    Athen! 🏛️

    May 5 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    Athens

    May 5 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We made it. Not the best 10 hours. Lots of turbulence and little sleep but we’re here and we did some exploring. We walked a lot! We are both about to drop. We are heading to Santorini in the morning. See you then!❤️Read more

    And another museum

    May 3 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This morning we visited the Acropolis Museum. An early start to arrive at opening time with fewer visitors 🤣. It is a beautiful building designed to look over the Acropolis and glimpses of the Parthenon. The audio guide and interpretive signs were excellent. What tumultuous times this ancient site has witnessed (including being blown up by the Turks).Read more

    Athens

    May 2 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Arrived in Athens last night, which instantly leaves a mark. Walking outside the train station, you are immediately face to face with ruins, Hadrian’s library. In fact, going back a step, there are ruins within the train station! While excavating the train station, they came across a large set of ruins. Incredible.

Hadrian was a Roman emperor in the first century AD, who was supposed to take over Athens, but instead fell in love with it and its people and lived out the rest of his days here. The Greeks then dedicated a monument called Hadrian’s Arch. The library was one of his many contributions to the Greeks.

Though not in the full throes of tourist season yet, you would be hard pressed to realize it. The streets, all of them, are jam packed, yet beautiful, and who doesn’t like people watching. We walked past the Ancient Agora, which was a meeting place and the birthplace of democracy.

We went to Zappeion Hall, which is the first building created for the Olympic Village back in 1896. Though the first Olympic Games were first held in the 7th century BC and continued until the 3rd century AD, the games were stopped for 1500 years! Emperor Theodosius wanted to focus on spreading Christianity and deemed the games to be pagan. Crazy!

We then swung by the Panathenaic stadium, which was originally built in the 6th century BC. Still to this day, this is the stadium where the Olympic Torch will always begin its long journey towards its host country. It also one of the reasons for the creation of the marathon.

The Greeks won a great battle versus the Ottoman Empire, in the city of Marathon, and asked one of their fastest runners to go back to Athens and tell the women about their great victory so they knew not to take their own lives as opposed to being slaves of the Ottoman Empire. Well, the distance that soldier ran from Marathon back to the stadium in Athens was about 26 miles. And we have run them ever since. The city has a great feel to it. Tomorrow, the Acropolis.

    Museum overload

    May 2 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Yesterday we visited the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture and the Museum of Cycladic Art. Both were excellent with the Benaki covering from 7,000BC to modern times and the other covering the Cycladic civilisation (Minoan) 2,500 years ago. Exhausting.Read more

    Getting our bearings

    April 29 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Our arrival in Athens was surprisingly chilly (14 degrees) with howling winds. Not the Greece I had envisaged when I packed an array of summer dresses, shorts and tops.
Yesterday was spent walking the streets around Syntagma square and the Plaka area - over 12km by the time we staggered home.
We are staying in a district called Exarchia which is described as edgy and home to anarchists (there is a large contingent of riot police on our street 24/7). It is also known for its street art and graffiti which covers every available wall.
This afternoon we are off to explore the Acropolis, our first and no doubt not the last archaeological site we will visit on this trip.

Zweiter Reisetag, Korfu + Marina Gouvia

    May 3 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Read more

    May Day

    May 1 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

May Day is a big deal in Greece and nearly everything closed for the day including ancient sites and museums. It was a day for walking and watching the huge may day rally around Syntagma square. The rally had a convivial vibe with no police presence except around the periphery. Even the Presidential gardens were closed but we were lucky enough to be overtaken by guards coming out of the gardens. No need to fight with the masses to watch the changing of the guards at the parliament entrance. On the way home we discovered that our local cake shop was open and bought some yummy baklava for later.Read more

    Acropolis

    April 30 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We booked a 5pm entry ticket to visit the Acropolis because we thought it would be hot(it wasn't) and less crowded (probably). It was amazing to see the Parthenon and other structures and consider that they have been such a central part of Greek culture for 2500 years.Read more

    Athens, Greece

    April 28 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We flew from Lisbon to Athens yesterday, arriving around dinner time. We were super lucky as our flight departed at 11:05 and a mass grid power outage took place in Portugal around 11:30.Phewf! It's been a quick stop in Athens but we will be back for a little more after our Greek Island hopping.Read more
