    Day 6 Caminha to O- Serrallo 24km

    April 9 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    Had a very good sleep.
Slept until 6 am which is late for me.

The first boat over to Camposancos did not leave until 7:45am and I was the lone occupant.

I totally forgot about the time change in Spain ( an hour ahead) so I didn't start walking until ,9 am which is super late for me.

Today was absolutely beautiful. The Atlantic ocean has huge waves...

It was also super hot and I took many breaks to give my feet time to breath.

I met a couple who taught in Saudi Arabia for a year. They were from Southern California.....another mom and daughter walking the mom was from Louisiana.

I have yet to meet any Canadians!

There was a Korean runner that passed me saying " Let's Go!!" That is a common expression . You hear that a lot on Netflix ' Physical 100 series,!" 😂😂

A lot of the young people talk on their phones while walking.

I am beginning to feel old as a common question to me is " How old are you?" Not sure why that is happening and not just the younger group🤔🧐

The hostel that I am at tonight is deluxe!!. It overlooks the ocean.
Curtains on the beds etc...very cozy.

No supermercado so had Iciban soup and cookies for supper🤔The nice lady at the gas station offered me a chocolate 🫶

Tomorrow I will have to find my cafe con leche👍😂

    Kein Schlaf und erstes Reisetief

    April 12 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    Day 7 O Serrallo- Ramallosa 21 km

    April 10 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Beautiful peaceful start to the day. Wonderful views. Walks through the forest.

Very hot and humid though . The weather is changing tomorrow (getting cooler) which will be a welcome relief.

Finally found a place to have lunch . I have included the pics of it. It was exceptional!!

I am in what I think is a convent for tonight.
Very dorm like rooms. I am the only one here!!! Kind of creepy 🥺
The good news is that I was able to get my laundry done and the food store was close by......unfortunately no am coffee😥

    Moledo-Baiona

    April 9 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today's stage was going to be our longest walking day of the trip. We decided that our bodies and feet needed a shorter day and we found a spot during the day to jump ahead. The morning sun and view was beautiful. We got out the door a bit behind scheduled and rushed 3 miles to the boat that took us across the Minha River into Spain. We continued our walk along the coast and found a cafe to refuel. The temperature was beginning to climb, it was getting hot. In A Guardia, we decided it was time to jump ahead. After walking through town and practicing my Spanish by asking for directions we found a bus to take us North. Our first thought was to jump ahead 10 miles, after little delibration we decided to take the bus to our next home in Baiona. We still had a few miles to cover walking to our place for the night, picking up our luggage from an Albergue and grocery shopping. We ended the day eating gelato by the shoreline as the sun was setting. 12 miles.Read more

    Viana do Caselo-Moledo

    April 8 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Beautiful morning to go for a walk. The town center has many shops, churches and homes. The red rooftops go for miles. We followed the yellow arrows to the coast. Walked on paths, boardwalks, trails and pavement. We saw several old windmills along the coast. Our lunch stop was in Afife, a bit of the the path but worth it. Lunch was the best meal I've had it Portugual. It came with half a grilled chicken, salad, rice, fries and an ice cold lemonade for under $10 euros. After lunch we found a sandy beach and relaxed by the water for a bit, I went for a dip and caught a wave bodysurfing. In the evening we arrived at our house with a water view. 16.5 miles.Read more

Day 19: Stg 6-Oia to Baiona

    March 30 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 50 °F

Today was a walk along the coast from Oia and the city of Baiona. Once again I was able to walk with my new friends Don, Paula and Mary. We walked 12.5 miles - and it was sunny and little shade.

After we had a great breakfast at my hotel Casa Puertes, we gathered our things and headed out with sun and cool breeze. We saw a lot of cows, horses, dogs, goats, and cats. One cow was so funny - I started talking to her and she responded created a chorus of mooing across the field.

Also on our walk - we saw fortresses and other defense areas. This is a major area for Spain to protect.

One of stops was supposed to be a cafe but since it was a Sunday and we are in Galicia - not much is open. This lovely lady at a vacation small rental cabins took mercy and sold us some cokes and coffee. A beautiful black and white cat came to snuggle but I tried to avoid my coffee spilling and he did not forgive me We started a trend as their pilgrims stopped and joined us.

The last 3 miles was a challenge for all of us. We decided to have a peanut butter sandwich break (supplied by Don). The spot had an excellent view of the ocean.

We added to our list of countries a lovely Irish fellow who was covered up due to his pure white Irish skin.

We separated to our hotels - mine was up a huge hill that really was not that bad later after a shower. What a beautiful hotel in an old fortress. It is a mix between a medieval castle and a Galician stately home, Per the hotel, “occupies the site of the old fortified town of Baiona, founded in 1497 by the Catholic Monarchs. Its strategic position made it a key factor in the wars between England and Spain; Francis Drake attacked the town in 1585.”

The day was spiritual as we gathered people, encouraged each other and feel like we can accomplish anything. lol.

    Tag 14: Magen spielt verrückt

    March 14 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

    Strecke: A Guarda - Baiona, 29 km

    Baiona

    November 19, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    Day 10: Rubiaes to Tui

    October 29, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

    Adeus Portugal, Hola Spain!

I crossed the Minho River today, which is the border between northern Portugal and Spain. I walked about 7 km, and even though I walked slowly, I realized I can’t keep walking right now. The shin splints in my right leg are completely healed after all my mitigation efforts and rest, but my left leg is injured. I don’t know if it’s a stress fracture or not, and I probably won’t be getting an X-ray or MRI in Spain to find out, but all the people I’ve talked to, including two pharmacists, have advised me not to walk until it heals, which could take weeks. I’m going to try to see a doctor here in Tui to see if there’s anything else I can do and seek advice about continuing my walk. In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy being in a new country and seeing some of the sights I can hobble to. 😀
Even though today”s walk was difficult, it was really beautiful. It was almost completely in nature, along the river and through some villages. I only walked about 4.5 km then took a taxi to Valenca, which is on the border with Spain. I really wanted to walk across the border, which was a pretty special moment for me. Even if I can’t go further, I feel happy that I walked from Porto to Spain and that I got to see so much of this beautiful country.
I am staying in an albergue (Ideas Peregrinas, €49 for private room w/ ensuite) right beside the Tui Cathedral, and I had the good fortune to hear a concert there tonight. The acoustics in these old cathedrals are unbelievable, and it was pretty magical to hear this visiting English choir singing there. It was one of those serendipitous moments that makes traveling so fun. I ended the evening with my young German friends who are also staying here, so in spite of my injury, it was a pretty great day.
