    Day 8

    April 30 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today we traveled to the Cliffs of Moher.
One of the most unique and precious aspects of the cliffs is the local wildlife that calls them home. Those with a love of bird-watching will be spoiled here: think countless sad-eyed puffins; elegantly dressed razorbills; chattering kittiwakes; and if you’re lucky, even an elusive peregrine falcon.

The surrounding landscape itself is a marvel of natural delights, with delicate sea campion, blushing sea pinks and wildflowers dotting the springy coastal grass around your feet. On a calm day, keep an eye out for any ripples in the water – breaching basking sharks and friendly dolphin pods are a common sight. Tonight we are staying in Ennis.

    Bunratty Castle & Folk Park

    April 29 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

  • Day 167

    Ennis

    June 17, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Bus time, stops and a night in Ballina.

    April 20, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Off to a stop in Adaire this morning as we head north up the west coast of Ireland. 🇮🇪
Cute small town with a few remaining cottages with thatched roofs.
Then onto Galway the 5th largest city in Ireland and home to five universities. Bustlying Saturday morning on a perfect sunny day, complete with Farmers Market. Local seafood harbor so lots of seafood menu options. Very “peopley” so not a favorite stop with me.
Nice country ride to our overnight in Ballina. Tomorrow we head into Northern Ireland.

    Foynes Flying boat museum

    September 24, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

In 1937 Foynes was chosen as the main hub for flying boats crossing the Atlantic to/from America and onwards to the rest of the world. Until 1945 the hub flourished with new planes and new tech gradually making the journey across the Atlantic more reliable. Ultimately planes became powerful enough to reliably cross the Atlantic in one flight and the better runways developed during WW2, spelt the end of this golden age. It's a great story and the service also played a great part of the allies success in WW2. Maureen O'Hara married one of the pilots who developed the service and she was involved in setting up the museum so part of the exhibition is dedicated to her. Also we get to stay overnight in the museum carpark gratis, having paid for the museum. 😁Read more

  • Day 26

    Limerick

    May 28, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

The terrific weather continued and Limerick was abuzz when we arrived, as the local team were playing Cork in hurling, with Limerick needing to win to make the Championship Final, which they did. We saw the crowds making their way to the stadium, then we watched a fair bit of the game at the hotel when we arrived. Hurling is a great game to watch.

King Johns Castle on the River Shannon is at the centre of Limerick. It was designed as a defensive castle, not one to be lived in and was built on the site of an old Viking fortress.

The River Shannon is the longest river in Ireland and it flows through 11 counties.

Dinner was at the hotel. The Irish and British sure know how to do pub fish and chips and also pub pies and chips. And we haven't had a bad beer yet.

    Limerick, Bunratty, Cliffs of Moher

    May 10 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Visited the Treaty Stone and King John's Castle in Limerick. Verybintersting castle. Fun character actors.
Then on to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. Recommended by a couple of locals in the Flannerys Bar last night. Really good. Could have spent hours there. It is the castle itself and a reconstructed village.
Then onto the Cliffs of Moher. Gary 'chatted up' the parking attendant and HE gave us free entry to the cliffs, the cliff experience centre and overnight camping. Gary's ticket does say Disabled Guest and mine says Carer... hehe.

    Castleconnell

    April 30 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After a very interesting time at Blarney Castle and Gardens, we arrived at Castleconnell for our overnight stay at the Castle Oaks House Hotel, which is set on 26 acres of beautiful gardens along the banks of the River Shannon. We discovered the hotel offers warm Irish hospitality, home-cooked food, and great conversation.
In addition to the peaceful atmosphere, it offers scenic walks. Tomorrow, we make our way to Belfast.
