    Bergsee und Ermita

    Vom Campingplatz aus geht es weiter zu einem Bergsee, der Laguna Negra. Es geht auf teilweise asphaltierten Forstwegen rund 25 km hoch auf 1700 Meter Höhe. Die Schotterpiste zwischendurch hätten wir nicht fahren müssen. Aber wenn wir schon 4x4 haben dann muss man das auch mitnehmen. Eine echte Herausforderung wird es aber nicht, erzeugt aber schöne Staubwolken im Kiefernwald. Wir fahren durch bis zum letzten Parkplatz. Das hat den Vorteil, dass es nur noch 300 Meter bis zur sehr beeindruckenden Lagune sind. Das sieht fast aus wie ein Kratersee. Allerdings werden aus den 300 Metern dann doch noch eine richtige Bergwanderung, denn es geht noch höher hinaus zu einem weiteren Bergsee. Anstrengend, aber wunderbar. Wir überlegen, ob wir die Nacht hier verbringen sollen, verwerfen die Idee aber wieder. Es ist einfach zu viel Wandervolk hier unterwegs. Also geht es weiter zum nächsten Ziel. Das verraten wir aber erst beim nächsten Mal. Denn wir unterbrechen die Fahrt unterwegs an einem Ziel, was wir mal wieder eigentlich zufällig entdecken. Eine Ermita in einer tollen Schlucht, die mal wieder von zahlreichen Geiern bevölkert ist. Vom Parkplatz aus geht es 1 km bis zur Ermita. Was für ein tolles Gebiet.     Wieder nicht aufgepasst in Geographie: entweder liegt Spanien im Norden oder wir sind in einem falschen Spanien. Heute Nacht war ich nahe dran, die Standheizung mal auszuprobieren. Gerade haben wir hier noch halb so viel Grad, wie sie zu Hause herrschen. Aber irgendwie passt das zu den 30°C, die wir vor 2 Jahren am Polarkreis hatten...     It’s just Bliss at the waterfalls

    After a saying goodbye to our ancient village refuge on the hill we go on our way. There’s promise of a spectacular waterfall on route so we head off to that. Well we are not disappointed, it is a spectacular place. Not just the waterfall itself, which is actually lots of waterfalls coming from the top of a large limestone gorge. The pools of water it creates and falls into lead into a beautiful stream surrounded by meandering paths. It has the feel of a tropical rainforest edged with trees, ferns and moss, casting cool shadows that were a haven from the strength of the sun today.
    Bliss was in her element paddling in the cool waters of the pools. She was positively beaming with happiness. I think this has been one of her favourite places so far.    Read more

    Huesca to Soria

    Today I visited the region of Aragon. Castles, bizar rockformations and sweeping running grass. Really beautiful.
    Then i drove on to Soria, where I was the only person on the site (30km from the city). Matlde and her dog Luna gave me a very intensive lesson in Spanish. As it's really cold here, and stormy windy I snuggled up in bed early.
    Distances in Spain are bigger than you think, roads are sometimes really bad, an sometimes really good, you never know.    Read more

    HOURTIN - San Sebastian

    Der Morgen verspricht einen sonnigen Tag. Bestes Wetter in Hourtin Por zum Start. Bis Mimizan Plage sollte auch noch alles besten sein. Die Strecke dorthin meist nicht aufregend, geradeaus durch endlose Pinienwälder. In Mimizan kurz geschaut ob der Atlantik noch vor Ort ist und etwas essbaren zu mir genommen. Kaum zu Ende gegessen zu es sich blitzschnell zu. Schnell den Strampelanzug angezogen und versucht dem Regen zu entkommen. Keine Chance, mehr 50km/h war wegen Sicht nicht mehr drin. Halbe Stunde war der Spuk vorbei, raus aus dem Regenkombi um ihn 10 Minuten später wieder an zu ziehen. Das hielt sich bis an den Rand der Pyrenäen, durch die ich dann einen kleinen Abstecher machte bevor ich auf San Sebastián zuhielt. Traumhafte Straßen und schöne Dörfer. Leider hatte der Wind die Kastanien runtergeschüttelt, was in den Kurven teilweise etwas Unruhe ins Fahrwerk brachte😜. Nichtsdestotrotz bei sonnigem Wetter gegen 17.30 in San Sebastián angekommen, wo Robert und Teresa mich schon erwarteten und wir e noch einen sehr schönen Abend hatten.Read more

    Bit of an anticlimax. We were up and set off early to make some good headway on the drive. We must’ve driven a good 2-3 hours each, sadly in the torrential rain for the most part. So visions of driving into gloriously sunny Spain were quickly dashed. Went through plenty of tolls though thankfully, I had preordered a toll tag for the windscreen that beeps you straight through, v easy.
    Once we hit Spain, the landscape did start to change. Straight away there were mountains though what with the rain, it feels like driving around Wales! We eventually came off the main highway and started traveling south through a national park. Very quiet around and lovely scenery/sheer drops/bridges, just a bit wet to get out and explore so we cracked on. Stopped randomly to see a side of the road natural spring water fountain - fuente agua potable - drinking water source, then carried on. Gary had booked a campsite nr Valdeavellano de Tera, Soria in the Rioja región (wine). It’s lovely and peaceful. You can tell they have actually had lots of hot, dry weather as the ground is yellow/dusty. Gary cooked dinner (burgers with an extra egg roll - see photo, don’t ask!) which was delicious. Quiet night in doing more planning, avoiding rain. Not quite the trip I hoped it would be… yet… but I’m sure it will be. Think I’m just missing everyone.    Read more

    7. Tag: Pau🇫🇷 - Abejar🇪🇸
    Spanien wir kommen! Nach einem kurzen Besuch des Dorfes Navarrenx ging es durch malerische Landschaften und Dörfer Richtung Pyrenäen und über den Col de la Pierre Saint Martin nach Spanien. Durch das wunderschöne Roncal Tal fuhren wir zur Arbayun Schlucht und bestaunten die dort lebenden Geier. Weiter zur Wüste Bardenas Reales. Über Schotterpisten ging es durch diese urwüchsige Landschaft, die auch schon oft als Filmset genutzt wurde. Über Soria mit Besuch des Klosters San Juan de Duero nach Abejar.Read more

    Cyclocross

    Restless night worrying about bears and wolves we are so deep in the woods...
    Set off on a gentle 30 mile bike loop around a huge lake/reservoir nearby. Had a relaxed stop at a small village to buy picnic supplies and have a coffee. Then off we went again unaware our route was blocked crossing the dam . This meant a choice. An extra 30k or so or a rough bike path through the woods. Ian got the casting vote. Disturbing start through a herd of cows with a massive horned bull in the middle.
    The surface got worse and then unridable sand and stones so it turned into a cyclo-cross event, pushing and lugging the bikes along for several more km than was good. There were no words spoken till we reached the road at last....
    Then things improved. Nice picnic stop and another stretch on the Santander to Valencia bike path to finish. We are friends again now.... Scenery was beautiful.    Read more

    Set off in the van from the busy campsite in Burgos and pretty soon on quiet empty roads. We had 2 stops on our journey today. First in a beautifully preserved medieval town called Covarrubias. There was a Norwegian connection as the top banana brought back a Norwegian princess for his wastrel brother. She was so lovely her sister in laws poisoned her...
    Then we went on to an 11th century monastery in Santo Domingo de Silos. Just scraped in to see the cloisters before they shut for siesta or prayers or something.
    Absolutley delicious pintxos in the town square...stuffed peppers (stuffing not determined, however. Black pudding?) and chorizo sausage cooked in cider.
    They told us the Gregorian monks had made a CD of their chants that had gone platinum so we went to a service in the church in the early afternoon but clearly got the B team...some old monk kept blowing his nose really loudly during the singing. We snuck out the back...
    Moved on to a wooded campsite by a reservoir deep in the middle of nowhere.
