrival!

    After a quick breakfast and check-out, I moved my luggage to the hotel next door, Aqua Aurelia, where we’d be staying for the next part of the journey. Then it was time to hit the road: Karl, legend that he is, drove me to Frankfurt, where I picked up our rental car. Bonus: we got a free upgrade, which felt like a good omen for the days ahead.

    From there, I headed to Frankfurt Airport to meet Sanjay… except his flight was delayed by two hours. Classic travel chaos. While waiting, I discovered that the Frankfurt airport parkade is an actual disaster (seriously, who designed that mess?) I passed the time with a much-needed cup of coffee and some excellent people-watching in the departure hall.

    And then—finally—Sanjay arrived! A quick reunion hug, a deep breath, and we were on the road again, back to Baden-Baden. What should’ve been a two-hour drive turned into almost four thanks to traffic jams and endless construction zones.

    When we finally made it, we checked into Aqua Aurelia and went on a short sightseeing walk—partly to give Sanjay a first glimpse of Baden-Baden, partly to keep him awake and ward off the jet lag.

    We wrapped up the day with dinner at Le Bistro, where Sanjay tried his very first Maultaschen (a proper introduction to Swabian comfort food) after starting with a local Wurstsalat. I went for the Wald und Wiesen Pfännchen—game and veal meatballs with potato purée and a rich, lingonberry-spiked gravy. Glorious.    Read more

    Day 7

    Magnolias and Asparagus

    April 2 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

    Another early start in Baden-Baden—breakfast at the hotel, and the buffet turned out to be surprisingly solid (always a nice surprise).

    The rest of the day followed a now-familiar and very welcome rhythm: a stroll through town, lots of time with Jule, and plenty of moments spent just soaking up the sunshine and the explosion of magnolia blossoms everywhere. It’s hard not to fall a little bit in love with this town when it looks and smells like spring perfection.

    For dinner, we made our way back to Leo’s. And—surprise!—the menu had changed since our last visit. It’s officially Spargelzeit—white asparagus season! Every year from April through June, Germany goes wild for it, and restaurants across the country roll out seasonal menus to celebrate.

    We shared a white and green asparagus salad with Pata Negra, which was an absolute hit. I followed it up with a classic: schnitzel and potato salad—a fitting, comforting finish to the day.

    Day 6

    A Lovely Day in Baden-Baden

    April 1 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

    Not every day on a trip has to be packed with big adventures—some are just about enjoying the moment.

    I woke up early and started the day with breakfast at the hotel, followed by a quiet morning stroll through town. Baden-Baden is the kind of place that’s perfect for aimless wandering, with its elegant streets, historic buildings, and that ever-present feeling of old-world charm.

    The rest of the day was all about hanging out with Jule, catching up, and simply enjoying the atmosphere. We wandered through the downtown area, taking in the grand architecture that make this town feel so unique.

    For dinner, we went to Le Bistro, a spot where the local cuisine is infused with French influences—no surprise, given how close we are to the border. The chef is a passionate hunter, so the menu has plenty of game dishes. I went for the game sausage with fried potatoe-endive salad, paired with a beautiful Baden rosé. And honestly? Divine.
