    Raining this morning as expected. So many pilgrims today.... Honestly I must have seen hundreds!

    I am so happy that I decided to walk this part of the Camino instead of starting from Lisbon.

    Not many pictures due to the rain. I was fortunate to find a bar that was able to serve me without having to wait a long time.

    Was totally drenched when I arrived in Caldas del Reis.
    Very interesting Albergue. It is a series of bedrooms with 3 single beds in each room. The lady wanted to put me with an old man and I said No!

    I am with 2 German ladies. I can't believe how much German I am hearing.

    2 more days until Santiago.

    Heute wurde ich nur bissel nass und der Weg 23 km völlig entspannt.
    Ich habe das Gefühl 23 km ist nix mehr....
    Der Weg war schön aber gemessen an den anderen Tagen unspektakulär.

    Heute mal eine private Unterkunft gebucht ist auch gut.

    Jetzt noch 2 Etappen dann bin ich in Santiago.

    Day 16: Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis

    Today’s walk was more mentally challenging than physically challenging. I knew it was going to be a long walking day, and I’ve got three of these in a row before I get to Santiago on Wednesday, so I really had to psych myself up. I am not one of those people who gets a great endorphin rush from physical activity. I mean, I wouldn’t really know because I hate exercising. 😂 So I just had to tell myself that all I’m doing is walking. It’s not really that hard. I also tried to stop thinking about all the km left to go, and just think about being in the moment I’m in. Once I got going, I was fine and by the time I got to my hotel, I was a happy camper. 😃

    Much of the day was in the forest, which was beautiful. It started raining about an hour into my walk, which was actually kind of nice. I don’t really mind walking in the rain, although I got pretty warm in my poncho. I also knew I had the hot springs and a massage in Caldas de Reis to look forward to, so that definitely helped! I’m staying in what once was a grand hotel, a bit outdated, but still very nice (Balneario Hotel Davila, €74 for room with breakfast, €50 for massage and soak in the hot spring mineral bath).

    No serious issues with my legs today. I’ve been doing stretches for my legs and shins each morning with a YouTube video I found. I’m also putting ice on my shin at the end of each day. I still have quite a bit of swelling by the end of the day and my shins are sore, but not the terrible pain I was having a few days ago. I’m so grateful for that.

    Caldas de Reis 24.1km (Hotel Cruceiro)

    The subject of conversation at the breakfast table amongst the pilgrims was a) what does your forecast say? and b) how wet are we going to get? We had a plan to get away early and make a start before the rain and that worked for about 50m till our trusty ponchos were donned. So for the next two hours we walked through the suburbs and ever increasing waterlogged trails. We were so dogged in our travels that we missed the first and only cafe which is very unlike us. So it wasn’t until 17km into our mission that we sat down for some lunch, with the sun having burst through the clouds. Shoes came off as we ate some home cooked chicken empinadas and coffee. The remainder of the walk was enjoyed in t-shirts with us passing a milestone marker of less than 50k to Santiago de Compostela, two days walking after today. There seemed to be more pilgrims on the Camino, possibly having been on the Portuguese Central route and now joined to our Coastal route. Passing another cafe proved too hard so in we went for a beer and an ice cream. The last couple of kilometers into Caldas de Rais we spent talking to a young English couple who have lived in Porto for seven years.     Psalm 131 Content in the Lord

    Every morning we get up and prepare to eat breakfast and walk for the day. The first few days were a rush, some combination of adrenaline, excitement, and the daunting task of miles ahead of us.

    Today’s Psalm reminds us that a life in the Lord is not one of get up and run but one of joy and rest. The Lord is not anxious or in a hurry. He longs to be with us and give us what this life on earth never can, a hope and a future.

    As we walk today we commit to paying attention. Seeing God in the small details and receiving His joy there. May we be people who walk a living liturgy of life because God is our place of contentment.    Read more

    Hotel Via XIX in Caldas de Reis

    We were on the road from Pontevedra by 8:15am.
    The walk was good, even though long. We didn't have any big inclines today. Whew!
    We stopped twice to eat rest and have a beer with Camino friends it was nice. We had 3 young military men jog by us today, and michelle could hardly contain herself.
    Like I said before, you never know what you're going to encounter on the camino. As we work our way closer to Compostella,
    We are starting to see more people stop on the side of the trail. Adjusting something on their backpacks, changing their socks, taking a drink of water, rubbing their feet, some people limping, etc..
    But one thing everyone has in common. They continue to move forward💙💪

    12. Etappe Caldas del Reis-Padrón

    Im Frühtau zu Berge wir geh'n,fallera,
    es grünen die Wälder, die Höh'n, fallera.
    Wir wandern ohne Sorgen
    singend in den Morgen,
    noch ehe im Tale die Hähne krähn. Noch vor acht waren wir putzmunter wieder unterwegs nach Padrón. Nach kurzer Zeit haben wir auch schon Michael, einen Australier aus unserer Camino Family getroffen und hatten ein schönes , tiefsinniges Gespräch. Auch wenn wir trocken starten konnten wollte der freundliche , galizische Regen uns auch heute begleiten 🙈☔️😂. Nach ein paar kleinen Stops sind wir dann auf dem Sonntags Markt in Padrón gelandet wo wir auch in der ersten Pulperia eingekehrt sind . Wein gab es hier nur flaschenweise und Kaffe gabs mit Orujo. Wir haben uns noch Krake gegönnt , ein wenig schleimig aber lecker . Die Ferienwohnung heute ist toll, sehr sauber und mit WASCHMASCHINE!Read more

    Xl. CALDAS DE REIS - PADRÓN

    First things first - erstmal Cappuccino ☕️ und ein Pastel de Nata auf die Hand und dann kann die Reise zum letzten Hostel losgehen… bei Regen versteht sich! 🌧️

    Heute hatten wir alle das Bedürfnis nochmal allein unterwegs zu sein. So bin ich mit Francesca gestartet, wir haben uns aber recht schnell getrennt und uns nur zufällig bei der einen oder anderen Pause getroffen.

    Mir ist aufgefallen, dass man natürlich ganz anders Menschen kennenlernt wenn man allein unterwegs ist, als zu zweit oder in einer Gruppe und es war schön sich heute nochmal mit ein paar neuen fremden Menschen zu unterhalten und ein kleines Stück geneinsam zu gehen. Aber auch die Zeit allein war schön und ich habe versucht es zu genießen.

    So habe ich kurz mit Anja 🇩🇪 aus Thüringen gesprochen, die sich zum Beispiel fragte warum überall (an Haustüren, Autos, …) Ginster hängt und ich erklärte ihr, dass das ein Ritual ist, welches böse Hexen fernhalten und Glück bringen soll. Das hatte Nana von einer Spanierin erfahren. Und ich wusste jetzt auch, dass das Grünzeug Ginster heißt 😅

    Danach traf ich noch zwei Österreicher 🇦🇹 einer sprach mich, mit meinem Ginster in der Hand, an „Oh, for me? Thank you! 😉“. Und da ich tatsächlich drei Zweige hatte, teilte ich mit den beiden und erklärte auch ihnen was es damit auf sich hat 🤗

    An einer Wand voller Polygonum capitatum - weißte Bescheid! „Pink Pin Heads“ oder auf deutsch „Knöterich“… haben wir gegoogelt, hatten nämlich beide keinen Plan was das ist 😅 habe ich Stefanie 🇺🇸 aus New York kennengelernt, die mit 4 anderen Frauen auf Reisen ist, welche sich vorher nur teilweise kannten. Und wie bei uns gehen sie manchmal gemeinsam und manchmal getrennt, verbringen dann aber die Abende zusammen 😊

    Und zu guter letzt waren da noch Marie und ihr Mann aus Alabama 🇺🇸 die mich in einem „Café“ ansprachen, da wir uns unterwegs schon ein paar mal gegenseitig überholt hatten 😅 die beiden haben sich in Berlin kennengelernt wo sie für eine Zeit lebten 🫶🏼 und es gab mein erstes Bier unterwegs, ich glaub danach hatte ich leicht einen sitzen 😅 waren ja aber auch nur noch 3-4km zu gehen🍺

    Als dann am Nachmittag endlich die Sonne rauskam gabs noch ein Eis mit Nana und später eventuell noch 2 Bierchen mit Raquel und Francesca… Motto des Abend: What happens at the camino, stays at the camino 🙈😅

    Morgen ist einfach schon der letzte Tag. Es ist so verrückt und ich habe gemischte Gefühle! Auf der einen Seite freue ich mich es durchgezogenen und geschafft zu haben, auf der anderen Seite will ich auch nicht, dass es vorbei ist. Ich habe so tolle und interessante Menschen kennengelernt und es ist spannend wie nah man sich in so kurzer Zeit kommen kann. Dass man dann ab Dienstag wieder getrennte Wege geht und in anderen Ländern lebt ist irgendwie total strange und ich bin sehr gespannt was die Zeit bringt und ob wir uns wiedersehen 🥲

    X. PONTEVEDRA - CALDAS DE REIS

    REGEN! REGEN! REGEN!!!!
    Einfach den ganzen Tag! Nachts hatte es schon angefangen und einfach bis 16 Uhr nicht mehr aufgehört.
    Die Frage war: Können wir das schaffen? Jo, wir schaffen das! 😅

    Wir haben erst versucht das Schlimmste abzuwarten aber gut, das war wohl nichts! Also wurden die Füße heute etwas anders prepared und zwar mit Müllbeuteln über den Socken und dann ab in die Schuhe 🧦 hat tatsächlich ziemlich lang gehalten. Nachdem Abschied von ein paar anderen Pilgern, die ich teilweise erst am Abend vorher kennengelernt hatte, oder von Maria 🇦🇹 die ich immer wieder in dem einen oder anderen Hostel getroffen hatte, war dann 10:30 Abmarsch… naja, da hab ich erstmal Nana, meine kleine Regenponcho-Kuh einsammeln wollen, haben uns aber vorab noch ein Pastel de Nata und einen Cappuccino gegönnt 🙌🏼 Ist ja schließlich Wochenende, da kann man auch etwas entspannter in den Tag starten. Dann ging’s aber los, also nachdem wir noch bei Ale-Hop waren und hier und da das ein oder andere Foto gemacht hatten 😅 bei strömendem Regen, insgesamt 26 km bis nach Caldas de Reis.

    Wir hatten uns übrigens für den normalen Weg entschieden. Für den spirituellen würden wir wohl leider einen Tag länger brauchen und die Zeit haben wir nicht. Vielleicht beim nächsten Mal 😉 schön war auch, dass ich nicht der einzige verpeilte Mensch bin, denn irgendwo lief uns Pedro noch mal über den Weg, der die Abzweigung für den spirituellen Weg verpasst hatte und dann das Stück wieder zurück musste 🙈

    Ich muss sagen, es war scheiße, aber auch wahnsinnig lustig 😅 Klar, Sonnenschein wäre toll gewesen, aber wir hätten lang nicht so viel erlebt und gelacht wie bei diesem Hamburger Schietwetter 🌧️ durch Matsch, durch Pfützen und überschwemmte Flüsse… ungelogen. Irgendwann war es wirklich nach dem Motto „nach müde kommt blöd“ und wir haben so viel gelacht! Ändern konnten wir das Wetter nicht, nur das Beste draus machen! Und das haben wir!

    Nachdem wir ohne Schuhe einen über die Ufer getretenen Fluss durchquert hatten ging’s die letzten 10 km in Socken und Adiletten weiter. Unser Style wurde auf jeden Fall hart gefeiert und wir hatten unseren Spaß!

    Im letzten Café trafen wir noch Patricia aus Kalifornien und sie meinte „endlich treffe ich dich wieder ich habe vor einigen Tagen ein tolles Bild von dir gemacht und hatte gehofft, dass ich dich nochmal treffe um es dir zu schicken“ 🥰

    18:30 hatten wir es dann auch endlich mal geschafft und als Belohnung unseres Tages hatten wir die Zeit zum Wäsche waschen verpasst… nice! Danke für nichts Universum 😅 also ab zum nächsten Waschsalon und in der Zwischenzeit erstmal ein Stück Pizza snacken ✌🏼

    Zuletzt habe ich meine Schuhe noch ganz fachmännisch im Bad mit dem Föhn versucht zu trocknen, aber hey, soll morgen eh wieder geregnet LIEBEN WIR!!! 🥴

    Es sind so vielen lustige Dinge unterwegs passiert, so viel lustiges wurde gesagt, aber ich habe nichts notiert und bekomme nicht mehr alles zusammen, aber das ist ok. Es bleibt ein Tag den ich in Erinnerung behalten werde 🫶🏼

    Day 9 walking

    11 miles today. Pretty tired. So I’m keeping this short. Our first cloudy day. Rained a little. Music made my day-listened to some late 80’s alternative and my book, The Hundred Years of Lenny and Margot, and Polly K. on Sobercast. I think I’ve hit a bit of a wall and my knee hurts. I’ll be fine. Had delicious homemade yogurt with honey and nuts for lunch. Grateful ☺️Read more
