    Chioggia to Venezia

    A leisurely start today with free time until 1030. We had breakfast and went for a short walk before beginning our 25 km ride along the islands of Pellestrina and Lido. Between these islands we had a short ferry ride. The day was hot and very humid.
    We boarded Ave Maria for a quick shower before visiting the island of Murano and the San Marco Glass Factory.
    Aperitif was served on the top deck as we sailed past the southern shore of Venetzia and moored on the island of Giudecca. What an amazing site to finally see Venice!
    Once moored, we went with Francesco & Fabrizio on a short walk of Giudecca and saw Venice from the rooftop of the Hilton Hotel.
    Another fabulous 3 course meal was served before our final briefing by our excellent Guides.
    Tomorrow we are joining our Guides for a 4 hour tour of Venice. The afternoon is free to do what we like before we pack and prepare to leave our temporary home on the lovely Ave Maria.    Leggi altro

    Adria to Chioggia

    We had another sailing breakfast this morning which was lovely - watching the river bank pass by. The routine is to eat breakfast then make your own roll for lunch, together with fruit and a chocolate or muesli bar. Once moored the bikes were unloaded and those that are self-guided take off while those who are going with the Guides wait until everyone is ready to go.
    Today we decided to join 6 other Aussies who are self-guiding. All was good for the first 5 minutes until the group took a wrong turn! Half went one way and the other half another way - what do we do? We caught the Guided group, ate humble pie and begged them to allow us to rejoin the Guided Group!
    It is low 30's and humid. By the time we stopped for lunch at a beach resort, we were desperate for a swim! It was lovely. We have heard that next week the temperatures in this region are expected to be mid-40's! So glad we timed our holiday to finish this week!
    We arrived in the beautiful town of Chioggia - a fishing town which is described as 'Little Venice'. After buying water transport tickets for our stay in Venice, we all enjoyed Gelato & a cold drink.
    We embarked the Ave Maria around 4.30 and showered ready for dinner and drinks on the roof top. Another delicious meal featuring fish! We sat with the Canadian girls tonight and had a great time with them. Tomorrow is our last riding day and we sail into Venice.    Leggi altro

    Lucca und zurück nach Osten

    Nach dem Frühstück fahren wir rund eine Stunde nach Lucca. Eine toskanische Stadt, die wir noch nicht kennen.

    Wir finden einen super Camper Parkplatz und begehen gleich die Stadtmauer, für die Lucca bekannt ist. Die Mauer umringt die ganze Altstadt und ist komplett erhalten. Oben kann man sogar mit dem Fahrrad rundherum fahren, was viele Leute nutzen.

    Danach nutzen wir wieder ein Gratisticket für die Besichtigung aller Kirchen, sowie der Ausgrabungen darunter, und der Besteigung des Glockenturmes. Wir sind beeindruckt. 🥰

    Anschließend flanieren wir gemütlich durch die alten Gässchen und kehren in einem der Schanigärten auf eine echt tosksnische Pasta mit hausgemachten Nudeln ein.

    Auf der Fahrt zurück an die Ostküste beeindruckt uns die wechselnde Landschaft. Erst noch typisch toskanisch, mit Pinien, Olivenbäumen und Wein, dann gebirgig mit endlosen Wäldern, und zuletzt dann durch Venezien, im Po-Delta mit endlosen Gemüse- und Getreidefeldern im fruchtbaren Boden des Deltas. Für rund 20km fahren wir am Schutzdamm des Po‘s entlang. Immer wieder erhaschen wir einen Blick auf den im Moment gut gefüllten Fluss.

    Unser heutiger Campingplatz liegt in Chioggia, an der Lagune gegenüber von Venedig, wo wir uns für die morgige Fahrt nach Kärnten in Stellung bringen.    Leggi altro

    Sorry Aeneas: we got other plans

    Antenor was a counselor to King Priam; like his war foe Odysseus, he was known for being “crafty”. He joined Aeneas in the escape from the flames of Troy, but when their expedition for a new homeland reached the eastern shore of a boot-shaped peninsula, Antenor and some comrades said farewell; he broke ground of what would become Padua, and at the end of a long reedy strand, his chum Clodius founded the town now known as Chioggia. Since becoming the mainland port nearest Venice for Viking Cruises, it has probably become better known than ever in its history - despite having the largest fish market in Italy, the world’s second oldest tower clock (1300s), and a unique broad-apsed beauty of a church, San Giacomo. We savored a Easter morning stroll through its authenticity and humility, a contrast to the mad tourist love of its northern neighbor on the lagoon, La Serenissima.     MSC Sea Dayz N Nightz 🚢 🌊☀️🍸

    Thankfully, there is only one full day at sea… I only have the benchmark
    of P and O cruise line to compare this cruise 🚢 to and I must say that MSC run a hot second place. Absolutely love unpacking once and just chilling. That is always gonna be attractive! 🎯

    Firstly, I am really enjoying a soul occupancy inside cabin… It is very roomy and tastefully decorated with nice artwork and with the addition of mirrors to add a feeling of more space. The best part is that you can have complete black out darkness morning, noon and night if you want rest. Highly recommended cabin choice. Don’t see the point of a balcony cabin when you go to the bars to drink and socialise anyway. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Unless you book an excursion through MSC you are not given any instructions or information as to how you should make your way from the docking port to the city or town that you are visiting. Charging $30 for a transfer on a ship shuttle bus does not seem fair to me but the choice is limited. I figure if the ship docks half hour drive from the town then the shuttle in could be complementary rather than another add-on. It’s all a matter of opinion I suppose. When in Rome…

    The Restaurant service is impeccable and the food 🥘 is delicious. Wayu & Yousef we’re beautiful 😍 hosts; both from Indonesia 🇮🇩 Nothing was too much trouble! The Restaurant is much more relaxing and enjoyable than participating in any of the on deck buffet selections… They are just a feeding frenzy at all times 🐷 but many love them so that’s fantastic and helps distribute passengers 😎
    You could have three courses for lunch and three courses for dinner if you want. The breakfast menu is also extensive 🥐🧀🍳🥗🍤🍷🍽️

    Is quite difficult to get a drink at any of the bars because they are understaffed; there is always one staff member stacking plates or stocking the fridge, even if there is a queue of people two deep at the bar. We caught the easy drink package prior to boarding, so it ended up great value. Trust me, we get our money’s worth! 🍹🍸🥃🍾🍷🥂🍻🍺☕️🫖🥤
    …it took a few days to learn but the best way to get a drink is to get the attention of the ONE waitress and order with her…

    The most pleasant staff member we have interacted with works in the jewellery boutique store - Pauline from Argentina 🇦🇷…thankfully my senses kicked in when she skilfully attempted to sell me an anchor ⚓️ bracelet for €370!

    A very fun night was had by all at the disco 💃🏼 on the top deck. It is interesting to watch the dance staff performing like dance prostitutes all night long: working the crowd into a frenzy… All shapes and sizes, welcomed and encouraged by their tempting moves and seductive eye 👁️ contact 🙃

    It’s kinda weird not having any access to your phone 📱 internet & social media while you’re on the ship unless you pay 💰 high access fees up front. It’s also more relaxing when you are not distracted by content and notifications 📣 so you engage with what’s going on around you better 👍🏻

    Thinking about TripADeal again and I reflect on the wonderful group of people that have become friends on the cruise and it mellows my heart 💜 and makes me realise that there were more good things than bad that came out of the whole experience: I mean, just look at the happiness expressed in the faces at our dining table… that speaks volumes 🫶🏻👏✊🏻🥰    Leggi altro

    Endlich mal wieder Sonnenschein schon am Morgen . Gleich nach dem Frühstück radeln wir auf kleinen Straßen an der Etsch entlang bis zur Mündung in die Lagune. Dann komme ich auf eine ganz blöde Idee. Um nicht wieder zurück zu müssen kürzen wir über den Strand ab🙄. Stellenweise am Wassersaum entlang ging es, aber der Strand war sehr breit und im Sand hat auch die Schiebehilfe nicht viel gebracht. Dann kam die nächste Herausforderung. Chioggia besteht aus Inseln und die Zufahrt über die Brücke ist ein Nadelöhr das durch eine Baustelle noch enger wurde. Zwischen hunderten Autos und LKWS radelten wir in die Stadt, erstmal nach Sottomarina, den Ferienbezirk am Meer. Ne, hier können wir uns keinen Urlaub vorstellen. Eine vierspurige Straße mit Radweg führt an den Strandbädern entlang und wir fahren bis zur Nordspitze. Die Westseite am Hafen entlang mit Blick auf die Altstadt ist viel schöner. Über einige kleinere Brücken geht es ins Zentrum. An einem Kanal finden wir ein Strassencafe und machen Mittagspause. Die Räder lassen wir dort stehen und bummeln durch die erstaunlich leere und ruhige Stadt. Klein-Venedig, das passt. Viel Wasser, Boote, Brücken und in der Mitte der breite Corso de Popolo. Ich würde gerne mit der Fähre nach Pellestrina und dort radeln, aber die Tickets kosten 45 Euro für uns 2 für 20 Minuten Überfahrten, das lohnt sich nicht. Während eines Regenschauers trinken wir noch einen Espresso und kommen dann auf einem sehr schönen Radweg immer am Kanal entlang bis zur Horrorbrücke. Erkämpfen uns einen Weg zwischen den Autos, biegen von der Hauptstraße ab und sind wieder im Radelparadies auf kleinen Straßen am Damm. Die Gewitterwolken werden drohend und als wir zuhause sind geht es los. Gegen Abend kommt die Sonne raus und wir radeln zum Abendessen. Carpaccio, schwarze Ravioli mit Stockfischfüllung, Pizza Diavolo, Bier und Wein, so schön kann Urlaub sein🤩🥰😍Leggi altro

    Venedigs kleine Schwester...

    ....so nennt man Chioggia. Nach einem Kampf mit der Parkuhr geht's Richtung Stadt. Ist ja viel kleiner als Venedig, aber in Italien ist alles laut und hektisch. Aber es lohnt sich. Mit müden Beinen wollen wir am Runner nur noch Ruhe haben.Leggi altro

    Chioggia

    Langsam wird es zur Regel….in der Nacht starker Regen, am Morgen alles verzogen und recht blauer Himmel, nur mit wenigen Wolken! Wir laufen ab dem Camperplatz ca 20 Minuten, bis wir im Zentrum von Chioggia sind.

    Chioggia zählt zu den schönsten Städten neben Venedig und wird dank seiner vielen Kanälen, Brücken und Palästen auch als Klein-Venedig bezeichnet, jedoch, mit allen Autos, Mopeds, Fischerbooten, ist das Städtchen sicherlich im 21. Jahrhundert angekommen! Es ist die gleiche Lagune wie Venedig, nur eine Nummer kleiner, vielleicht etwas authentischer, es hat fast keine Touristen nur Einheimische, vor allem heute, denn es war Markttag! Es war übrigens unser erster Markt in Italien. Immer waren wir einen Tag zu früh oder zu spät an einem Ort und verpassten somit einige Märkte. Der grosse Markt von Chioggia hat uns nun für alles verpasste, entschädigt. Übrigens ruht Chioggia, die südlichste Stadt der Lagune, wie ihre grosse Schwesternstadt, auf Pfählen in der Lagune von Venedig. Durch die Stadt zieht sich der Vena Kanal, der unter neun Brücken durchfliesst. Chioggia ist wirklich ein Besuch wert, wir haben es sehr genossen.

    Langsam geht unsere Reise zu Ende. Wir beschliessen noch einige Kilometer unter die Räder zu nehmen.

    Wir haben einen wunderschönen Platz in einem Park mit vielen Pinien in der Nähe von Bergamo gefunden. Die Fahrt war etwas ermüdend, obwohl viele Autobahnkilometer, es hatte extrem viel Schwerverkehr, man muss sich ständig konzentrieren und hat kaum ein Auge für die Umgebung.    Leggi altro

    Ravenna

    Direkt neben dem grossen Parkplatz gab es ein Restaurant und wir gönnten uns wieder mal auswärts etwas Feines. Es war sehr gut!

    In der Nacht gab es wieder Regen, am Morgen etwas bewölkt, wenige Sonnenstrahlen, also ideal für die Besichtigung von Ravenna. Ravenna ist eigentlich in der Innenstadt viel schlichter als viele andere Städte die wir gesehen haben. Daher erstaunt es, das Ravenna ab 404 n. Chr. während 300 Jahren, die Hauptstadt des weströmischen Reiches war. Danach war es die Hauptmetropole des ostgotischen Königreichs. Während der Rest Italiens immer wieder mit barbarischen Invasionen zu tun hatte, wurde Ravenna weitgehendst verschont. Vielleicht aus diesem Grunde war Ravenna ein Anziehungspunkt von vielen Künstlern, vor allem in der Mosaik Kunst waren sie wahre Meister.

    Angang Nachmittag hat es wieder zu Regnen begonnen. Wir fahren weiter nach Chioggia, das Kleinvenedig Italiens. Die Strecke führt und durch das Po Delta, wo wir selbstverständlich einen kleinen Abstecher machen. Der Zufall führt uns auch durch das kleine Städtchen Boccasette das gemäss Schild mitten im Dorf, auf dem 45. Breitengrad Nord liegt und anscheinend genau je 5000 Km vom Nord-, respektive Südpol liegen soll. Wir fahren auf schmalen Wegen, inmitten von Wasser, sehr speziell.

    Wir erreichen gegen den späteren Nachmittag unseren heutigen Camperplatz. Platz hätte es geschätzt für 200 Wohnmobile, wir sind gerade mal 6 Stück zu dieser Jahreszeit.

    Morgen besichtigen wir das Klein-Venedig, am Donnerstagvormittag findet der Markt statt. Wir sind gespannt!    Leggi altro

    Chioggia

    Heute morgen schien die Sonne so schön auf unseren Platz, dass wir Tisch und Stühle herausgeholt haben um dann in der Sonne zu frühstücken. Mit unseren Büchern blieben wir bis mittags dort sitzen, bevor wir uns ins Städtchen aufmachten. Mit dem Rad waren wir schnell da und dann machten wir zu Fuß weiter. Kleinvenedig, wie die Stadt auch genannt wird, passt sehr gut, nur viel ruhiger und nicht so viele Menschen. Die Stadt hat uns sehr gut gefallen.
    Später machten wir es uns am Womo noch gemütlich und dort wird auch heute gegessen.    Leggi altro
