Jugi Tholey bis nach St. Wendel

    October 17, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

    Heute 33km

    And that's something, isn't it.
Genau. Morgen!
    Buona Serra.

    Pirmasens

    August 26, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today was a pretty chill day. In the morning, we drove 15 minutes to Pirmasens which is my Pop’s hometown. He lived here until he moved to Australia after the war.

We went with Eva, Michael and Levi to the big German/French market that is held once a month. The inner stalls were French and the outer were German. We walked around looking at all the produce and enjoyed some live buskers 🎶

Afterwards I got a pedicure at a little salon nearby, while the others explored the streets of Pirmasens. We finished with a bratwurst from the stall in the market (apparently dad loved these from Pirmasens when he came as a teenager hehe) like father like daughter 🤪🌭

Home for a relaxed afternoon. Jacques and I both went running, I didn’t get too far but did manage to do a few big hills. JA did 8km, he’s been really good sticking to his running program ready for the cricket season when we return 🏃‍♂️

Finished our day with Frank’s homemade pizzas. These were delicious. He made the dough so thin and crispy. Enjoyed some amazing French wine with the pizza🍷
We spent a couple of hours looking through old photo albums belonging to Trud (Nan’s sister) which included her trip to Australia, photos of Dad and Ray as kids, our family and Nan & Pop’s trips to Germany. Loved this!

    Rückflucht 5, Deutschland bei Saarbrü

    March 23, 2020 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

    480 km gefahrern

We drives across a bit of Austria, crikey that Inssbruck is a big place. We pass rivers with water that's an opaque Aqua colour, very strange, un stops for lunch at Bibeweir, by the lake, with a beautiful back drop of Mountains. Then it's on to the countryside for our stop at Altusried in Germany, about time too that's 3 counties in one day I'm knackered.

    Bärenhöhle

    September 3, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Today was a chill day! Little sleep in after getting home from the soccer around midnight 😴

Next, Margit and I made “damfknudel”, a traditional German yeast dumpling. I have grown up eating these as Nan makes them, but it was really fun to see how they are cooked! She taught me all the tricks. Lots of time needed for the proving of the dough at each stage and they double in size. We steamed them in the pan and then a couple more minutes to crisp the bottom 🥟

Frank made veggie soup and vanilla custard to have with the damfknudel, although I actually like them with nothing on them! They are sooo fluffy and delicious fresh. Eva, Michael and Levi came for lunch too 🥰

Afterwards we went for a much needed long walk in the forest and to a place called Bärenhöhle, which are two huge natural rock formations with caves underneath them and little waterfall. This was fun and really nice to be in nature. Levi found a mud bath and enjoyed splashing around in this 🤪 and also insisted that Jacques carry him on the way back 😂

Back home for a relaxed arvo, followed by a sparkling wine on the veranda to celebrate Eva’s last day of holidays before back to school 🥂 Jacques enjoyed 3 different types of sauce on his sausage which Margit thought was hilarious 🤣

    Rodalben

    August 31, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This morning I went for a run in the forest which was a nice way to start the day! At 9am, Frank drove me into town to my hair appointment at a salon called Andrea’s. We did some research and they use the same colours as my hairdresser back home. Wowee 6 hours later I was ready 😂 the whole family thought it was hilarious that it took so long. The girl did a good job but was very slow paced.

Jacques went with Margit, Walter & Frank to Klaus + Trudi’s house for lunch. I was sad I missed out on this but they saved me some delicious goulash and dumplings 🤤

The afternoon was pretty wet so relaxed for most of it. Cheese platter for dinner followed by playing some cards with Margit and Frank, we taught them the game 7’s, they both liked it 🃏

    Homburg

    August 21, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

📍 Schlossberghöhlen Homburg- we met Eva, Michael and Levi at these cool underground sand caves. Levi insisted on wearing his koala t shirt even though it’s very big saying “I want to wear it for Mathilde” haha very cute

They were built in the 17th century and were used by the French when they occupied this area for food and ammunition storage. Later the Germans would use this as bunkers in WWII.

📍 Valentins Biergarten- we stopped here on the way back from the caves for a snack and a drink. Bratwurst and beers are the norm now 😂 this time with a side of salad. Cute little beer garden with a playground, bike track and picnic tables. Levi played in the playground for an hour whilst we drank our steins.

We spent the afternoon relaxing and playing in the pool with Levi. Margit was offering the full German hospitality with some hand delivered beers to the pool 😂 Levi had fun squirting everyone with the water pistol & playing “tennis” with Jacques!

Typical German dinner with Leberknoedel (like meatballs), sauerkraut, saumagen (like pork terrine served hot with potato pieces inside), Bratwurst and delicious jus that Frank made. After dinner, Margit got out the huge communal stein and filled it with beer, we all had to take a drink from it 😂

A really nice sunny day with the 🇩🇪 fam.

    Eva’s House

    August 20, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Jacques woke up with a sore head this morning after the Rodalben festival with Frank 🤕 😂

📍 Frank took me for a walk through the forest near Rodalben, it took about 5 minutes uphill from the house to get to the forest. Really pretty views of Rodalben from the top. He explained the track goes the whole way around the town in a circle, 42km in total and there is a marathon once a year.

📍 Drink stop @ a pub in the forest! Apparently this was one of Pop’s favourite spots. This was so cool! Hidden amongst the trees on a hill. Frank explained there’s several of them in the area and they are ran by all volunteers, similar set up to the German Club in Morwell. Want to bring Jacques back here before we leave!

📍 Home for a relax before heading to Eva’s house in for the afternoon. Straight away I recognised the house when I saw the Australian flag out the front 🤣

We met all Eva’s friends and saw her best friend Eva again who visited Australia with her in 2008. We had cocktails and their famous flammenkuchan which is the French version of pizza with sort of like a pastry base. Because they are so close to the French border all the ingredients are easy to get. Michael cooked them in the wood fire pizza oven, so yum 🤤

We spent the rest of the afternoon drinking Eva’s cocktails, listening to an Aussie playlist and Jacques swam in the pool with Levi which was funny to watch. Michael talked to me about some interesting history behind the Americans who still occupy several parts of Germany after WW2 for military purposes. At around 5pm, the ice cream van went past (like Mr Whippy) and Levi heard it before anyone else 😂 he ran straight out the front yelling “ein chocolate eis” which means one chocolate ice cream, this was so funny. We also went for a quick walk with Levi down the road to show us the animal shelter 🐐

    Beautiful day with everybody! ❤️
