    1 Stopp: Mainz

    May 6 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Ja was soll ich sagen. Guet Nacht.Read more

    Weisbaden

    December 17, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

We flew with Brooke and Bryce from DTW to Frankfurt. Picked up our car that I had booked for the day after not the day of arrival. Charged us extra money and we were on our way. We went to downtown Frankfurt for a little bit of shopping and Bryce to buy a winter coat. From Frankfurt, we drove to Weisbaden. We stayed at the oldest hotel in the world built in 1486 it was beautiful. We had a fun night that ended at a bar with an over the top bar tender from Scotland who handed out shots called Baby Guinness. “ there is no Guinness and a baby Guinness.” was the quote of the night.Read more

A most frustrating travel day!

    August 16, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Oh my! What a day! My flight from DC arriving 2 hours late really threw a wrench in my plans. I’d intended to go to Heidelberg today, but I just didn’t have enough time. So, I bought a ticket to go into Frankfurt - but the Germans aren’t big on multi-lingual signage, so I got on the wrong train. I ended up in Mainz, the home of Johannes Gutenberg. I toured the cathedral and the Gutenberg-Museum. With a lot of difficulty in buying a return train ticket (even the Germans were having trouble with the machines!), I made it back to the airport following a train delay. My flight from Frankfurt to Paris boarded on time, but apparently thanks to late arriving luggage we left about 45 minutes late. The AC kept turning off and the plane was full of kids and people with an averse reaction to deodorant. For two hours done kid kicked the back of my seat while others screamed at the top of their lungs. Due to the late arrival, I missed the last train from CDG to Reims. So now I had to find a different method to get to Gare de l’Est and then to Reims. The bus just never came - so I called an Uber - despite the 50€ price tag. We got caught in awful traffic, and it looked like I wouldn’t make my 8:58 pm train. But Uber Steve drove like hell and got me there with 8 minutes to spare. My platform was the next to last, of course. Fortunate, the train (like everything else over the last 2 days!) was delayed, so a bit of breathing room. I’m on my way to Reims now - late, tired, stressed. But I’m going to make it at least! Sipping champagne tomorrowRead more

    Wiesbaden

    July 13, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    1. Stopp Mainz

    May 6 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

    Day 55: Gutenberg Museum

    May 6 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Next was touring the Gutenberg museum. The museum is in an old church and has both a natural history museum and a museum about Johannes Gutenberg. He was the inventor of movable type printing in Europe. He was born in Mainz and is known for starting the printing revolution.

The exhibit was very interesting. They gave each visitor a card that you placed near each topic and it would project more information or in a manner that engaged you. Also we were able to do a selfie and it superimposed the selfie into a scene with printing press.

The main items of interest include a reconstructed printing press and two copies of the Gutenberg Bible. Also a temporary exhibition presenting topics of typography and book design. My favorite part was seeing the Gutenberg bibles and finding out that the German Laubach family has possession of one of the last 5 versions. I remember that when Grace and I visited the town of Laubach, we were told about an old bible but the book was not available for viewing. Laubach claim to fame. Interesting exhibit

Hit the gift shop and then we got some slices of cake for a picnic at the river. Benjola and I walked along the river until we hit the stairs she loves to sit at where we had wine and cake. Nice sunny day with a breeze - fun to watch the activity on the Rhine.

Once again Benjola took me a new route to her apartment building where we dropped some stuff off to go to the store. I hung out in the back of the building in the community space-so nice.

Headed to the store for some white asparagus and other items to have dinner at her place. She took me to her lovely garden space to show me the layout and her new rhododendrons. She shares the space and I met her partner who tends mostly to the vegetable garden.

Fun dinner and taking about how to solve the world.

    Day 54: Frankfurt-Visiting Rudesheim

    May 4 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Today was a travel day to Frankfurt on a Lufthansa flight from Marseille. Landed and found my friend Benjola.

We took trains and buses to get us to the cute town of Rüdesheim am Rhein for a quick visit to taste the lovely wine and see the lovely area. The area Rhine Valley is well known for winemaking, especially Riesling wines. The town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Rhine region.

After we got off the very packed train, we walked into the main part of town. Benjola pointed out the town Bingen and the University (Hochschule Geisenheim University) across the Rhine river and is well know for winemaking course and has its own vineyard.

As we got to the center of town, we came upon Drosselgasse which is a lane lined with shops, taverns and restaurants. We did some looking around and went into one dedicated Christmas store.

Up next was taking the cable car up to the top of the mountain / vineyard. What a view we had of the vineyards and the Rhine river. You can see allot of people traversing the roads and trails below. The area is open to visitors to stroll or hike. The forest here is called Neiderwald.

At the top is an observatory where you can enjoy the view and maybe have a bottle of wine. The temple or observatory was built by Count Ostein who loved this view and had it built in 1870.

We walked over to the Niederwald monument. It was built between 1871 and 1883 to commemorate the Unification of Germany after the end of the Franco-Prussian war. The first stone was laid on 16 September 1877 by Kaiser Wilhelm I. It is a huge monument and as Benjola said - to ensure the people of France knew that this now Germany.

We then walked to the other cable car which was more like a ski lift. There we found a beautiful old hunting lodge and a field of deer. Also fields of Rapeseed that is used to make oil. Down we went to the town of Assmannhausen.

What a cute quiet town with beautiful houses and buildings. We stopped to have a couple glasses of Reisling and a snack of cheese and bread.

Then back on the train to Weisbadner to collect my luggage and then head to Benjola’s apartment. She lives one stop away from Weisbadner where her work is. The town has a US base.

Lovely walk through the old town and garden of Mainz to reach her apartment. Nice walk to see her neighborhood. Met her lovely cat - who is not too sure about me yet.
