    Pamplona to Cirauqui

    April 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

We started our day at 7:00 today.
Blue skies and perfect weather to enjoy the magnificent landscape ahead of us. The pictures do not do justice to the beauty surrounding the trail. A never-ending vastness of all shades of green and yellow.
The ascent to Alto del Perdón and subsequent descent turned out to be extremely challenging. That and the 31 km covered left us breathless, in pain, and ready for a spa.
But we pushed through the agony of the rocky terrain despite my sprained ankle. Mid-way, we stopped for a Spanish tortilla snack and a drink, which gave us the energy to arrive at our destination.
We met many pilgrims today from England, Spain, and Taiwan. But none of them went as far as Cirauqui, since we have not seen them at the only albergue in town.
We have a shorter day tomorrow (only 24 km), but right now we are hoping our feet will be ready to cover them.

    More of Pamplona

    April 17 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

Another day to chill and rest my foot, although we ended up walking almost 10 km.
Lots of tourists in town because of the long weekend.
We have a room facing one the busiest narrow streets and the noise coming from the bars stopped at 7:00 am this morning!!!
By 11:00 am. People were out again and drinking beer and wine while we were having our coffees!

We walked around this beautiful city surrounded by amazingly landscaped parks.

We’ll leave at 7 am tomorrow to return to our Camino.

    Larrasoana to Pamplona

    April 16 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

    Touring amid the Camino

We thought today was going to be an easy day, but we ended up walking 23 km.
We stopped at a medical center when arriving in Pamplona and the injury is not bad enough to send me home quite yet.
We checked in at the hotel, grab some lunch, took a bus to get some rain gear at a sports store, took a 3 hour walking tour of the city, and then went for some pinchos, beer, and sangria (following the doctor’s order… and Andy’s).
It is amazing how we all stay at different albergues, we all start at different times and yet, we get bumping into each other along the way. It is hard to explain but it keeps happening!!!!
We may lose contact with the known crowd though, since we have decided to stay one more night in Pamplona.

Camino Day 5-Zubiri to Pamplona (Part 1)

    April 9 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Today was the longest day so far! Another day filled with amazing history and beauty. The terrain was grueling at times with up to 20% grades to navigate up and down. The Camino has proven to be day after day of LEG/GLUTE workout day! I'm doing bicep curls and presses with my backpack at the end of each day to hopefully keep my arms as strong as my legs will soon be! 💪🏻🦵🏼Read more

Camino Day 5-Zubiri to Pamplona (part 2)

    April 9 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Part 1 & 2 because I walked a total of 17.25 miles today and took a LOT of photos! As with all the days before, the area is rich in historical buildings and bridges dating back to Roman times. The views were amazing. Pamplona was very crowded with hustle and bustle, which was a bit overwhelming. After checking into my room, I was simply too tired to go find a place to eat, so I walked one block to a grocery store... deciding that some meat, cheese, and fruit would be enough sustenance. I also stopped at the farmacia and got bath salts/ bubbles since my room had a huge tub in it. It was a perfect end to a physically demanding day. 💜Read more

    Much better day!

    April 5 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

So, today was day 5 of walking and u feel like I’m getting some things sorted out. For one thing, I maybe don’t want to be off stage so much. The last couple of days it led to very solitary walks, and while I enjoyed them - while I enjoyed today’s walk, I do want to connect with some folks at least sometimes. So I pushed a little today, walked 27-28 km and caught up with my group. Or a lot of them anyway as we all seemed to congregate at the municipal here in Estella.

I recognized it as soon as I walked in, and when I opened up my WiFi to connect, I didn’t need to enter the password. It remembered me! Aww! It’s the little things :-)

So yes, I did stride right past a very well marked turn, almost first thing this morning, but it was a 20 minute delay, tops, and it yielded the photo of the big rapeseed field under that sky. I just wish that photo could capture the depth of silence I encountered there. So beautiful.

Then from the sublime to the best donut I have ever eaten, and I mean ever. The coffee was also amazing.

The bridge today makes those medieval ones look like youngsters -it’s Roman! And the picture of the rocky path I am pretty sure is remains of the Roman road.

Final update: despite here being almost no one around to see it, I put my sign out this afternoon! No chatting happened. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Went to Mass tonight, received a blessing along with two other pilgrims I attended with, which was nice. It was a good day!

Off stage in Trinidad de Arreglar

    April 3 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

You know you’re off-stage (the stops popularized in the major guidebooks) when you’re the only one at your albergue for hours, then think it’s going to be just you and a friendly young Brazilian guy, and then a couple hours later two more trickle in. High contrast from Roncesvalles!
It was a pretty easy, pleasant walk from Zubiri, in light rain the whole time. I walked a lot of the day with Pete, from Wales, then he, like the majority of pilgrims, went on to Pamplona.
I am checking off the historical thing staying here, but it’s quite…austere. Not exactly heated, which is not unusual in spring, and WiFi is available only in the entryway area, across the garden from the dorm area. And no microwave! And no electrical plug in the dorm so I’m perched in the kitchen writing this while my phone charges. In other words, I’m living the pilgrim life! No worries, there’s beer and snacks in the vending machine. All is well.
That Brazilian put me to shame, by the way. He started from Roncesvalles THIS MORNING! Said it was only 11:00 AM when he arrived in Zubiri so he decided to just keep going. Well!
The photos are of my albergue, the medieval bridge right next to it, my dorm, the attached also medieval chapel, the courtyard and the sign for the local town, where I found some lunch and snacks earlier today. Also a slug - for you, dad! And some beautiful European doors, of which there are so many! This American just gawks at it all.
And, last minute update - the heat has kicked in. I think I’ll have a beer.

Stage 5: Puente La Reina to Estella

    March 26 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

    686.8 km to go!

Today was full of old Roman roads and bridges as well as vineyards and lush valleys. We ended the day with mass at St. John the Baptist. The altar was spectacular with statues of Jesus's baptism, saints burning in caldrons and John the Baptist waiting to be beheaded. It is easy to forget that for centuries the art in the churches communicated with an illiterate medieval audience. I find it interesting to contemplate the messages in the sacred art.Read more

Stage 4: Pamplona to Puente La Reina

    March 25 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

    710.6 km to go!

Today was a tough day (for no particular reason), but we made it.

We are getting into a rhythm: early start, mid-morning coffee, second breakfast, hike completion, rest, food, sellos, church, early to bed.

We have met so many interesting people from around the world. I can't emphasize enough the beauty of the Camino community.

    Pamplona, cheers.

    July 11, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Walked 17 km to Pamplona today, so it was fairly relaxed. Although some blisters are starting to appear. Much of today was in the shade, thankfully as temperature climbed to 31 by lunch time.
Stopped at Villava for a really tasty potato tortilla. Enjoyed a chat with the grandkids back home about 5 km into the walk, and caught up with Phil while waiting for our hostel to open.
Lovely place tonight with individual pods to sleep in. We have spent the afternoon walking around Pamplona, visiting some bars, and joining in with the locals. Very cool vibe, and definitely worth the stay. Many pilgrims have been encouraged not to stay here due to inflated prices, but I think staying is totally worth it.
