    Sick Day for Me

    Yesterday in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Whatever this cold bug is, it got the better of me today. Still a sore throat and coughing, but developed a head ache and stomach issues. So, while everyone else went out touring, I sat on the patio baking in other sun and reading. By the end of the afternoon I was feeling better enough to go out to dinner with everyone. We went to a very cool bar high above the Douro River and ate on the terrace while watching the sunset. Afterward, we came back to the apartment and Noelle did tarot card readings for Jayme and Deb. Now it is time for bed. Tomorrow my walk resumes.Read more

    Day 18 - Porto & Decisions

    Yesterday in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

"The soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Today was a relax and explore Porto day, but truth be told I spent the day resting and contemplating what it was I want to get out of the Camino.

My friends are walking the Coastal Route and I have decided to continue on the Central route doing the last 150 miles on my own. No reflection on my traveling companions, just something I feel I need to do. We should all arrive Santiago about the same time and reconnect.

The first part of the Camino out of Lisbon was not well traveled. Arlene and I were the oldest women walking and we would go for long periods without running into other pilgrims. So I would not have felt comfortable walking it alone. But there will be more pilgrims starting their journey out of Porto, so more people will be around

Tonight we had dinner at Six Ponte Sky Bar that overlooked the river. We sat outside and the views were breathtaking.

    Tomorrow a new adventure begins!

    Last day in Porto

    Yesterday in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Porto is an old historic city and found another cathedral for my 2nd stamp today. Saw from a distance the Douro River that goes through Porto. Mostly a day of rest as our first day of walking is tomorrow. Beautiful sunny day and hoping I got my technical issues resolved with eSIM card, only 2 hours with tech support 😩

We crossed over the Metro Bridge to a little roof top bar for dinner tonight so added a few more pictures

    Day 17 - Porto!

    April 22 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

“Good company on a journey makes the way seem shorter”—-Izaak Walton

We are all in Porto! More than half way to Santiago. Today Arlene and I joined her husband (Richard), sister (Noel), and sister-in-law (Deb). We’ve rented a very cute 3 br apartment near the cathedral. Tomorrow we will explore Porto (but I may opt for another rest day while they explore to kick this cold out) and then continue on to Santiago on Thursday.Read more

    My first stamp

    April 22 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Spent day walking around Porto while waiting for air bnb to be available. Got my first stamp at Tower of Clerics, beautiful church. We picked up some pizzas and salad for at home dinner tonight and passed my first Camino shell marking. Jayme and Arlene are still fighting a cold. Air bnb is a great spot, right in the center and great back porch.Read more

    Our Campanions Have Arrived

    April 22 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Today I woke up in the hostel just across the river from where we are meeting Richard, Noelle and Deb. It was only about a mile and a half from them, but we just didn't have the energy to get there. So we took a car and met them at the rental office where we left backpacks and poles while we waited for our unit to be readied. We went to lunch at Time Out Market. It was great as we could all go to a different vendor and get just what we wanted. Afterward, we went to the Cathedral. The newbies got their first stamp while Jayme and I got another stamp and another credential. The ones we have are already nearly full. Next we went to Sport Zone and got hiking poles for Deb and Noelle. By then our rental was ready. It is very cute, 3 beds 2 baths in the middle of old town with a washer and outdoor space. And the weather has completely changed so we can enjoy. Everyone napped and we're still too tired to go out for dinner, so we ate pizza and salad. Now I am in bed again and exhausted. Hopefully, we will be able to explore Porto a bit tomorrow before we move on.Read more

    I'm in Porto

    April 21 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Grijo to Porto today. And guess what? It was cold and rainy most of the day. But we are champions and pushed on.
Most of the route was through towns and villages. But there was a rather steep and long and muddy and rocky forest section. Yep, that hill had it all! An equally treacherous descent was fun. C heck out my pics and zoom in on Jayme and you will be able to see the inclines a bit better. Hills are so hard to capture on camera.
During our day, we met a couple of our pilgrim friends, Mano from France and a lot of other places, and La from South Korea. It is always a spirit boost to stop and talk with friends, even if you need to use a translation app!
We learned the Pope died today while we were having tea and waiting for the pharmacy to open. Jayme now has conjunctivitis with her cold.
We did our laundry so we are not stinky and smelly when we meet up with Richard, Noelle and Deb tomorrow. And we went to dinner and had an excellent meal for 25 Euro each. Now medicated, I am getting ready to sleep.
We are on the other side of the river from where the cathedral is and where our stay is in Porto. We thought we were about 4-5 miles from there, but turns out our hostel is close to the bridge we need to cross and where we need to be is close to the other end. So, only a little over a mile distance! Happily, we won't have to get up too soon, and will be able to sleep in a bit. More than half walk to Santago!

Porto Portugal s a different world.

    April 21 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

The journey is something we enjoy and to get to Porto we took 2 metro trains, a bus and a short plane ride on Easter morning. This is a beautiful city bustling with tourists but our free tour by foot guide told us that 10 years ago there were few visitors in comparison. The rain cleared in the night and we’ve had a great day after a huge breakfast the guest house served us.Read more

Snapshots of a Day in Porto

    April 21 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

We registered for a Free Tour of Porto, which was attended by 10 of us - 4 from Australia, 2 from Canada, and 2 from Italy. The tour guide was a 27 year old Porto native, a bright young woman with a love of history. We were the only ones from the US. We got to see so many little corners of this funky and busy city. Porto has so many interesting looking buildings and lots of street art, along with a fair share of abandoned buildings. So many of Porto’s residents live in small and modest homes. They also love plants - many have small gardens growing in pots and planters right beside their front steps on narrow cobblestone streets.

Partway through the tour, the US political situation came up. What became very clear among everyone on the tour is that Trump is strongly disliked (one woman from Australia said she “hated his f**king guts), they each feel like the situation is having an impact on their country, and they are closely watching the unfolding US political situation.

As the discussion went on for a few minutes, I began to sense that, although we articulated our disgust with what is happening in our country and our efforts to resist, they did not really like us - because of what the US - thanks to Trump - is doing to the world, and the US is where we are from. The tour then continued, but I was happy when it finally ended and we could go on our way.

While we are enjoying our time here, I can’t deny that the political situation back home is never from from my mind. Learning that it is also very much on the minds of people from several other countries, and that they too are very worried, reminded me of just how far-reaching what is happening in the States is.

    Day 16 - Patience

    April 21 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

"Adopt the pace of nature. Her secret is patience." –Ralph Waldo Emerson

After a restless and frigid night in an unheated auberge, started walking early in the rain, of course. But we soon stopped for hot tea and I made a trip to the pharmacia next door to get eye drops for the conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) I now have. It could be caused by the cold I’m still battling or I touched a contaminated surface. There was no communication challenge with the pharmacist, as I approached her she looked at my eyes
and said ahh and went and got eye drops for me

The rain cleared around 1p but the paths were now quite muddy and slippery. A particular down hill slope was quite challenging with the boulders and rocks. But we made it from Grijo to Vila Nova de Gaia. And to our surprise we are only 1.1 miles from our Porto accommodation tomorrow where we will join Arlene’s husband, sister, and sister-in-law

Little things can really boost your spirits on the walk: a beautiful setting, nature’s beauty, a kind foreigner wishing you a Buen Camino, and running into pilgrims you met on the path earlier. Today we ran into Manu from France who we had shared an auberge with earlier and La from South Korea who sometimes we are ahead of him and other times he is ahead of us. He has the biggest smile and relies heavily on his translator to communicate. When he saw us taking a break 1/2 way up a steep hill, he was so excited to see us and took a short break with us to rest his knee

Tonight was a fabulous Portuguese dinner and I had the Picanha again. Delicious. Of course I may be biased having eaten only ham, cheese, and butter sandwiches since leaving Coimbra.

I am now snuggled in my bed in a private room and have taken all my meds. This peregrine is crashing for the night!
