Merapi 🌋- hunting Lava streams 😅

    November 2, 2023 in Indonesia

Visiting an active volcano in the ocean still wasn't enough for me 🙈 Part of that childhood dream always was, seeing the floating lava in streams, cooling down to stone.
Only few locations on earth, where this can be done safely and planned, but at that time, Merapi volcano, located only few kilometers north of Yogjakarta, is active enough to at least see lava streams from a distance.
Even if eruptions, small pyroclastic shockwaves and lava streams are more or less regularly and bounded onto it's west/southwest side, since several months, the whole area is closed for safety reasons. Nevertheless, if you're smart and explore the area, you can find areas, quite close to the eruptions, which are legal to go but only few kilometers from the active zone.
And due to lack of waves at the south coast, I had some time to explore these spots in Yogja 😬
As here lava streams only appear as smoking, damping lines/areas, running down the slope, during daytime, you can really see them at night only.
Unfortunately the weather (not too much luck about weather at this trip 😅😉) made it difficult, to spot them out, every evening clouds were rising up at Merapi's top. After three attempts, always trying new, better view points, and always ending up with only seeing clouds, but no volcano, I was already a little bit frustrated.
No worries, exploring the area, finding hidden pathes, secret spots, like a graveyard on the top of a hill, or some beautiful valleys with amazing landscapes, was even worth all the efforts.
But on my last night at Yogja, before going to a visa-run by plane, I've made a last attempt.
Again watching the Merapi live streams on YouTube, seeing clouds are opening up around midnight, I decided at 1:30am to go again.
It was already clear, that going to a nice spot, close to some sand mines and quarries, would be the right choice and it's quite likely that I could go from there even closer to the crater, too.
Short story: went on some crazy roads, sometimes surrounded by huge sand- and stone trucks, crossed some small and one quite big stream, with my scooter. Completely covered with dirt, from head to feet, I finally reached a very hidden spot with an awesome view on Mt. Merapi.
Standing alone in the darkness, surrounded by the jungle, hearing heavy trucks and machines at the quarries around, I finally saw some small eruptions. Seeing the volcano spitting out "lava-bombs", ending up in red-yellow streams down the hill was unbelievable. Not too big, and as they appeared only time by time, hard to catch with my cam, but an impressive experience.
Felt very lucky, as activity was clearly getting less, but still saw several streams and eruptions before sun started to rise.
A beautiful morning with a clear sky and a great view on the volcano. One of the best sunrise experiences in my life. 🤩
Literally getting no sleep, needing a long shower and after spending around 4hrs on my scooter, mostly on "off-road-tracks", I felt really worn out - but happy. 🙂

    Movie Stars✨ & Machetes

    July 22, 2024 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

With honeyed coaxing the prime, fat bule were herded up the hill, every step and drop of sweat recorded by the faithful camera crew retinue as we entered the forest. Just "one kee-lomita" we were encouraged as the elevation and puffing increased.

The forest closed in and darkened, the track grew narrow and muddier as we starting passing coffee trees bursting with red beans that would easily sufficed for our slave labour... but still we stomped on, the video cameras and random's mobile phones filming the huffs and puffs. It was starting to feel like a movie but not with a good ending.

After a lot more steps we paused and Koffee Kamal set the filmset crew and began to soliloquy the plantation's advantages straight down the lens, the green leaves and red beans of the coffee tree all around.

We were then pushed up through the scrub to the most inaccessible bushel and shown the dexterous speed and efficiency required. Ants ran down our hands, leaves slapped our faces as our clumsy attempts did little to fill our baskets. The cameras eyes then moved to focus on Eric, the fattest one, and he blossomed and shone under the spotlight, posturating and pantomiming as directed.

Meanwhile my suspicions of being kidnapped and buried grew as did my dire need for white porcelain. Eric finally appeared with his supporting actors and crew with lots of male guffawing and bravado.

Then the machetes appeared... as did a gang of plantation workers all curious what the fuss was with the bules.

In panic I determinedly intoned our intentions of wanting to leave but Eric was able to dodge the arrows I stared at him and continued to bask in the adoration. Eventually he picked up on my psycho panic vibe and intimated it was time to go but was still persuaded and press ganged into joining in the coffee washing process and a revelation of a 9th century temples on the return trek.

The temple was very beautiful even though earthquakes had forced many rebuilds. A dreamlike and tranquil green floating cloud.

To fast forward, we made it back, after copious coffees, profusions of wanting to leave, promises of fame and most importantly a once white porcelain throne.

4 hours of traffic later we arrived at our accom, but in my weariness and hunger found I still found enough fault to force me to take action and find accom with less stained sheets.

    Phew 😐

Dinner consisted of the blackboard special at our digs: 3 margherita pizzas and 3 mojitos for $20. Tomato-less and basil free circles of bread arrived and mojitos that had lost their rum. We had a lot to be thankful for narrowly escaping Eric being made their Jungle King George Clooney.

    Der aktive Vulkan Merapi....

    September 12, 2023 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

    https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merapi_(Java)

Day 6 : Mon vrai dernier jour à Yogyakar

    June 19, 2023 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

It was my last day in Yogyakarta.
Yogyakarta is not a really beautiful city but there are not lot of tourist. So it's really interesting. During this 3 last days, I could live like an Indonesian.
Today we went at the view point by scotter (I didn't drive of course, I was with Louise) . riding a scooter in Indonesia is quite interesting, because it s the main transport used here.
To drive in Indonesia seems crazy.
I was a little bit disappointed because, we can't see the eruption volcano. I didn't know, but the eruption are at 2am (at morning), not each day. I think it's because it's cyclic.
To wainting sunset, We play at a cardgame with the team at the top of the viewpoint.
So let's go to sleep in night train.
To go to the station, I take a "Crab" (like Uber but really less expensive) the way was 16RID but I didn't have change. I had just 50RID. I think the guy put the money in an other pocket... a young man has stopped nearby. I asked him for change. he paid part for me. He was really cute ! Bref I fell in love with an Indonesian. ❤️ It was one of the first time I find a pretty Indonesian. (He is just on front me in the train)

    Weltkulturerbe, Verkehrschaos und Armut

    November 21, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    Yogyakarta -> Mandang

    March 2, 2023 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

    Amen 🙏
