    Bolsena

    May 9 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

    Ciao Toskana, Salve Latio

    May 8 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

    Einziger Wehmutstropfen…, ohne Kaffee!

    Day 7 Montefiascone to Bolsena

    May 1 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

After a few kms to get out of the town again the majority of the walk was through farmland, forest park and bush. There was even a portion of single track like NZ. Although it was only 18km today a lot of it was down hill and hard on sore feet and knees.
I met a fellow kiwi. Karen from Wellington and her and her husband were cycling 🚴 2 weeks and ending in Rome
When I got to Bolsena it was buzzing with people something like a fish festival and Labour Day holiday. Real Italian pizza for sustenance. I think I will have my first gelato of the trip after dinner tonight

    Day 9 Bolsena to Aquapendente

    May 3 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

A day of 2 halves. Trying to leave town the street was closed but I saw that people lived in the street so I climbed over. The street was straight up. Then I got to the top and found the castle with a beautiful view. The first 12 km were through beautiful Forrest and farmlands. I saw wild deer bounding across my path and too quick to get a photo. I was passed by a Pilgrim in horseback ( no photo as he hardly said hi), also I met 2 very friendly cats. Then the last 12 km it was through ploughed fields of dust. Lodgings for the night are tough and pizza for dinner.Read more

    Day 8 Rest day Bolsena

    May 2 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

A bit of a lazy day today as it’s a scheduled test day. My body is feeling good only one small blister ( managed ) but I need to recoup my energy levels. after doing my washing I walked to the lake front and had a cappuccino and pastry for breakfast. Then I went shopping for some electrolytes for the hot days ( which are most days). I then went and looked through the Basilica of Santa Christina who is still lying there for all to see. Sorry no photos allowed.
Pizza for dinner and a spare for tomorrow’s walk.
The rest of the day is here writing this and talking to Jim.
Bolsena in 1263 is known when during a Mass in the Basilica of Santa Cristina, the consecrated host (Christina) began to bleed, an event that strengthened the faith of the doubting priest.I’m off to Aquapendente tomorrow so I’ll see you there.

    Day 6 Viterbo to Montefiascone

    April 30 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Last night at the Ostello I met some really interesting people as we all sat around for a pilgrims dinner and talked afterwards. The days walk took a few km to get out of town and I exited the city past a cemetery like you have never seen multi stories and multiple buildings. Thought farmers fields and muddy farm tracks I saw amazing fields of wild flowers. It was beautiful. The photos don’t do it justice. Then I hit the Roman road. It was humbling to think that I was walking on sticks that the Roman slaves had laid. This made for difficult walking though and the up hill began and didn’t stop until I got the la Rocca 450m. A fantastic view of lake Bolsena. I’m staying at a nunnery and went to Vespers all in Italian and the chapel was cold. It was built in 680 AD and has had Benedictine nuns since. I Had a beautiful pilgrim dinner of pasta primo, beef patty with tomato sauce secondo, with fennel and tomatoes. An apple for dessert. A glass of local white wine with it. Only 2 other pilgrims tonight , A woman from Holland and a man from ItalyRead more

    Pitigliano

    April 22 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Read more

    Civita di Bagnoregio

    February 22 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

This town was the reason I wanted to go to Orvieto. Orvieto is the closest train station to Civita, so you have to take a bus or taxi from the train station to Bagnoregio. Then in order to get from Bagnoregio to Civita di Bagnoregio you have to walk because no cars are allowed in Civita. It is sometimes referred to as the "disappearing town" because similarly to Orvieto, it was built on a hill. This hill is tiny and is slowly eroding away on the sides which will eventually cause the buildings to fall of the sides of it. The town was so beautiful and had a few residents along with a few restaurants. Since the hill was so small every street you walked on you could see the mountains in the distance from. The stone buildings matched the scenery around them and it was so beautiful. I wish I had a little more time here to explore more but it was so cool and so fun to walk around in. No cars was also a great break from almost getting hit by taxis every day in Florence!Read more

    Orvieto!

    February 22 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

This weekend I was going to go to Venice and then into the dolomites but there was a train strike on Sunday. I decided to take a day trip to Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio instead. I'll do a separate post for Civita because I have so many pics! Orvieto was a beautiful town between Florence and Rome. It was built on top of a hill, so I took a cable car to the top. Their Cathedral was huge and highly decorated. It reminded me a lot of the Duomo in Florence but still had very unique decorations. The town was quiet and not very touristy which was awesome coming from Florence now entering the tourist season. There was a lot of parks and one at the edge of the hill the town was built on. This park was beautiful and had a lot of ruins from what looked like medieval architecture. They also had a parking garage! This sounds like a strange thing to include but I haven't seen one of those in a few months. However, on the top level of the parking garage instead of uncovered parking they had real grass soccer fields and a playground. This day trip was definitely worth it and was super fun to check out another Italian town.Read more

    Civita di Bagnoregio

    November 13, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Read more
