    Wilkommen auf Föhr

    We drove from Billund to Dagebull this morning and boarded the ferry to Föhr. Dorit and Theo were waiting at the terminal to greet us. We stopped by Monika's shop in Wyk to say "Hi," then Dorit invited us all for coffee. In addition to coffee and tea, there were delicious plumb bars, cookies, and lemon cake. Frank joined us after work, and coffee transitioned to beer and Manhattans. After several hours of visiting, we said our goodbyes and checked into our hotel back in Wyk. Then we walked along the promenade and found a spot for dinner. Tomorrow, we plan to meet Theo at the Friesian Museum in Wyk.Read more

    Dagebüll

    Af en eller anden grund, er vi liiiidt trætte efter surpriceparty hos Pia og Erik i går. Så vi nåede ikke længere i dag. Dagebüll er en lille færgeby ( sejlrute til Föhr). Resten af byen består feriehuse og hoteller/restauranter. Det regner og er tåget, så vi har ikke slået teltet op.... Men valgte ho-teltet 😁 Strandhotel Dagebüll.Read more

    Zum Wandern braucht ma kane Berg... 🏖

    Es Aufsteh woa heit zach, de Nocht hod doch a bissl länger dauert. 🥴 Oba i woit unbedingt nu in Sylt wandern geh, drum hob i en Phips leider um 10i ausm Betterl schmeissn miasn. 🤭

    Zum Glück is oba de Laune vo Minute zu Minute besser woan, zu Fuß hauma uns aufn Weg zur Bushaltestelle gmocht und san vo duat mitn Bus 🚌 indn südlichen Teil vo da Insel bis kurz vor Hörnum gfoan.

    Und do is unser Wanderung rund um de Hörnum Odde (=schlanke, ins Meer ragende Zunge) losgaunga. 🥾

    Durch blühende Salzwiesen und Dünen sama gewandert und haum de beeindruckende Umgebung und den Ausblick genossen. Eigentlich woa da gaunze Weg entweder direkt nebn dem Meer oda zumindest mit Sicht drauf. 🌊

    Auf diverse Infotafeln hauma vü erfoan über Muschelfischerei, Naturschutzgebiete und Artenschutz. Unter anderem gibt's duat gaunz vü Wiesen, de zum Schutz der Vögel 🐦 ned betreten wern deafn. Zugvögel kinnan si duat auf ernam Weg indn Süden ausrasten. Darum soi mas do a ned stören, do würdens nur unnedige Energie verschwenden.

    Am Hörnumer Hafen hauma a Muschelfischerboot ⚓️ eifoan und an wunderschönen Leuchtturm gseng. 🚨

    Am Weststrand entlang is daun wieder noch oben gaunga, da Großteil vom Weg woa ob do am Strand. Wir san do draufkuma, dass am Sand geh eigentlich mindestens genau so anstrengend is, wie auf an Berg geh 🤣 oba es wunderschöne Wattmeer glei neben uns woa a guada Trost. 🥰

    Auf sogenannte Tetrapoden (= Betonblocksteine mit etwa 6 Tonnen Gwicht, dienen ois Wellenbrecher und soin an de Dünen gelegene Siedlungen schützen) hauma daun moi Jausenpause gmocht und a bissl gerastet. 🥪

    Noch ca. 17 km wandern und 4 1/2 Stund sama erschöpft, durstig, mit de Hosntoschn voller Muscheln 🐚 u mit wechade Fiass am Campingplotz aukuma, haum uns schnö umzong und san nu kurz zum Shoppen noch Westerland gfoan. 🛍

    Zum Abendessen hauma uns Käsespätzle gmocht 🤤 und nochdem mi da Phips beim Jolly spün 🃏 wieda moi fertig gmocht hod, is unser letzter Abend in Sylt zu Ende gaunga. 🥲    Read more

    Schlussspurt nach Klanxbüll (67km)

    nach 1143 Kilometer endete unsere Radtour durch Dänemark nach dem Besuch in Ribe.
    Wir radelten wieder dem Damm entlang, erst an dessen Südende bemerkten wir, wie uns der starke Wind erneut abbremste.
    Unterwegs haben wir erfahren, dass mit dem Bau des 7 Meter hohen Damms um 1917 herum begonnen wurde. Bei einer Schleuse (hier fliesst ein Bach ins Wattenmeer) stand ein Gedenkstein, zur Erinnerung an die 50 Männer, die 1923 beim Bau von einer Sturtzflut ums Leben kamen.
    Im weiteren Verlauf fanden wir top moderne Shelters, mit WC, Duschen und Strom.
    Wie erwartet, schlugen wir um 15 Uhr auf dem Parkplatz in Klanxbüll auf, wo uns unser WoMo erwartete. Ratz fatz haben wir alles im Auto verstaut und fuhren auf den nächsten Campingplatz (Leck), um alles zu waschen und wieder einzuräumen.

    Wattenmeer Nationalpark

    Si trova nella porzione di Mare del Nord detta Mare dei Wadden; è un parco naturale protetto e tutelato come Patrimonio dell’umanità dall’UNESCO, popolato da varie specie di uccelli, pecore, lepri ed altri animali selvatici.
    Ci siamo arrivati oggi, splendida giornata di sole, con temperature gradevoli e poco vento, ed abbiamo camminato in libertà, circondati dalla numerosissima fauna, apprezzando il silenzio interrotto unicamente dai suoni della natura: il vento, il mare, i versi degli animali al nostro passaggio.
    Parcheggio gratuito nel quale abbiamo anche consumato il pranzo, per poi trasferirci in altra area sosta sempre in natura.
    Le foto non rendono la bellezza del luogo, ma ci permetteranno di ricordare e rivivere le emozioni provate…uno stormo di coloratissime oche selvatiche che si leva in volo al nostro passaggio, agnellini distesi a riposare al sole o che succhiano il latte dalle madri, leprotti saltellanti che si rincorrono sul bagnasciuga…tutti veri e propri regali della natura!
    Ripensiamo al nostro Delta del Po, che tanto amiamo; dovrebbero tutelarlo così, visto che anch’esso offre spettacolari scenari che meriterebbero più rispetto e considerazione.
    Stanotte dormiamo qui, domani saluteremo la Germania per proseguire il nostro viaggio in Danimarca.    Read more

    Day 35–36

    Südwärts...

    Heute verlassen wir Krisiansand und Norwegen in Richtung Heimat. Die Überfahrt mit der FjordLine FSTR ist bis Mitte Skagerrak etwas rauh, aber im grossen Ganzen sehr angenehm. Bereits in Deutschland übernachten wir auf einem sehr schönen Camingplatz in Nordstrand, Nordfriesland. Der Platz liegt unmittelbar hinter dem Landschutzdeich.
    Morgen werden wir gut 1,000 Kilometer bis nach Hause zurücklegen müssen. Thomas und ich werden uns beim Fahren abwechseln, und es sind regelmässige Pausen geplant.
    Damit geht eine trotz oft unpässlichem Wetter sehr schöne und abwechslungsreiche Reise mit spannenden und interessanten Begegnungen zu Ende.

    Leaving Föhr

    We left Föhr this morning on the 9:35am ferry to Dagebüll. As we sailed away from Wyk, we began sharing our favorite parts of the visit with each other. There were so many wonderful moments, but we both agreed that the simple times of sharing conversation and coffee with family were the best. We hope to return soon!Read more

    The first Hassold House on Föhr

    Our final stop of the day was a visit to the first Hassold house on Föhr. After a few photos, we all said our goodbyes, with plans to visit again soon and for some of the Föhr Hassolds to come visit us in Oregon and Washington. We had such a wonderful time on Föhr.     Day 18

    Exploring the ancient history of Föhr

    Both early in the morning and after coffee, Frank took us to see a few interesting sites that tell us some of the ancient history of the island. In the morning, we visited the site of a Viking harbor near Goting. Today, the area is a marshland, but hundreds of years ago, the area was used as a natural harbor. The marsh would flood during storms, so an area of higher ground above a natural dyke was used as the location for merchant shops. Nearby, we visited burial mounds that date back to the Stone Age. Various people have inhabited Föhr for a very long time.

    After coffee, we visited Lembeksburg, a Viking ring fortress. This is one of several forts positioned in a line from here extending north east toward Denmark. The line appears to have a stronger than normal magnetic field, but it's unclear how the vikings sensed it or why they chose to build their forts along this line.    Read more

    Coffee!

    We met the family mid-afternoon at Namine's Deli in Süderende for coffee. Frank works for the owner of the Deli, helping to manage other restaurants and hotels that he owns around the island. There was a wonderful selection of delicious pastries, coffee and tea, and wonderful conversation! A reporter from the island newspaper stopped by to gather information for an article she planned to write about our family's visit to Föhr.Read more
