    Day 6 Caminha to O- Serrallo 24km

    April 9 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    Had a very good sleep.
Slept until 6 am which is late for me.

The first boat over to Camposancos did not leave until 7:45am and I was the lone occupant.

I totally forgot about the time change in Spain ( an hour ahead) so I didn't start walking until ,9 am which is super late for me.

Today was absolutely beautiful. The Atlantic ocean has huge waves...

It was also super hot and I took many breaks to give my feet time to breath.

I met a couple who taught in Saudi Arabia for a year. They were from Southern California.....another mom and daughter walking the mom was from Louisiana.

I have yet to meet any Canadians!

There was a Korean runner that passed me saying " Let's Go!!" That is a common expression . You hear that a lot on Netflix ' Physical 100 series,!" 😂😂

A lot of the young people talk on their phones while walking.

I am beginning to feel old as a common question to me is " How old are you?" Not sure why that is happening and not just the younger group🤔🧐

The hostel that I am at tonight is deluxe!!. It overlooks the ocean.
Curtains on the beds etc...very cozy.

No supermercado so had Iciban soup and cookies for supper🤔The nice lady at the gas station offered me a chocolate 🫶

Tomorrow I will have to find my cafe con leche👍😂

  • Baiona Beckons

    September 23, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

It's Tuesday morning, the seventh day of walking. There's No sleeping in because our suitcases have to be in the lobby by 8am for our pickup service, and with that hour time change, 8am really feels early to be fully packed and ready to go. It's still very dark outside since the Sun does not really truly peak over the mountain ridge to our east until after 10am.

It's fun to see some whimsy along the way: a lone sail boat, a wind mill, a of painted rocks for inspiration, and a storage area for funny cheerful
    parade floats.

I finally found a pair of earrings that I wanted in a cute little shop where the artist-in-residence was so entertaining. He pointed out that Massachusetts was straight across the ocean. I now have my Camino scallop shell earrings to wear as I walk.

It's our final day of walking along the actual Atlantic coast this afternoon. We will be on the Bay and then inland after that. Humidity is still very high and it must have rained last night because the ground is wet as we climb over the roads and trails. The path has lot of switch backs, we feel like we're going South instead of North for a long ways and then we climb over the peak cutting off eastward before the point unfortunately. I think this climb is almost exactly like climbing to the peak at Shiloh Park back home.

Although weve hiked separately, we all arrive in Baiona at about the same time. For lunch, I introduced Kiki Joe and Debbie to one of Michel's favorite dishes : spanish potato tortilla (really a potatoe omelet). This one is very delicious and includes gooey cheese. We also have the most amazing scallops (notice they include the tail), and croquettes with blue cheese.

The others take a rest as I head out to explore the historic fort with its wrap around parapet that provides gorgeous views of the bay and the hillside we just crossed over. I discover that Columbus sailing ship Pinta gathered water here on her last port call before heading out to discover America, and the Santa Maria docked here first on its return.

All 6 of us gather later for drinks in a quirky bar with a sewing motif (old sewing machines on display and dress patterns as wallpaper). For dinner, we sit next to our hotel on the marina with views of the fort and I split a tasty Blue Lobster with Joe .

Today's journey 15km (10 miles) plus side wanderings of about 5km. Completed 148 of 274 planned, plus sidetrips of 20km.

Day 5: Into Spain and O Serrallo- 12 mi

    August 21, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Today, we finished our Portugal leg and ventured into Spain. This is my (Jack's) 39th country, and it took way too long to cross Spain off the list. We went to the grocery store for some breakfast food, then boarded a somewhat sketchy boat to taxi us to the other side of the river. Once we landed, we headed back north and a little west to get back to the coast. It was up and down over a ridge, and we got some really good time along the Spanish Atlantic coast. It took a little adjustment to now use Spanish. We both said thank you in the wrong language or forgot to change Bon Caminho to Buen Camino as we greeted other Pilgrims. It is very nice to greet people using "hola" and much easier for us to communicate here. One highlight is we met a German lady from Hamburg and we kept switching from English to German to Spanish while speaking to her - it was comical.

Other highlights are the beautiful coast with horses and cows, a meditation space with water, and a beautiful church with a nice lady who gave us a stamp on our pilgrim credentials and invited us to stay for mass (we prayed and then left before the service). We met two girls from Bamberg, Germany, which is close to where we lived in Bavaria and also met two girls from Venezuela and England. We didn't see a ton of other pilgrims, but some to say hi to.

My ankles were feeling much better today. I figured out my socks were too tight at the band, and they were cutting off the circulation. I cut my socks and felt like a new person. I hope the swelling and redness go down soon. We have another fairly light day coming up, so we hope to get healthy. Tara has a couple of nagging blisters and sore shoulders and back. But we found this stuff called Star Balm (kinda like Biofreeze, but you spray it) at a pharmacy, and it's magic. It makes your skin tingle and smells like Vick's Vapo Rub. Most of all, it really helps with muscle pain. Tara is a big fan. :)

We had to make the brand switch on our drinks from Portuguese to Spanish. Estrella Galicia is the local beer, and there is a local cider that was pretty good. See you all tomorrow, and thanks for all of the prayers for our health. I think tomorrow we will be getting back closer to full strength. We have just under 100 miles to go!

    Ramellosa

    May 13, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    April 30, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    Day 7 on the Camino

    October 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Started our day with an amazing breakfast at our guest house in Villadesusa after which we headed off down the rural roads on a cool morning. Came across the local town cemetery. Not too far along the same road we discovered another pilgrim cairn with many more stones than what we have previously seen. It seems the local people are contributing some beautifully painted stones. I of course liked the cat one. We walked into As Marinas and stopped for lunch at a beautiful hotel with an upper patio overlooking the water and ordered a couple of delicious salads. Then on to Baiona - another beautiful town of 12,000+ people - where we visited the castle overlooking the city and then had a tapas dinner and some great Spanish Vermouth.Read more

    Day 6 on the camino

    October 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We left Portugal and traveled by a "water taxi" to Spain. Another day of beach, forest and road travel with some lovely stops along the way. We took Alayne Sinclair's advice finally and stopped for a "second breakfast" of "pum king" cake and almond cake with cappuccino. We stopped for lunch in Portocelos and had some great food - calamari and a bocadillo - but more importantly we enjoyed a beautiful view. Finally we arrived Villadesuso and our beautiful guest house. Mary and I were the only guests. Our host drove us into town for a great dinner (two amazing salads) overlooking the water and picked us up to bring us home and we are now sitting in the comfy lounge enjoying some quiet time. Finally, Mary's photo of the donkey outside her window at our guest house.Read more

Day 8 O Serrallo to Baiona

    September 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

It was great sleeping in a room by myself! Woke up at 7:30, breakfast at 8:00. Breakfast was so good! Breads, pastries, coffee, orange juice, fruit, meat, cheese, hard boiled eggs, yogurt and cereal.
I walked on the PO552 which took me around the mountain rather than following the Camino over the mountain. It was all road walking, but there is a nice wide yellow path to follow, ocean views and a cool breeze.
First stop, ice cream and then off to find the Albergue. After a shower and laundry I walked down to the waterfront for dinner. Most of the restaurants had Paella as a special, so I picked one with the best view of the harbour. So good!

    Oia #6

    June 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

#6camino an easy walk along the Atlantic coast. Incredibly peaceful and only a slight breeze. After a catch-up coffee with US and Hungarian walkers we arrived in the fishing village of Oia with its historic Monastery of Santa Marta de Oia. Our home Puerta Casa is delightful and there is an amazing restaurant on the waterfront. I am writing this from our ‘secret garden’ by the sea. I loved meeting up with my border collie friends from Hungary, Pancake and Pressa🐾🐾❤️🇵🇹Read more

    Oia 18.2km (Hotel Glasgow)

    October 1, 2024 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 19 °C

Breakfast was spent scanning various weather forecasts with the consensus being some rain with a chance of clearing around midday, so off we set in the drizzle with our wet gear on. Following the Camino trail through A Guarda town we found ourselves walking along a coastal path with a rocky shoreline to our left. The drizzle continued off and on till we got to a cool little cafe at Portocelos, where we dried out for a while. Onward we trooped over cobbles, paths, gravel, pine needles, tiles and sand. We didn’t come across any villages until Oia where we had a full lunch, thinking that we may not find anything at the end. So with a full belly and a couple of glasses of wine on board we hit the path for our final four kilometres of today’s walk, checking into the Hotel Glasgow with tired feet but happy to see a spa bath in our room that will get used tonight.Read more
