    Chasing Don Quixote to Corauqui

    Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Long day. 15.44 miles with a 2K elevation gain. We climbed out of Pamplona to Alto Del Perdon. A high ridge and long accent (and then descent) with windmills and a well known, to Camino travelers at least, metal sculpture.

One of the many reasons I chose to walk The Camino was to honor some friends whose lives were cut short. Today turned out to be Susan Snodgrass day.
Susan was our dear friend in CO. She was a marathon runner and all round amazing athlete from Florida and loved to hike. We climbed many 13K mountains and at least one 14K together. She was an expert at identifying CO high mountain wild flowers and especially loved the purple ones. We were blessed to know her and looked forward to seeing each other every year but life had other plans as it sometimes does and we lost her just after her 62nd birthday.
Today, as I was really feeling the struggle and pain of the miles and constant climbing I began to notice purple flowers along the path. First, tiny ones then larger ones mixed in the verdant fields of barley and wheat growing along The Way. I realized my struggles were insignificant compared to what she must have endured and that motivated me to keep moving.
We miss you Susan but know you’re with us every step of The Way.

    Last day in Pamplona

    April 28 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

What a great day it was! Had coffee and breakfast at Cafe Iruña - an old Hemingway haunt at Plaza del Castillo under blue sky and a warm sun with a local man playing an accordion from a park bench on the plaza. Then spent our ‘rest’ day doing a little laundry in the morning then walking 6 miles around Pamplona on avenues and narrow streets, a little shopping and a stop at the Farmicia for extra strength ibuprofen and sunscreen.
A really weird thing happened a little after noon. The power went out in the entirety of Spain and Portugal for about 4 hours. Trains stopped, people stuck in elevators, every traffic light in the entire country was out, cash registers non operational and on and on. Luckily, cell service had backup power so it worked. In all of it, folks still gathered at small sidewalk cafes to sip wine or have a beer and chat with their neighbors like they do every day. Just had to pay the old fashioned way - without a credit card. (exact change helped)
A finally, pasta dinner to load up on carbs for the miles ahead tomorrow.
    Life is good!

    Pamplona

    April 21 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    Hola Amigos.
As mentioned in my previous post, today is a rest day in Pamplona. It is only three days into the Camino, and many people just keep on going, but I find it a good spot to take stock and draw breath before going any further. Do I need anything that I’ve forgotten, what do I need to re-arrange in my bag, etc., etc.? In addition, Pamplona is a beautiful place to visit and I enjoy just walking around and looking at people and families going about their day.

I eased into the day and was pleasantly surprised by a really great breakfast bar in the hotel here – it’s the little things folks. After that, I took care of some laundry and visited the Pharmacy which was an interesting experience. When I reached the store the line was stretching out the front door and along the street. After standing in line for about 10 minutes, I discovered that you were supposed to get a ticket and go back in the line. After collecting my number I returned to the line about ten places behind where I had been. Fortunately, the girl at the register could speak a little English and so between her English and my miming skills I got what I was after.

Early afternoon, I went looking for my favourite stop, the Gaucho Bar. However, because of the public holiday it was very crowded inside and too smoky outside. Next door I found a larger and less crowded place and had a late lunch/early dinner. The G&T didn’t measure up to the Gaucho Bar but there’s another good version coming up in Estella in two days’ time – what did I say about the little things?

Tomorrow, I head for Puente la Reina and have to cross Alto del Perdon so I’m looking forward to seeing how I go. Rain is forecast but it will be good to be back in the country again and out among the fields. Already the farms are changing from horses, sheep and cattle on the first couple of days to a few wheat fields that I saw yesterday. I expect to see more crops growing from here on.

All the best, and thanks for following along.

    Buen Camino

    Akerreta to Pamplona

    April 20 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Hi Everyone, and welcome to day three as I go from Akerreta to Pamplona.

It’s not a long leg, which is a good thing because I’ve developed a doozy of a cold. No energy again, and after yesterday’s effort I’m a little disappointed. On the ascents I’m having to take it very slowly so as soon as I arrived in Pamplona, I hit the sack in an effort to get over this, whatever it is. It’s a rest day tomorrow so that should help. I don’t want to be a ‘bloke’ about this but it gives you a sense of the sorts of things you have to deal with.

But back to Akerreta. We had a great dinner last night with Karen from Adelaide, and Mary and Scott from Oregon. This morning we woke to a beautiful still, sunny day and we were away. As I followed the Arga river along, you could hear the birds from every direction. As the day wore on, the path started to become more urbanised as we followed alongside some major roads.

Just as I reached the outskirts of Pamplona, it started to lightly rain but I made it to my accomm without any difficulty. I got in around midday and I could see and hear various bands getting organised for the afternoon ahead. Crowds were spilling out from the tapas bars and it looked to be the start of a long afternoon and evening Easter celebrations.

As I mentioned, tomorrow is a rest day so I probably won’t post unless something interesting arises. In case any of you are wondering about the distance discrepancies between various sources, I’m using a map.app that gives me the exact distance I walk.

Click below for today’s Efren Gonzalez video. He walked from Larrasoaña which is between Zubiri and Akerreta.

    More of Pamplona

    April 17 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

Another day to chill and rest my foot, although we ended up walking almost 10 km.
Lots of tourists in town because of the long weekend.
We have a room facing one the busiest narrow streets and the noise coming from the bars stopped at 7:00 am this morning!!!
By 11:00 am. People were out again and drinking beer and wine while we were having our coffees!

We walked around this beautiful city surrounded by amazingly landscaped parks.

We’ll leave at 7 am tomorrow to return to our Camino.

    Larrasoana to Pamplona

    April 16 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

    Touring amid the Camino

We thought today was going to be an easy day, but we ended up walking 23 km.
We stopped at a medical center when arriving in Pamplona and the injury is not bad enough to send me home quite yet.
We checked in at the hotel, grab some lunch, took a bus to get some rain gear at a sports store, took a 3 hour walking tour of the city, and then went for some pinchos, beer, and sangria (following the doctor’s order… and Andy’s).
It is amazing how we all stay at different albergues, we all start at different times and yet, we get bumping into each other along the way. It is hard to explain but it keeps happening!!!!
We may lose contact with the known crowd though, since we have decided to stay one more night in Pamplona.

  • Day 6

    Arre to Pamplona

    April 15 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Nice short walk. Fitbit says 6.8 km, and 9000 steps. It was mostly through the suburbs of Pamplona I think would be accurate. Some of the best marked section I have seen so far. Big giant blue markings on the sidewalks with arrows.

Getting into downtown Pamplona where there’s a big wall with turrets on the corners for the archers I assume, it’s pretty impressive. And then you’re into the old town.

Nice manager at the Bearan bar and Rooms let me into my room several hours before check in. It’s overlooking a busy little narrow street. Pretty cool. Unfortunately, the downstairs bar is under construction so just rooms for now.

Camino Day 5-Zubiri to Pamplona (Part 1)

    April 9 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Today was the longest day so far! Another day filled with amazing history and beauty. The terrain was grueling at times with up to 20% grades to navigate up and down. The Camino has proven to be day after day of LEG/GLUTE workout day! I'm doing bicep curls and presses with my backpack at the end of each day to hopefully keep my arms as strong as my legs will soon be! 💪🏻🦵🏼Read more

Camino Day 5-Zubiri to Pamplona (part 2)

    April 9 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Part 1 & 2 because I walked a total of 17.25 miles today and took a LOT of photos! As with all the days before, the area is rich in historical buildings and bridges dating back to Roman times. The views were amazing. Pamplona was very crowded with hustle and bustle, which was a bit overwhelming. After checking into my room, I was simply too tired to go find a place to eat, so I walked one block to a grocery store... deciding that some meat, cheese, and fruit would be enough sustenance. I also stopped at the farmacia and got bath salts/ bubbles since my room had a huge tub in it. It was a perfect end to a physically demanding day. 💜Read more
