    Blackout!

    April 28 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

So, the bed race, day one, turned out well. We started in the dark, around 6:30 and had a beautiful walk. We cruised into Portomarín plenty early and were actually the first to arrive at the municipal albergue. E needed to wait two hours for it to actually open. As time went on a good number of us formed a happy line on the benches in front, with people taking turns making beer runs to the restaurant across the way. Very convivial!

However, once we got to our beds and of course immediately plugged in our phones - nothing. Hmm. Turns out nearly all of Spain had no power, along with parts of France and Portugal. Oh no! We couldn’t charge our phones and internet then disappeared. We went out looking for food and had drinks and a great cheese plate since there was no hot food. We also stood in a queue at the supermercado where they let several people at a time into the dark store. We had to take a picture of the item and its price for each thing we selected so they knew what to charge us. I won’t lie - there was an urge to hoard!
It was still out this morning and we were so happy h to eventually find a cafe with a gas stove because - coffee!! A couple hours later as we approached yet another bar e saw someone paying for something with a card. Gasp! Power was back! We immediately ordered hamburgers.
Which we needed, because we agreed we would get up even earlier this morning because the bed situation looked even worse. After some drama though it all worked out, and we even all went and had half hour massages that felt amazing! Tomorrow we have beds reserved. And, presumably, electricity. It will seem so relaxed!

    Day 10: Lugo rest day

    April 25 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    Distance: 0km
    Elevation gain: 0ft
    Emotions: frustrated, apprehensive, sore

Today has been a tough lesson!

It’s strange how pain can shift your entire perspective. I’ve always wanted more from my body, wishing to be slimmer, fitter, stronger. But today, I’ve been reminded to appreciate what I already have: a body that moves, carries me, and has kept me healthy until now. I took it for granted that I could walk for hours each day without a second thought. But today, I’m grounded, stuck in bed, hoping the ache in my knees fades by tomorrow. It’s humbling. And oddly, it has made my appreciate myself more.

I love my body for carrying me through this walk and through all the other wild, wonderful things I’ve thrown at it over the years. So I think it deserves more gratitude and care. That starts with real rest today, and maybe (if it comes to it) swallowing my pride and catching a bus tomorrow. Fortunately, the Spanish MotoGP kicks off today, so at least I’ve got some high-speed entertainment to keep my spirits up.

I did go out this morning, which was probably a little naughty as my knees protested the entire way! I visited Lugo Cathedral, where I bumped into Neil, so we meandered around slowly. It’s a beautiful inspiring place, but you can’t help wonder at the wealth and splendour of the Catholic religion. In comparison to the quiet and humble pilgrims that visit. I snuck some cheeky photos before we headed off for a coffee at a lovely patisserie with the yummiest coffee and pastries. As we were leaving, we bumped into Lars, who was on a mission to find nail scissors. It’s such a joy how naturally time flows with these lovely people. There’s never any awkwardness or doubt, just a warm certainty that when you see each other, it’ll be met with a smile. These friendships are simple, safe, and effortlessly comforting.

After my little jaunt into town, I hobbled back to the hostel, buying some new baggy trousers on the way 😇 and got back into bed.

I will try to head out again later for something to eat but I won’t go far.

Day 9: O Cadavo to Lugo

    April 24 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    Distance: 30km (18miles)
    Elevation gained: 2,100ft
    Emotions: exhausted

I am lying on my bunk, where I have been for the last 2 hours, resting. Today has been the hardest day by far, despite the relatively low elevation. I think everyone found it hard, I was in a great deal of pain thanks to my worn out knees.

The heat climbed slowly but continuously throughout the day, and I think each of us kept counting down the kms to this beautiful city. Luckily for me, I caught up with Georgio, Marie and Alesandro just outside the city limits and their high spirits and thirst for life kept me going for the remaining distance until I could take a cold shower and collapse on my bed before having to run a few errands.

It wasn’t all bad today though and I started the morning early in high spirits. The light was slowly ascending over the horizon spreading beautiful colours across the surrounding countryside and I had great faith that it was going to be a good one. The mountains were replaced by rolling hills and meadows with eucalyptus and pine trees spread neatly amongst the patchwork of fields.

Despite the pain in my knees, I kept my chin up and kept going. Very very glad for a rest day tomorrow though!

    Day 19 Portomarin

    April 21 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

A 23km day and so far walked 421km. I think I have about 200km to go
I walked some of the day in the poncho but it was mostly dry. The beginning of the day was quite busy as a whole bunch of new people (most) start here,Sarria, but as I walked more, the mob spread out and it turned out to be a nice walk (no need to elbow people haha SH). You know I keep telling people at home, ah the Camino is doable, just go at your own speed and you'll be fine. BUT those km still need to be walked and most is up or down. Not so much flat and honestly I don't know if everyone can do it. I am tired at the end of the day. I keep thinking of that 78 yrs lady I met that was supposed to do the big climb same day as me...wonder what happened? Did she make it in that weather?? Did she try or just taxi it?
Horreos are Galician grain storage they used in the old days. They are now all national monuments and you cannot destroy or remove them from your property. The ones with crosses used to belong to the church and of course that 's where's you stored your share to the church. Today since you can't remove them, people use them like a shed to store summer patio furniture..it's true, maybe not your lawn mower since they're pretty high up 😁
Well I'm blabbing since most people now are not very friendly, no more holas or buen caminos, they just pass you without a word. Only 1 more day then I skip to Santiage on Wednesday. I like this pick and chose Camino😆 Thursday new territory 🙃🙃🙃🤗
    RIP Francis😔

Day 15 Lugo to A Seixas

    March 10 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

    Distance 32KM
    Ascent TBC
    Descent TBC

Good sleep last night so had an early morning leaving the Roman walled city of Lugo. (7 ish) Cool place, albeit a little strange seeing so many people after spending what seems like ages in the hills.. Also a sign that Santiago draws nearer..

A good 17km under my belt, I arrived in San Roman at the bar.. A wonderful sight seeing all of the pilgrims I have met sitting together outside eating and drinking.. With many days of solitude it was great to spend the rest of today’s hike, talking with another of the Pilgrims.

Communal dinner this evening I believe so that should be fun..

And now we are four, Sophie has arrived and brought the spirit with her. We will all walk into Santiago together. Beautiful day, walking once again in the mystical early morning fog, which cleared to a very spectacular day. Today has been some of the prettiest scenery we’ve had, green fields, stone walls, incredible fences, we could have been walking through a happy fairytale. Oh, and spectacular butterfly’s, they make it all the more magical. Not long to go now. 🦋🍁🍂Read more
