    Another day at Las Gatas

    April 17 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Took one more trip to Las Gatas during the Easter weekend for a day of beach front, toes-in-the-sand lunch & snorkeling. Possibly the busiest day of the year on this particular beach. Arrived around 10AM with a larger crowd than our first trip here, but within 30 minutes, the entire beach was completely packed with local families, very few tourists. The tide was rather high as well, causing the beach to be narrower-add all the people & you get congestion, lots of it! There was a significant military (Marine) presence as well, keeping the areas safe. I don't know how they tolerate being completely geared-up from helmet to boots, dressed in full battle fatigues, carrying their rifles, walking around in hot, humid, 90⁰ F weather. At one point, a boat pulled up & several men lifted a family member out of a boat who was in a wheel chair . In total it had to have wighed over 350 lbs. They carried him out of the water onto the beach & pushed him up under the umbrellas so he could also enjoy the family & the beach. Reminded me of when the friends of the crippled man carried him up to the roof & let him down in front of Jesus. Aimee was able to convince a very young, Mexican mother to let her hold her newborn for a while. No words as the language barrier was obvious, but people & mothers around the world, regardless of ethnicity, have a common bond & interest. I find it fascinating that Aimee can project complete confidence to a total stranger in a different country & culture, a teenage mother at that, & have that young mother willingly hand over that small newborn to her. My wife has that kind of spirit. She's done this in other countries as well: Kenya, Swaziland & Ecuador, to name a few. I think we all know when you're in the presence of someone who has that special aura about them. You feel it. You sense it's presence. You can't quite explain it, but you know that it's there. It sets her apart in a very subtle, yet obvious way. It's a spirit that is present & manifests itself in ways that are real, yet seem to be in another dimension. That dimension, along with several more, are waiting for every single one of us. We tend to think we live in a three dimensional world, yet the Bible possibly gives us a small glimpse into the existence of other dimensions when, in his letter to the Ephesians, Paul states the following,
"...that you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height..."; (Ephesians 3:18 NKJV). Did you catch that? That's four dimensions! Something to consider as well is that we are originally designed for eternity, our fallen condition is not! Our bodies will have to be made new in order to function & navigate in eternity-other dimensions. This new, remade condition is how Jesus appeared in the upper room out of seemingly nowhere! We HAVE to be made new, to be like Jesus, otherwise we CANNOT exist in an eternal state! I Corinthians 15:50-53 makes it clear that we can't inherit eternal life in a corrupted state.
    I Corinthians 15:50-53 NKJV
"[50] Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. [51] Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— [52] in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. [53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality."
There are a few other references to this new status awaiting us. I believe that at some level, the Lord provides glimpses of this spirit or change & that shows itself in those moments where people who have "it", demonstrate it. It's organic & can't be faked or contrived. I believe at times I witness that spirit in my wife; the Holy Spirit. It's Jesus living within her. She will be made new & enter in His rest, His arms & into eternity with Him. In the meantime, I've been given the opportunity to care for her & present her to the Lord. I've messed this opportunity up pretty badly in my past & I'm determined not to do that again. Aimee's not perfect, she does have what I call the, "Chihuahua Spirit" as well, that surfaces occasionally, but by far, she's amazing! We ended the day with a long, hot Combi ride back to Ixtapa. On the bus was a woman who had a brand new Chihuahua puppy. Very cute & loveable, but, geeez-feisty, adorable & ferocious! How can something so adorable & cute be so scary....I know!

Changes in latitudes, Changes in attitud

    February 26 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

The longer we are here at this place the more I find myself identifying the great song writer Jimmy Buffett. We have been here almost a month now and I am beginning to see changes in our attitudes. I think we have finally begun to slow down, worry less about things and schedules or the expectations of others. We do what we want, or don't do anything if we don't want.
Any of you that know Matt, know he has always gotten up obnoxiously early like 2 AM early and he rarely drank any type of alcoholic beverage except the occasional Mike's Hard Lemonade...well that has been another change, he is more often than not sleeping until 5-6 or later.... and he has figured out how to make pretty good various flavored frozen concoctions that help him ( and me) hang on...most of them resembling Pina coladas but each day he surprises me with a new flavor twist. These drinks started out with a normal size glass or two, but the effort of walking from the couch to the kitchen, or pool to the condo for refilling got to be too much effort... yesterday he just drank from the pitcher😁 and day drinking has become almost normal, it's five o clock somewhere....I think as it turns out I might well be married to a beach bum that has been disguised as a UPS driver for many years... And I do think I like it!But in all seriousness he has worked way too hard for a really long time, I love that he is learning to relax and unwind a bit! 🍹❤️🏝️🏖️
Our days have become pretty simple, lots of leisurely mornings with much coffee and Jesus time, long walks to and on the beaches, occasional combi bus rides to grocery shop in Zihu and explore the neighborhoods, which also often includes stops at quaint little eatirees sometimes near the sea for breakfast, lunch and or coffee and being blessed by wonderful musicians who wander by and play near the tables...
We do a lot of pool time, or sitting on the patio eating queso dip and tortilla chips listening to the bird sounds and watching clouds go by.
Clothing choices are simple, I pretty much wear only flip flops, sundresses and swimsuits...I have attempted to fix my hair once or twice but it only lasts a few moments before it gets all twisted up into a messy bun as the heat and humidity is too intense. Matt's clothing choices are interesting, he has decided Easter egg colored shorts and tanks are his thing! Again what happened to UPS brown?
I am still taking pictures of our meals, which tells me I have not quite internalized the realness or permanence of our situation...it is funny we used to lovingly poke fun of our exchange students back in the day for always taking pictures of their food- but now I understand...the simple things feel more special and I guess I just want to remember all the experiences... maybe by month two I will stop these tourist/ vacationers behaviors ... Maybe not.
The best thing about being simple and slowing down is really talking to people more, when you have no time schedule to keep, you can slow down and take time to share your story and listen to others share their story.... building these relationships with people we meet along the way is simply special. You never know what God can do through these conversations, but we do now have the time to be available....

    Zihuatanejo - Last Days

    October 15, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

    September 16, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Read more

Über und Unterwasser (Teil 1 von 2)

    September 16, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Read more

Tjaja, das Leben ist schon hart. Es wird mir sicher sehr schwer fallen, die nächsten zwei Monate hier zu verbringen, Piña Coladas am Strand zu trinken und den Geschmack der frischen Meeresfrüchte zu genießen. 😎🏖️🍹Read more

    Plastico!

    April 14 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Shopping day in Zihuatanejo for the youth camp that was coming up on the 21st. We went to several locations looking for small items to put in gift bags for all the kids when they arrived. Many of these kids live in situations & circumstances most of us can't even imagine. The idea was to be able to give them a little something when they arrived. This is another short, picture-focused update. This particular store is a gigantic plastic store in Zihuatanejo that has pretty much everything you could possibly want that's made of plastic. It's all ridiculously inexpensive. The mindset one could have moving out of the states & to a foreign country is that you could literally travel with nothing & be able to buy everything you would need within a few hours or a couple days at the most. The key phrase is, "...be able to buy everything you NEED...". By far, what you need & what you want are not the same list. Most of us want way more than we need.Read more

  • Day 5

    Beach... finally!

    February 5 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Made it to the beach today, finally. Almost an 8 mile round trip & 5 hours of walking. Concerned my new Keene sandals won't survive 3 months of extended walking. Met another nice Canadian couple at a street juicing cart who took us to their rather extravagant condo, let Aimee get in the pool, gave us directions & sent us off down to a long, sandy, fantastic beach. It's actually easier for us, or maybe just me, to incorporate at some level, a reference or discussion about God & faith with new acquaintances in a foreign country then it is with people in the US I've known for years or perhaps just met-trying to process why that is. Your story is yours, it's the best, most natural way to reflect God's saving grace-share it. The Holy Spirit will guide you. Took pictures of our two grandsons toy cars at the beach access path. They gave them to us to stay connected via pictures in several places & send to them. Anyway, found our way back to the secret/"not-so-secret" path & back to yesterday's restaurant for another ridiculously inexpensive, yummy lunch which consisted solely of, "Beria's". If you haven't had these, you have yet to enjoy your future, favorite Mexican food. Back home, straight to the pool & then relaxing the rest of the day. I've discovered that these super cool shorts I brought(4 colors)I can wear all day walking all over, get in the water & sleep in. I'm literally down to wearing the same 8 pieces of clothing, one pair of sandals & $1.50 flip-flops. Since this newly discovered, "wardrobe freedom", I've also noticed an uptick in the number of times Aimee sprays Febreeze in my direction. "Nothing to see here!". We seriously can live without the vast majority of the things we spend a lifetime accumulating if we really want to... but we really don't want to. They own us, until they don't. Thinking a lot about family & friends!!! Thinking about buying an
    E-bike/scooter as well.

  • Day 4

    New way.....

    February 4 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Our new way of life consists of hanging out until noon trying to clean up some login information & navigate the ever-increasingly impossible & aggravating world of logging into websites that were supposed to make our lives easier & more secure & have accomplished nothing less than making you want to disappear off the grid-completely! 😡 We then set out to walk to the beaches in Ixtapa from our condo in La Hoyas & getting somewhat stuck because of one small, insignificant path/shortcut you have to know how to get to or it won't happen without a one hour turnaround & course correction. We found a completely inconspicuous little street restaurant where Diego, who grew up in North Carolina & his wife, had us hop on the back of their motorcycles & showed us the way, through the narrow streets, several turns, by the small church, through the small gate to the main road, smack dab in the beautiful resort of Ixtapa! There was no back support on Diego's motorcycle, so I had to hang on to the seat support & the other hand hanging on to his shoulder with 3 plates of Mexican takeout wrapped around my fingers. Took us to the beach for our first view of the ocean & THEN, rode us all the way back to La Hoyas...free! Just being nice. We took the takeout food inside, quickly jumped into the pool, hung up our clothes & ate "motorcycle tour Mexican food"! Good day. Sometimes you just have to let your life/vacation happen to you. The unplanned, unexpected is often the best.Read more
